GOODBYE ASIA Asia
Contemplating leaving Asia has been quite daunting at times as we have been travelling here for so long and feel comfortable with the customs and way of life (and the cost). It has been a fantastic experience and we have both learnt so much along the way. We thought it would be good to do a breakdown of our findings and achievements. So here goes..... 9 COUNTRIES IN 114 DAYS INDIA, NEPAL, HONG KONG, CHINA, VIETNAM, CAMBODIA, THAILAND, MALAYSIA AND SINGAPORE. 36 HOTELS, 36 DIFFERENT BEDS! 21 BUSES, 18 TAXI'S, 13 TRAINS, 12 PLANES AND 5 BOATS - THATS WITHOUT SIGHTSEEING. We had an early start from KL for our flight to Singapore. The LCCT airport is quite far out of the city and very expensive to get to and from without using the local buses. Our flight out was 10am but it did mean we had to get the 6.30am bus from Puduraya bus station. Having the additional money in our budget to make these extra flights has been great but we really hadnt taken into account how difficult it can be travelling from the airports. Like Hong Kong we have been to Singapore before 5 years ago although our standard [View Full Entry]

The flight arrived into KL on time and our connecting flight out to Phuket was also on time all went very smoothly. The flight into Phuket was great as it was mid afternoon and we passed over Phi Phi Don and Phi Phi Ley that we had visited last March. They looked beautiful from the air. The airport at Phuket is literally next to the sea and the landing was weird as you get very low to the shore, we could see all the jelly fish. We collected our luggage and set of to get a taxi, we had already pre-booked [View Full Entry]

To get to Kata beach we had to get the bus into Phuket town and then another bus from there to Kata. It wasn't a major issue and was a quarter of the price of the taxi's. The buses are pretty old but we have been on far smaller cramped public transport with our back packs. We had not booked any accommodation in kata and were just going to walk round until we found something. There are two beaches very close to each other here. You have Kata and Karon, we chose Kata because it was the smaller of the two. [View Full Entry]

BLACKPOOL IN THAILAND Asia » Thailand » South-West Thailand » Phuket
We got to Patong after the lengthy bus journeys mid afternoon, again we had to find ourselves some accommodation. Fortunately two English girls had suggested a place they had stayed so we set out to look for that. It was very hot and walking with the backpacks is not the most comfortable when you hot and sweaty!!! Patong is a vast town with masses of bars and restaurants it is famous for it's go go bars and sex industry. After our initiation in Kata it didn't seem that over crowded so we set off to find a hotel. The one the [View Full Entry]

We arrived into KL airport and took the bus into the town. As we were flying with Air Asia we were sent into the budget airline airport which is quite a way out of the city. We took the airport bus into the city which terminated at Puduraya bus station our booked accommodation was next to this bus station so we planned to walk from there. The drive was smooth and interesting especially as it was getting dark our first view of the Petronas twin towers was fantastic they were very well lit and dominated the city skyline. We were dropped [View Full Entry]

PEACEFUL PANGKOR Asia » Malaysia » Perak » Pulau Pangkor
To get to Pangkor island we needed to get a bus from Puduraya station to a place called Lumut on the west coast mainland. From here we had to get a boat. Tim had checked with the buses and we set off at 9aam on a very comfortable air conditioned coach. We had one stop along the way for only a few minutes and sure enough as we were told we arrived in four hours. It was a bit confusing as we were not sure at first if we were in the right place as the driver never said. Eventually we [View Full Entry]

WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor
We decided to visit Ta Prohm as our tuk tuk driver said it was the closest and of all of the others to see it was the best. So we set off again out of the main Angkor area and a little further north. When we got there the entrance was very small and we were immediately inundated with people selling various things. We opted for a couple of cans of coke and sat down just inside the entrance where it looked like the adult sellers at least were not allowed to go. This is something we have both noticed about [View Full Entry]

STUNNING ANGKOR WAT Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor
As we sat enjoying our water in the shade we were approached by some local children selling jewellery and hats etc.... They were very chatty and their english good. They sat there with us and asked where we were from after we told them amazingly they ran off a whole list of information on the UK. Our population, Londons population, the queen, the currency it was endless!!! We were quite impressed and said so. The smiled and then hit us with their punchline which was "we know all about your country - now you must buy from us" We declined and [View Full Entry]

AMAZING ANGKOR Asia » Cambodia » North » Angkor
We set off bright and early for the temples of Angkor. From our research we had chosen two 'must see' temples which were Angkor Wat and Angkor Thom. There are many other sites around the city but we had limited time. Our tuk tuk driver was a member of the family we were staying with at the Khmer Guesthouse and suggested that because Angkor Wat was normally very busy in a morning with large tour groups that we go to Angkor Thom first. Siem Reap is dominated by the Angkor temples particularly Angkor Wat. It is what everone goes there for [View Full Entry]
