This past week was a good one for the most part! I’m happy to say that I’m more or less back to normal as far as my health is concerned- I can finally eat normal food again and it’s great! On Friday a small group of us decided to leave for the night and head up to a pueblo called Mucuchies. It’s a decent sized pueblo and actually quite touristy. Actually, this is the same pueblo that we went to before we got in the jeeps to head to Las Aguas Termales (hot water springs). Anyway- we decided to get away for a night because the hour and a half bus ride cost 9 BsF (about a dollar) each way- we figured we could afford it. Oh, and a BsF is a Bolivar Fuerte- the currency ... read more

Los Nevados: The highest pueblito in Merida State This past weekend (Saturday and Sunday) a small group of us went up to Los Nevados which is the highest pueblito in the state of Merida (Merida is a city as well as a state here in Venezuela). I woke up at 5:30 am took a shower, got ready and left in a taxi to pick up Sara and Michelle. From there we went to the Plaza de las heroinas and waited for the rest of the group. There were seven of us in total. We all met at the plaza went to a panaderia to grab some breakfast, I had a palmera and OMG was it good. It is the Venezuelan version of a dutch letter, it's amazing. In order to get to Los Nevados it's necessary ... read more

Hey all! Today's blog is about adjusting to Venezuela. So far almost everyone has gotten sick, whether it be a parasite, bacteria or general homesickness. Before last night I had only belonged to the homesickness group but now I'm also physically sick. I'm not sure what I have, I will find out later today. It's been a pretty awful couple of days- I haven't been able to eat or sleep. Basically all I want to eat are Cocosettes (wafer cookies) and ice cream sandwiches. Those are the only things I can keep down. The being sick thing is horrible but I have to admit because everyone else is in the same boat it's a bit better. I'm somewhat proud that I can now contribute to the list that we have posted, it's called "Cual Tienes?" which ... read more

Hello and Welcome to my blog! I've decided that writing emails every week was a lame way of communicating, so here we are. The cool thing about a blog is that not only can you read what I've been up to but I can upload pictures here too. I'm going to start with a quick description of where I am and what I'm doing for those of you who didn't get my emails before. I'm currently studying at VENUSA- it's an institute located in Merida, Venezuela. Merida is a city in the Andes Mountains. I literally wake up every morning to the beauty that is the Andes Mountains- I'm so lucky. It's such a beautiful place. The first week I was here we went to the Paramo. This is a special place in Merida because an ... read more
