So we landed in Brisbane on time and we had 90 minutes to catch our connecting flight to Melbourne, as this wasn’t Schiphol airport we assumed we were ok for time. As this was our first entry into Australia we had to claim our baggage, clear quarantine and customs, catch a bus to the domestic terminal and check in before we could be on our merry way to Melbourne. The customs weren’t concerned with the copious amount of spirits we had bagged in Singapore, oh no they wanted to inspect the tent because we had used it in Malaysia once and it may have a money spider in there. The cheek.......the country with the most deadly animals in the world is paranoid about stuff coming in!! So out came the tent and off went the plane. ... read more

This is another long one; you might even want to grab some food for the read! We got the bus down to Butterworth on the west coast of Malaysia, where we could get a ferry across to Penang to meet my friends Uncle. He had just been given the following description; “look out for a couple of backpackers, the girl with a bright purple vest on saying ‘I love Cambodia’”. We eventually found each other and we were on our way with Uncle Raj! We were now in Georgetown, an old English colonial place of some significance. It was part of the Straights Settlements if that means anything to any of you. Uncle Raj kindly booked us into a hotel right in the heart of Little India and told us that he would be taking us ... read more

You will definitely need a brew for this one and maybe a bite to eat.....it’s the biggest blog yet! There is nothing quite like the feeling you get when you arrive in a deserted city late at night, restless from the bus ride, you then have to find somewhere to stay....it’s a city, how hard can it be? Well, first you need to establish where you are on the tiny map in our BIBLE (Lonely Planet; South East Asia on a shoestring) when all the streets have numbers assigned instead of names. Odd numbers go north to south, even number go east to west. This seems easy enough until you realise that half the streets listed in the map are missing and some other random number, totally out of sequence is in its place (if you ... read more

Getting off the bus early that morning we headed to the accommodation recommended by Deon, to our relief there was not a cloud in the sky and it was already getting hot by the time we had breakfast. Not a flood in sight. Nha Trang was used by the Yanks in the war for R&R (rest & recuperation) as it's supposed to be the best stretch of beach in the country. We decided to give it a try after breakfast and both of us ended up with sunburn, maybe our enthusiasm got the better of us after all that rain up north. That night we went to a BBQ restaurant where they give you a mini BBQ grill on the table. This was a proper treat, a day off from the banana diet, and we were ... read more

Confident that we would not be sleeping in a real bed for two days we decided on some luxury for the second leg of the journey from Hanoi to Hue. We booked a train that consisted of a soft bed sleeper train with 4 births per room as opposed to the 6 birth hard sleeper we previously had. We arrived back in Hanoi after our first leg at 05:00 on a sleeper bus from Sapa, we headed straight for the Hanoi Backpackers Hostel (where we had booked the Jolly Roger Boat Trip from). Playing it cool we took advantage of their generosity, helping ourselves to some free breakfast, tea (trying to convince everyone we were residents) and stashed our bags then off we went into Hanoi to see some sights! Our train wasn’t until 7pm that ... read more

We boarded the Sleeper train to Sapa from Hanoi at 22:00 on the night of the 27th of October. The tickets were in short supply so we ended up in the ‘hard bunks’ both of us on the third tier (of three beds), 8ft high, 24” headroom and little black hairs all over the white(ish) sheets; these WERE NOT from an animal!! Still at least we would not be sweltering as the air con was ducted from the roof and it got very, very cold. Arriving in Sapa on the Chinese boarder 1500 meters above sea level was like being in any European ski village, rows of terraced wooden shops flanking the main street with thick moist fog obscuring the view to the distance. The only thing out of place was the hoards of brightly dressed ... read more

As I write this blog we’re in Hue, 1/3 of the way down the East coast of Vietnam. It’s the 1st November and we’re waiting to check into a backpacker’s hostel. There was a Halloween party last night and it seems people are reluctant to get up and check out. It has been a fairly busy 10 days so here goes.......! The 50 minute flight from Laos to Hanoi was fairly painless on the evening of the 20th October, compared with the thought of a 24 hour bus ride over the mountains and a border crossing point that would make the North Pole look busy. ‘Apparently’ the bus drivers have a habit of refusing to cross the border unless you pay them a huge wad of cash, if they haven't robbed you first, then ‘apparently’ the ... read more

***TRY THE VIDEOS - CLICK ON THE 3 CLIPS ON THE RIGHT*** Well, I would suggest you make yourself a brew right now.........as this is the longest post yet! We booked on to the Gibbon Experience for the next morning; it’s a 2 day ,1 night jungle tour. The days are spent flying up and down zip lines through the jungle and then stay in a treehouse overnight 50 metres up in the canopy. The only problem was the initial trek up to the top of the valley which took 2 hours and was 100% steps that were cut into the jungle floor. The Zip lines were amazing some 800 meters long, linking one side of the valley to the other. The tree house, which was only accessible by a zip line, we had to ourselves ... read more

We headed north out of the Bangkok to meet Deon and Chris, narrowly escaping the floods. The rain was UN-believable and this was before our bus journey to Chiang Mai began. Stepping off a bus that was delayed due to the rain, into warm water over our ankles, we walked over the road for a taxi. It was like getting in to a shower with our clothes on (nothing like the ‘fine stuff’ we have in the UK!). The rain didn't stop for 8 hours of the 10 hour journey and was leaking into the 'VIP' bus at one point. The motorway was flooded half way, but we finally arrived safely to Daret Guesthouse in Chiang Mai at 08:00 the next day. The 4 of us booked on to a trek and downhill mountain biking day, ... read more

The final days in Bangkok were action packed, we eventually got in to the Royal Palace after some 'confusion'. We were approached by a Thai man early that day (whilst looking like tourists with the map open trying to find the Palace) who was very pleasent and spoke really good English, he asked us if we were going to the Palace. The man said he was a school teacher in Bangkok and that the palace was closed until 14:30 for prayers, so he decided to mark off on our map some of the other (tourist attractions) temples we could visit to pass on some time. He flagged down a Tuk Tuk and told us for 40Bhat (£0.80) the driver would take us around until 14:30, seen as thought we had nothing better to do we agreed.... ... read more
