San Carlos de Bariloche to Esquel

I start with an apology for the delay since my last post. The reason for those who don39t know will be revealed in the next few posts but as I have been encouraged to continue with my blog up until the fateful day I shall.San Carlos de Bariloche was not in fact closed at all. Come the late afternoon when I decided to go for a walk it was open for business. Being a Sunday this was perhaps unu

Saturday 17 MarchOnly five of us had arrived last night and we walked into Osorno and had the world39s best ever steak It was about 2 inches thick perfectly cooked and absolutely delicious One couple John Theresa had arrived the day before and had spent the day riding up to the local volcano and highly recommended it.My room mate Peter had only been in the country 4 hours and hadn3

Linares Temuco and Osorno

Wednesday 14 March I left Linares about 10 am and headed off back down Ruta 5. Although the purpose of the trip was now to make ground and join the tour at Osorno I didn39t really want to spend all day on the motorway. I had a hotel booked and plenty of time.Originally I had thought of heading up into the hills from Linares to Termas de Quinamavida. A hot water spa mentioned in the guide book.

Valparaiso to Linares

Wednesday 14 MarchI had managed to book a hotel in Linares which seemed a reasonable enough distance to go but I had not really got a route in mind. As far as possible I wanted to stay off Ruta 5 and see some of Chile39s wine growing region.Although the sat nav had properly charged the battery tended only to last 4 hours so I was determined not to use unless I really had to. My map of the area

A day off in Valparaiso

Tuesday 13 MarchToday was going to be a nice easy day sight seeing. Breakfast was served between 9 and 11 am so there was absolutely no point getting up early but I did. I couldn39t help it. The bloody phone went off at 7.30 am. It was a blocked call. Usually that means it39s work. I had had a missed blocked call the day before but I figured if it was someone from work and they couldn39t

La Serena to Valparaiso

Monday 12 MarchAfter missing out on the observatory tour I decided I would get up early and ride up to the observatory before heading to Valparaiso. Thatat least would mean I could say I had actually seen a Chilean observatory. That plan fell by the way side too though. I woke early enough but it was another pea souper so I decided to write my blog until the fog had burnt off. I had about 500kms to

Copiapo to La Serena

After I had left Herb Ron I headed back into Copiapo to the main plaza Plaza Prat. I had decided I couldn39t be bothered to ride up the Rio Copiapo valley to see some grapes. I would rather look round the museum. I pulled up in the space reserved for motos that Herb I caught up with Ron earlier that morning. The museum was a short walk round the corner but it was closed. I wasn39t to

After my little adventure into the Atacama I gave myself a good talking to. I had originally planned to ride up to Antofagasta and from there onto San Pedro de Atacama. San Pedro de Atacame is the tourist place to visit so I had set my heart on getting there. Although a coastal town Antofagasta is the capital of Atacama and would make a good stop off on the way to San Pedro de Atacama. The problem

Friday 9 MarchI was a little apprenhensive about today as this would be my first ride out into the desert alone. It was what I had come for and I had picked what I thought was a safe route that took me high up into the mountains up to the Argentine border. I was apprensive because of the distance and I had discovered in the few days I had been o n the F800GS it had no where near the range of my R1

When I told my family friends and loved ones I was going to keep a blog I hadn39y realised how much of an obligation it is. So I apologise if you are sat at home worrying why you39ve not heard from me. I hope you don39t fear the worst. It is just I have been too tired at the end of the day to write. So in future panic not I am OK just tired lazy or drunk or a combination of all three I

I have finally found somewhere that has the internetThe trip over was a nightmare. I have forgotten how boring and tiring flying was. The taxi collected me at 9.30 am on Monday 5 March and the trip to London City Airport was not the easiest. The cirle line to monument and the DLR to the airport. In theory easy but with all my luggage and no escalators it was a nightmare. The flight was due to leav

The plane tickets and the bike are booked and there are 50 days to go. The plan so far as it goes is to fly over to Santiago to pick up the bike a lovely BMW F800GS and explore a bit of the Central Valley Norte Chico and Norte Grande. With any luck I will see a bit of Chile39s famous wine growing region visit one of the famous observatories hopefully at night explore a bit of the Ataca
