Today I took an organized day tour to PingAn - in an area known as the Dragon's Backbone. It is an extremely hilly area - mountainous really - that is quite remote and where the rice fields are terraced into the side of the mountains. Extraordinary. The excursion was by van, with 6 paying clients and about an equal number of lcoals along for the ride:). It is a 3 hour trip one way, and about half way there wwe stopped at the side of the road so that the locals could have a feed of noodles from a stree tvendor - have I mentioned the chinese and their relationship with food? ALWAYS eating. Eventually made it there and what a day. I had researched this place on line and seen photos, but really - this ... read more

Sally and I had such a good time yesterday I hired her again for today. I could probably have managed my route over the next few days, but it is nice to have someone along who knows all the little nooks and crannies, and the language. Plus I know she could use the fee. After our 8 hour bike ride yesterday, today was much easier. We took local buses to visit some local towns. Baisha is a little north of here and it was market day there. And I mean market day. IT takes place every 3 days and you can get absolutely anything your heart desires, from live birds to dead ones, from underwear to spices - you can even get your teeth cleaned at a stall right there! A little crazy. After that we ... read more

Asia » China » Guangxi » Yangshuo May 6th 2006

Today I hired a local guide, a university student named Sally, to accompany me on a bike tour of the countryside around Yangshuo. We had a blast - even included a short bamboo rafting excursion - and I am running out of adjectives to describe this place. I have taken over 100 photos in 24 hours and do not think I have captured what is really here. I will add some photos and video clips as soon as I possibly can so you can see what I am ranting about. But even though it rained and was sooooo humid and hot, the day was absolutely perfect. Sally took me to a local family run um......restaurant. For local food. Now when you order a chicken dish here it is not quite the same as at home. After ... read more

O-my-gawd-o-my-gawd-o-my-gawd! How many times can you say that in a row? I said it for one and a half hours straight in the taxi from the Guilin airport to Yangshuo. Seems the white line in the middle of the road here is for straddling so that you can line your car up right. A two lane road accomodates up to 4 vehicles across, plus bikes, motorized rickshaws and various water buffalo. No one signals or checks rear view mirrors - but then the fine drapery in the windows of the vehicle would prevent seeing much anyway:). Horns are for honking the second you see something anywhere in front of you up the road -just so they know that you are coming and have the right of way. If I could have moved, I would have taken ... read more

Asia » Japan » Tokyo May 2nd 2006

It is so hard to believe that my time in Japan is coming to an end. I am here in Tokyo and have been since late on Friday. I have used the time here to visit some areas I didn't get to last time, sleep in and do some housekeeping in prep for China (re-confirming my flights, my first China accommodation etc). It's been, of course, perfect - even considering the two pretty strong tremors felt yesterday and today:). Japan is an incredible place. Full of contrasts - it is totally unacceptable to cough in public, but it is ok to sit at a table in a restaurant and apply all of your makeup (including false eyelashes). Everyone has been unfailingly polite and kind, but you know it is a high pressure society where there is ... read more

Asia » Japan » Wakayama » Koyasan April 26th 2006

Well I made it to Koyasan - finally! I seemed to have missed hanging a left at Osaka and had to backtrack but it's all good. On the backtrack I met a young guy who had spent a year in NYC on his own because he wanted to improve his english. He found a place to live on the internet before he went (can you imagine???) - and HE thought I was brave for being in Japan on my own - sorry, I think he is the brave one for heading to NY with only an internet contact! We had a great chat and both agreed that Japan is much calmer and cleaner than North America - and that I am in for a bit of a shock in China:). The train ride to Koya from ... read more

Asia » Japan » Nara » Nara April 24th 2006

A gorgeous sunny and warm day - so a perfect day to head out on an excursion to Nara. We headed out on the train at 9 for the hour trip. Nara is not that far from Kyoto, and is a much smaller town. It is known for...wait for it...it's temple! Todaiji Temple is noteworthy though - it is HUGE! I took pictures but the scale doesn't come through until I got someone in one of the pictures. They say that this is the largest wooden structure standing, and I believe it. Again with the deer who look much too mangy and tired. Some nice streets to stroll and window shop. And home on the 4pm train. I am really struggling to beat this cold, but am on the back side of it now I think. ... read more

Asia » Japan » Kyoto » Kyoto April 23rd 2006

Well most folks who were in our group have headed back home now. I had left a gap in my travel plans to see what I felt like doing after the trip, and I am glad I did. I have come down with quite a cold and am quite content to stay here in Kyoto for 5 days before moving on. Gives me a chance to slow the pace a bit and rest up. My ryokan is very friendly and helpful. The room is a traditional room with futon and tatami mats, but is very very small and the ryokan has shared facilities (fine in a place this small). I have visited the Kiyumizudera Temple here in town and wandered the streets. The temple is quite nice since when you enter the grounds you feel like ... read more

Asia » Japan » Kyoto » Kyoto April 21st 2006

Waaaay too many pictures taken the past few days. Three castles and a trip to Inari to ramble around the sacred mountain there. Lucky enough to snag some standing room only tickets to see the Dance of the Cherry Blossoms performed by Maiko (geishas in training) and then spent the rest of an afternoon walking along the Philosophers Path with all its greenery. The last night of the tour we headed for drinks at the Westin and then off to dinner followed by karaoke. Now here in Japan, karaoke is done in private - as in, you rent a room to accomodate your crew by the hour. They charge per person but drinks are unlimited....and it seems the whole objective is to make goood use of that unlimited bit within your purchased time. Note to self: ... read more

Asia » Japan » Hyogo » Himeji April 19th 2006

A quick stop at Himeji for a few hours to visit the very beautiful castle there. And was surprised to find many many beautiful cherry blossoms as well. Took way too many pictures (again). A nice 'little' city of only 2 million people! The weather was wonderful and sunny (we were definitely due for this) making the day that much nicer. It is very hard to believe that this part of my journey is coming to a close so quickly. Hope to get some photos loaded up in the next few days - working from an internet cafe at the moment, and trying to find out what I can and cannot do here. After Himeji, it was off to Kyoto. On this, our last train ride, I cracked open a bottle of sake that I bought ... read more
