Local Colour & a Great History Quiet breathing all around me, faces concentrated and involved on a level I’ve never seen before, eyes on the verge tears signaled by strong and uncontrolled emotion at the historic sights held within the Saigon War Remnants Museum………. This was the sight of people all around me, and as I viewed the photos in the museum myself I couldn’t help but wonder if many others shared the same uneasy feeling from there stomachs up to their chests. The museum here in Saigon was very different than the northern Hanoi museum, and the pictures were extremely graphic. They depicted war crimes such as; Agent Orange chemical birth defects, horrific Napalm burns, and Children who would not get a chance to grow past puberty. The pictures also captured the results of ... read more

"Bike or Bust, 50 km of China beach" Hue to Danang Trainride, Hoi An and further South to Nha Trang I departed Hue at 9 am on the day train. It was an overcast day and a bit of rain filtered through the grey clouds. Unimpressed with the current weather situation, I buried my head in my book for the next hour. The weather, which had been overcast since I got to Vietnam, would remain the same until the train exited one of the many mountain tunnels on route to Hoi An. A few minutes after exiting another tunnel, I looked up from a dull section of my book with a pre-determined and pessimistic outlook at the landscapes before me. To my surprise however, the sun was out bullying around diminutive clouds and the train ... read more

Hue Vietnam Asia » Vietnam » Hue By HappyGoLucky April 11th 2007 Hue the imperial City Hue is located in what is considered central Vietnam. It city rests near the 17th parallel where a Tet overthrow was attempted by the Viet minh. As well as having much history in the Vietnam war, it also holds many imperial tombs of ancient emporers. I visted the Tu Duc tomb, Khai Dinh tomb, Thien Mu Pagoda, Old Ciditel, and the Tu Hieu pagoda. I basically spent the morning visiting Graveyards, but the detail in some of these tombs really was something to marvel over. My favorite was the Khai Dinh Tomb, which was built in the 1920s, and took a total of 10 years to construct. The detail in the 127 step st... read more

One day in Halong Bay not enough Asia » Vietnam » Ha Long Bay By HappyGoLucky April 9th 2007 Halong Bay One day in Halong Bay, Not too much to say about Halong Bay. I arrived here yesterday afternoon, got on a boat had lunch, climbed 200 stone stairs on a complete tourist trap through a lit up cave, did some pretty cool Kayaking around a beautiful area, had dinner, planned my short short trip through the rest of Vietnam while watching some English football through bad reception, went to bed, got up and hiked to a viewpoint, and had a swim. Have a look at the pics, it was actually a pretty nice spot, and the view was incredible. I am back In Hanoi right now, having some dinner an... read more

Hanoi Canada’s landmass is nearly 3 times that of Vietnam’s, however Vietnam has almost 3 times the population of Canada. I am currently in Hanoi, which is the capital of the single party (socialist) communist Vietnam and has carried a great history for 100s of years. I arrived here early this morning at 4 am and sat outside a guesthouse waiting to be let in by a prior telephone booking. After realizing no one was going to let me in, I wondered down a block to find an internet café and sat on the computer doing a blog for Sapa while waiting for everything to open. The majority of the population here seems to be in their late twenties, and in central Hanoi there is very decent backpackers accommodation. I checked into a hotel, had ... read more

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM!!!! After a short flight, I arrived in Hanoi and realized I was a definite minority in such a large city. Despite my travels throughout the rest of Southeast Asia, this was the first time I’ve experienced a great language barrier. I filed through customs around 7 pm and my plan was to make my way to train station. After closing on a price with a cab driver in Vietnam Dong, I was off in the nations capital and I found the traffic really overwhelming. Picture if you can a four-lane highway packed with noisy scooters swarming angrily in and out cars, trucks, and Tuk-Tuks. Now add a symphony of grade three instruments or vehicle horns all performing different songs in a small room, and a cloud of un-breathable carbon monoxide, and you’ve ... read more

C’est Incroyable. Je vais prend une autre baguette si vous plait Once again I find myself in a small passenger van wide-awake and contemplating what it would be like to drive on a normal less windy road, what a great “AAA” Alberta beef T-bone steak tastes like with potatoes, why I still might be able to out might my older brother even as a weary traveler on a diet of rice and curries and in a weight class around 180 lbs, why they call a Grapefruit a grapefruit and not something more fitting, and just how and why in the world Laos has so much French influence in their culture? Laos, a former French colony due to an intervention in Vietnam over religious beliefs 150 years ago, became an independent nation in 1952. It remains ... read more

LAOS VANG VIENG Well I guess plans can definitely be altered. A few days before heading out of Bangkok Thailand, We met up with a few German friends Ingrid and Golo, with whom we had previously traveled with in parts of Indonesia. After a few reuniting beer towers, some catch up stories, and a few bad German jokes (exhale Rabbit, coming soon to Canada), They informed us of their traveling plans into Laos, Vietnam and then Cambodia. So the next morning we grabbed a tuk-tuk, which is basically a twelve-person Thai passenger bus in denial of its four-person scooter powered capacity body, And were driven all over the city to everywhere except our target destination which was the Vietnam Embassy. In Bangkok, there is a scam plagued towards tourists involving a Tuk-Tuk; a sly and ... read more

Patong Bay & Ko Phi Phi The last 10 days have just flown by. As I near the end of my trip my time over here in Southeast Asia seems to just disappear. The journey out of the Gulf of Thailand heading southeast to the peninsula of Phuket was quite a long one. It began with a night boat ride aboard an old passenger ferry that departed Ko Tao at 9pm and arrived on the mainland the next morning at 6 am. The extensive boat ride was followed by a long layover and a very unpleasant 6 hour bus ride in mid day heat to get to Phuket. Phuket, is one of the largest tourist destinations In Thailand. It plays host to Backpackers, Business travelers and families who come to Phuket in search of sunshine ... read more

Koh Tao, Thailand is another small island just north of Koh Samui and Koh Phangan, the roads here are undeveloped which leaves transportation throughtout the island to 4x4 toyota trucks, and Dirt bikes. We stayed in two different locatations here on the island Ao Leuk bay and Tenota bay both of which had their on uniqueness. Our time here was spent 4x4 ing around, and snorkeling the island's perimeter. Infront of our beach bungalows in Tenota bay was a sweet rock about 25 feet high which made for a good jump and swim. Take Care Corey. ... read more
