Hello friends, at last the final installment of our Asia trip. We are now in the South of France taking a well earned break!!! (I can feel your groans from here!). It was another early morning when we departed Quy Nohn for Hoi An and the bus trip was scenic but uneventful, or so we thought! We stopped for morning tea at the roadside (a “happy break”) and I started talking to a monk who was travelling on our bus. It turns out he lived in Perth for 8 years studying at the Marangaroo Buddhist temple (I didn’t know there was one there either). We had a chat about life, the universe and bits in between before reboarding the bus. We further chatted at lunch (yes this was a Vietnamese 4 hour bus ride) where he ... read more

We arrived in Ho Chi Minh City mid-afternoon and as soon as we got off the bus we were attacked by taxi drivers. We needed a ride to our hotel about 1.2km from the bus stop so asked how much. “Meter taxi” the driver advised us, so we thought, that should be okay. How wrong we were! The taxi ride was less than 2km using his “quick route” through the city traffic and reference to a map showed that he obviously had the “knowledge” to take us that little bit further than needed to hoick the fare up without it being too obvious. I only had US dollars, but he advised he would only take dong, so he kindly pulled up outside the bank for me to change money. Luckily I ran into the bank and ... read more

Thankfully our driver managed to miss everything that hurtled towards us on our journey from Ko Chang to Aranya Prathet, the Thai border town with Cambodia. We reached the border at lunchtime and were deposited at a restaurant. Our guidebook advises that there is a bit of a scam at this crossing where tourists are taken to a (cousin’s?) restaurant where visas are arranged. Yep, this happened to us and there really is no way around it unless you forego your onward bus. They sting you US$36 for the visa, whereas at the border it is US$20. It is annoying, but sometimes you just have to accept their “way”. Although we didn’t let them get away without a bit of an earbashing. At the border in Cambodia there is a money exchange offering 4000 Cambodian reils ... read more

Sunday is a good day to leave Perth, the streets are quiet as the locals generally stay home so as not to tire themselves for the coming working week. Our friends dropped us to the airport with plenty of time to spare and with a heavy heart we said our goodbyes. This flight was a new experience for us as I had managed to book our flights to London with frequent flyer points in business class. Walking to the front of the check-in queue set us up nicely for the service to follow. Check-in was efficient and friendly, although with an 8 week stop in Asia, the clerk was a little concerned that as the maximum visa period given on arrival in Thailand is 30 days and we had no evidence of leaving to go to ... read more

Hello folks and welcome back! We left Perth bright and early on Thursday morning, well I say bright and early, it was actually 7:00am, but the sun had been up since 4:30am thanks to those athletic types that want to exercise at some ungodly hour and who canned daylight savings. Heading through the suburbs of Perth we saw no one out and about (no exercisers, so who did vote against daylight savings then??) but met busy traffic on the Tonkin Highway. Our itinerary took us via the Brookton Highway to Hyden and the famous Wave Rock, which was surprisingly larger than I had anticipated. However I would not recommend it as a day trip. It is also very similar to rock formations adjacent to Ayers Rock (Uluru). Beyond Hyden the road is unmade and the Rav ... read more

Well hello everybody! We're back. Having got the laptop fixed and pulled fingers out of places they probably shouldn't have been in the first place, here is the latest blog. We will have to play catch up over the next few months and load our adventures after Columbia (carrying on from where the lap top died). But I am sure you are probabaly more interested in what we are doing now and may choose to peruse our earlier adventures as they get posted. Having said goodbye to the family we hit the road at 8am on Monday morning. It was raining and it rained all the way to Dover, in fact it didn’t stop raining until we reached France. But then it is to be expected that in England rain will prevail and we just ... read more

Hello folks Well the sad news is that my laptop caught a virus and is now dead. I am hoping that treatment in the States will get me my baby back! Since our last blog, we have left Colombia via Miami to reach Mexico. Lots of ruins, sun and adventures which will be posted once I can retrive them from the laptop. As this will reach you on Monday, I thought I would let you know we are staying on the beach at Tulum, on the Caribbean coast. It's hot and the water is warm and I can hear you cursing!... read more

Hello folks, we are in Mexico now, chilling out before venturing into the Yucatan and more temples! Its Thursday night here so hopefully you will get this on Friday. Apologies to those of you readng this on Monday morning. Leanny’s cold had cleared up enough for us to have a look around some of the local attractions to Santa Marta. Our first trip was a short bus ride to the fishing village of Taganga, about 5km north of Santa Marta. Whilst a laid back little place, it's pretty gringo and the beach was full of crap (rubbish, not sewerage). It is predominantly used as a place to catch boats out to other local beaches, which we did. Playa Grande was the next beach to the north-east and was a short boat ride around the headland. The ... read more

Good morning blog readers! Yes I know it's Monday morning about 8:30 for you guys, but honestly we do forget what day it is and it is purely a coincidence that we post our blogs on Sunday, honest. Well, perhaps not this one!!! This blog takes us from Venezuela, which we didn't like, to Santa Marta and the Lost City in Colombia, which was excellent. Hope you enjoy the trip! As usual, immigration at airports takes quite some time and our bags had seen a few laps of the conveyor by the time we arrived. We were soon approached by “changey money” vendors, which is not surprising and is unfortunately a must in Venezuela. Johnny became an immediate “friend” (or so he thought) and led us through the airport to the tourist information booth where a ... read more

Hello again. I trust you have all had time to read our last blog where we were just about to get on a bus in Puno. We had seats 1 and 2 at the front of the bus and above the driver, with the large windshield protecting us from oncoming bugs and wind. It was somewhat reminiscent of going to the cinema! The bus went via Juliaca, a town much larger than Puno. Our seats gave us a great view of Peruvian life and we were amused to see the bicycle rickshaws carrying people with large tyres. We were more surprised when we saw these bicycle rickshaws carrying corrugated iron sheets, a 3 seater settee and even one with a wardrobe, all with a passenger frantically holding on to their newly purchased goods. Somehow I don’t ... read more
