The Maldives Trivanthinum Airport must have been built in the days of Biggles. We went to the airport by taxi, from Kovalum, and entered the Airport from it’s seafront entrance. The road into the airport enters the terminal area, and goes around the car park. As you face the Airport building, the architecture shows, with the wave shaped corrugated iron awning , and rust colouring, that this is a very old airport, and nothing has been done to maintain the exterior since it was built. After a security interrogation by the guard at the entrance door, we lined up in two queues to have our luggage scanned, and banded. Once through the banding, we lined up at a counter behind other people in the hope that it was the correct counter for our flight. I say ... read more

Kovalum As our time in India was coming to a close, we had to get close to our departure town of Trivanthinum, for the flight to the Maldives. I found out through some friends befor I left, that there was an area called Kovalum, just to the south of Trivanthinum that had some beautiful resorts on the beach front, at reasonable prices. We asked Eapon and Lizzy, and Eapon said that he had a friend who owned one of these resorts, and he would organise a nights accommodation for us. We drove from Thuravella, to Kovalum by taxi, a distance of 125 Km by Taxi at a cost of 2500 rupees which is about $A40.00 and takes at least three hours. The trip was another Indian experience, and by the time we arrived, I expect that ... read more

Backwater Tour Behind the towns in the south west of India, is a river, lake and canal system that they call the Kerala backwater. The Bakwater river and canal systems go for hundreds of kilometres, using both natural and man made canals. Some of these canals run high above the surrounding rice fields, and the swamps of Kerala. We were fortunate enough to go on a 4 hour cruise on a backwater houseboat. The houseboats range from 1 bedroom 30 feet models, up to the 100 feet 4 bedroom models. Like the narrow boats of England, these houseboats are available for charter. We had a 1 bedroom houseboat for 4 hours, and with a captain and cook, the cruise cost about $A150.00, which is very reasonable, as it includes a delicious lunch, and afternoon tea. The ... read more

The Wedding We were up early, again next morning, as the wedding was at 10:30AM, and Mum had to go to a beautician to have a wonderful Sari bought for her by Lizzy properly prepared, and have her hair done. For us blokes, this preparation is much easier, and preparation simpler. By 10AM, we had our car waiting, and we were transported around the corner to the church. Whilst alighting, there were cameras going off everywhere, and a movie camera following our entrance. The Church was a traditional Syrian seminary, and was well decorated. There were people everywhere, and we were ushered up to the front of the church, where our seats were taken. Right on time at 10:30, the wedding march played, and the Bridal party marched down the Isls, looking splendid. They got to ... read more

Changi Airport Wireless Internet. A note to those who would like to use the Free Wifi at Changi Airport Singapore. I found a brochure while I was waiting for the plane at the Changi Airport Budget Terminal. Changi Airport, at Singapore has four terminals. They are A, B, C, and the Budget terminal. Of course, I was at the budget terminal waiting for a flight with Tiger airlines, to Trivanthinum, in India. The terminal showed that you can have Free wifi at the terminal, and for those of us trying to get these blogs out while still travelling, that is a god send. There is a hitch though. You need to have an account for your mobile phone with Singtel to activate the wireless, Otherwise you need to get a brochure from the Changi Airport officers ... read more

India We landed at Trivanthinum Airport in the south of India at 11:15pm, and were met by a relative of the bridal party. Lizzy, the Brides Mother had organised for us to be met at Trivanthinum and driven by chartered Taxi to Thiruvella, about 125KM away. For the uninitiated, that would be a 1 ½ hour drive, but in India country, that drive becomes a 3 to 4 hour drive. We arrived in Thiruvella at 2:15AM, and woke the hotel receptionist guy up when we walked into the office. As it was a late night drive, we had done it in exceptional time. We couldn’t have done it much faster, as the wheels might have fallen off the car, due to the road conditions. In Australia, we can’t drive and talk on a mobile phone at ... read more

Singapore Zoo The Singapore Zoo complex is split into two sections. They are the Day Zoo, and the Night Safari. I recommend that you see them both, as they each have their own unique features. We went first from Singapore Harbour, in the late afternoon, to the Night Zoo. The Night Zoo opens around dusk, and runs until 11PM. Tickets can be purchased to include dinner as well, and if you combine it with a pass to the day zoo, you can get discounts. I recommend going to the night zoo on non holiday times, as we talked to someone who went there during the recent school holidays, and had to wait ages for the attractions. We went there at 6pm, and had minor waits. We saw a creatures of the night display, followed by a ... read more

Woke up pretty early, as the body is still used to being three hours behind, and had a look around the hotel for something to eat. We were staying at the Hotel Value Thompson, which is the newest Budget hotel in the Singapore district. The Rooms are quite small, and the Shower comes out of a rose mounted on the wall next to the toilet (tiny bathroom), but for what we paid, they are comfortable, clean, air conditioned, and have very good beds. What else could you ask for. ...... maybe breakfast! Dad wanted to have a look downtown, so we caught a bus from the hotel, down Orchard road. We hopped off in the middle section of orchard road, and after about five minutes of walking came across a sign that said food mall downstairs. ... read more

Melbourne to Singapore The flight from Melbourne to Singapore was fairly uneventful, as most long haul flights are. The plane Jetstar used is an Airbus A330-200 which was very similar to the plane that Air Asia used to fly to Kuala Lumpor last year. We were lucky enough to be at the back of the plane where the seats are two across. This meant that there was no one sandwiched between two others. It made for a more comfortable flight as we flew for just under 8 hours. Upon arriving in Singapore there was the next hurdle to overcome. How are three people with luggage to find a particular hotel in a town where there are hundreds of hotels, and how do we get there. I was told before arriving that the MRT transport system was ... read more
