I was quite excited about visiting the zoo, Tim refuses to go in the UK as I always suggest it on a bank holiday!!! Here we were Good Friday in Australia and we had no idea what to expect. The zoo was well signposted and we got there early about 8am. The leaflet we had said the zoo did not open until 9am so we were expecting a wait around. When we arrived we noticed that people were already entering so we went to get our tickets. On the way we were met by two girls dressed at easter bunnies handing [View Full Entry]

So we left Airlie bright and early back on the road hoping to find some sunshine along the way. At this rate we were going to find ourselves in Sydney far ealier than planned!!!!! We just kept driving with an idea in mind that if time would get us there we would stop at a place called 1770 (famed after Cooks landings) as it was another good place for the reef trips out to the Lady Musgrave Island. we travelled through Rockhampton and stopped at the tourist information centre to find out about campsites in 1770. The guy there was quite [View Full Entry]

The drive to Townville was a long one taking us through some beautiful scenery. We shared the driving and hit Townsville mid afternoon. We were getting pretty desperate for internet at this point and finding it was proving very difficult we hoped that a larger town would have a cafe. We drove right through but could not see one. Townsville itself is quite big and looked pretty exclusive in places. It was too big for what we like so even though the sun was shining we decided to head further south and find a quieter spot. After another hour or so [View Full Entry]

As I had managed to have a bit of a practice around the campsite the night before I drove the next day. I was a little nervous to start with as I have not driven anything so big or old before!!!! It was really easy though and we set off back on the Bruce Highway. We had seen that there were some waterfalls along our planned route so decided to stop off and take a look. They were a little way off the highway but we figured they would be worthwhile as the area had had so much rain in the [View Full Entry]

We arrived into Cairns to unbelievable heavy rain. We had called our hostel we were booked into that nnight and they came and picked us up for free which was great. We only had one night in the hostel before we picked up our campervan the following day. The hostel was really nice it was recommended by Andy and Amber, called Dreamtime and was very clean and tidy. It was nice to have a big comfy bed after a few nights in the bush!!! We took a walk into cairns city as the rain had stopped, it was much smaller than [View Full Entry]

The swirling rock pool

After looking around for a while Beej pulled off the road and found a pretty decent open area that had been used as a camp some time back. It was pretty flat if a little rocky, on one side the landscape had a few larger hill formations which for the area were quite unusual. As Beej had not camped here before it felt even more like an adventure. Straight away we all had tasks to do, Beej never told you what was needed he just expected you to know. He also never forced people to get involved so there were just [View Full Entry]

Sunrise over the canyon
Amazing views
View from the walk

Breakfast was a dark affair to start with as we arrived very early for the sunrise. After tucking into weetabix and an excellent cup of coffee the washing up had just begun as the sun started to rise. I watched the first part whilst drying plates and then having done our bit of the tidying we sat for a while just watching and waiting. It happens so gradually that before you actually know it is daylight. It is true that the rock changes colour through the sunrise and it was so peaceful as no other tours come for the sunrise. There [View Full Entry]

What a way to start the day!!!!
Just finished the washing up
Our first view of the Olgas

Getting up at 5am is not the best when our room was next to the bar and it was very loud until quite late. Dragging our sorry backsides up we headed off for our free breakfast in the hostel. The kitchen was very busy as there were alot of people disembarking on tours that morning. There was one toaster with only two slots working and 3 mugs which were taken so it was not really the best start to the day. Still once we had woken up we were both quite excited about heading off to Uluru. I have always wanted [View Full Entry]

Table mountain
The never changing view of the outback
Wonderful Uluru

We left Melbourne behind for the small and quiet town of Alice Springs in the Northern Territory. We had booked a 3 day trip into the outback including seeing Uluru (Ayers rock), Kata Tjuta (The olgas) and Kings Canyon. The flight into Alice Springs was amazing even though you know that the area is literally baron when you see the landscape from the air it is quite unbelievable just how flat, dry and sparse of greenery it actually is. Alice Springs airport is small and quaint I dont think we have been to a quiter airport before as they only have [View Full Entry]

Alice Springs main street

We were both like a pair of kids waiting in the airport for our flight to Melbourne, Oz. It was 6 hours travelling departing at 8pm but there was a time difference too which meant we were going to be pretty tired when we got there. The flight took off on time and try as we might we did not get any sleep!! We landed in Oz at approx 7am in the morning quite tired as we had not slept all night and not feeling anywhere near our best. We headed off to get the bus into the city as we [View Full Entry]
