Inspiration - From: And That's All I Have To Say About That...
Marc, I'm an 18 year old who has just spent the last year as an exchange student in Finland. During my year I read your travelblog often. It was great to read about your adventures and the possibilities that are out there. It's always been my dream to backpack around the world when I'm older. I just wanted to let you know that it's people like you that inspire me and make me believe that someday I can live my dream. So, I guess I just wanted to say thanks for the inspiration.

Yo Mark, good to hear that u survived ur amazing trip. I am in Airlie beach (Australia) right now for another 7 weeks holiday trip. Sad thing is , the tour has began and i miss a buddy to watch it with. I had a great time with you in all those dodgy bars (especially the toliet parts in the spicy). Well i write you a longer message next time , because now the beach is calling me. Greetz Bram

Thanks for sharing - From: And That's All I Have To Say About That...
Marc, Thank you for the wonderful journey that you let all of us in on. Since I sit in a cubical all day, i tend to travel vicariously through stories like yours and others on this site and many others like it. I must say, your comments on 1st vs. 3rd world are wonderful and my family back in China still lives life as such with extremely strong family ties and work ethic. We can't fathom these ideals anymore due to the ever changing culture which is dominated by seclusion (texting, e-mail, etc). But what I was most fascinated with in regards to your story was how you stayed grounded to the idea of "experiencing" something wonderful and new. and that you are grateful for it. Thanks Marc. love it! - From: Gone Global - The Bests And The Mosts
LOVE IT, LOVE IT! Love the top / most lists. Love the packing list as well as what things didn't make it back. Love the accounting and the pie chart. For anyone who's backpacked on a budget, the memory of the nightly tally must be very familiar... I kept a little tiny lined notebook and wrote down every penny I spent when I backpacked around Europe after college. Thanks for the wrap-up. I'm now re-reading those entries of the best/most and enjoying them again...

Shocker - From: Dream Another Dream, This Dream Is Over
You were shocked? C'mon...it had been 11 months. Shocked would have been if I came back after 2 weeks. But yes, I'm back. And you mean to say you didn't keep up religiously with each entry? You have things to do other than read my stories? I'm hurt. Deeply. Maybe I'll just have to leave again...

Yea. Welcome back. - From: Dream Another Dream, This Dream Is Over
Marc, I am in Birmingham, AL. (nothing compared to your adventures of course) on Sat 3/15/08 marking time because all flights home were full, dang... I did not keep up with every one of your blogs because of being busy, but had time today and found the Kili ascent facinating, especially with your Dad. Way to go Dad!!! Hitting the next blog button, I was SHOCKED to see your heading home, but can understand. You will be back before you see this entry. Congrats. Few folks have seen what you've seen, did what you did. Including me. But I still feel a little kinship. Hope we cross paths again. Marty Plecki.

Well, I guess this means my vicarious adventure comes to an end as well. I've SO enjoyed the blogs of the last year. Good luck with the new adjustment! blown away... - From: "Do Not Spit In The Complex"
Marc....I can't tell you how blown away I have been when reading all of your entries about your trip. Truly amazing! Even though you feel at times that your thoughts are all over the place, know that I'm pretty sure they can be appreciated by more then just me. It gives me a more real feel as to what each place is like. I have a friend who spent a few months in India last summer. It has been interesting to me to read your comments from this blog and relate parts of them to the conversations I used to have with him while he was there. Thanks for sharing your thoughts and experiences with all of us. Reading your posts have reminded me of how much I desire to travel....so until that becomes a possibility, I appreciate being able to see parts of it through your pics and learn of the places through your words.

1 year ago today we arrived in India on the first day of our trip, so i enjoyed your blog more than usual. My mantra for india... " for any words you can think of to describe India, the opposite is always true". had a great time there and seems like you are too! Happy days!

It does indeed sell. - From: "Do Not Spit In The Complex"
I guess I wasn't completely clear about that one. But the only reason people go to Khajuraho is for these temple carvings...many of which are kamasutra...various explicit sexual positions. So...the 1000 year old bizarre sexual temple carvings sell Khajuraho to travelers.

"Sex sells??" - From: "Do Not Spit In The Complex"
Hey good stuff on your time in India. One of the pastors at Kensington (the 'mega church' I attend here in the Detroit area) has been to India several times and always shares how affected he is each time by the poverty, disorganization and general sensory overload. So what's with the 'sex sells' title on one of your blog sections? Did I miss something? Who was selling and who was buying??

You nut....I understand the convention for multiple post scripts. I'll try to better explain in the future when I choose to not conform. As for saving the trek until you could join me...I'll gladly come back to Nepal in the future with you to trek when we both can find a month off from work...there's a lotta trekking to be done. PS - Let's discuss your week. PS2 - I thought I made it clear that I don't actually want to be Canadian...it was just a drastic measure taken in the heat of an arguement with a thug. You and Canada will have to give up the dream of a Canadian Marc. Sorry.

The Real Canadian responds... - From: Around Annapurna - Part I : Militant Commie Rodents In The Mountains
In my book, you're an honorary Canadian. If you had moved to Toronto rather than me moving to Chicago, I think you would have fit right in! :) You know I'm a wimp so it wouldn't have been much different from those other Canadians. Of course, I probably wouldn't have hired a porter either, which I think put "cheap" right out the window for you! :) Either way, I'm honoured (you need to start learning to spell in Canadian as well) that you would adopt my home country to try and get out of a tight jam. Next time, you can take my expired passport. ;)

So, whenever you are ready to jump off a taller pole, think about us for a minute. Glad to see you are having a blast. Remember, Rosi and I travelled for 20 some years before the kid bug bit us. Travels - From: Vietnam Was Great...Until the Robbery
My husband and I continue to love reading about your travels, Marc, and marvel at your ability to do things on your own. I was on an organized tour of Vietnam, Cambodia and Bangkok this past Jan/Feb...weather was grand. I agree with you that there was something about Cambodia that caught my spirit. One of my traveling companions had her camera ripped off of her shoulder while walking at night in the streets of Saigon. You're not alone on that count. We're returning to AZ next month so we'll see your folks and catch up on more details of their travels and yours. I understand your exhaustion with travel...but I reach that wall in days...not months!!! Blessing to you. Patty Steinway

Glad you're safe-n-sound - From: Vietnam Was Great...Until the Robbery
Sorry to hear about the heist. I guess I'm actually surprised that's all you've lost so far - based on all the unfamiliar places you've been. At least they mugged you nicely :-) You could have been hit over the head with a baseball bat or something. As far as 'hitting the wall' goes, I wondered if all the constant traveling would get 'old' after a while. There's definitely something to be said for staying put once in a while. Have fun with Tim!

Thank you Marc for another wonderful blog. Your descriptions and explanations leave me wondering whether you have done my traveling for me or are encouraging me to do more. My visits to Thailand, Cambodia and Vietnam were all courtesy of USMC 37 years ago. Patty's on the other hand as you know were recently. Travel well and safely. G.H.

Thanks again for sharing, even if it's out-of-order. Thanks, too for the little explanation at the end. Pretty cool to get a glimpse of something outside the US, for those of us stuck inside. I'll have to remember your 'toilet/massage' story for the next time we're 'toiletting' together - that's hilarious! Almost sounds like one of those hidden camera t.v. shows.

awesome - From: Please Stand to Pay Your Respects to the King
My wife and I had an exchange student from Thailand stay with us for part of the 2000-01 school year, and she gave us this cool soap sculpture with the king's face in the middle. We've never used it, as it's really ornate and I would feel weird about using soap with a king on it. This trip is fascinating - hope you're enjoying it as much as I'm enjoying reading about it.

Good stuff, Marc. You're getting to be quite the knowledgeable tour guide! On a side note, have you gotten any feedback from your blog subscribers about difficulty printing out your entries? Maybe no one else does it, but me. The 'print version' button reorganizes the whole entry layout and when I click 'print preview' in my browser half of the pages are blank and most of the pictures aren't there (don't print out). Just curious if it's me or what.

Very tough stuff! - From: The Heart of an Immense Darkness
Marc - thanks (?) for sharing your experience in Cambodia. Hard stuff to read and difficult pictures to see, but I'm sure it was much worse first-hand. I think Marty summed it up pretty well - as hard as it is to believe, this kind of stuff has been going on continuously throughout the history of mankind and goes on today (Darfur, Islamic countries, etc). We're just so insulated from it all here in the U.S., so to see it (or the remains of it) for yourself is pretty stunning/shocking, I'm sure. Though difficult, your experience is invaluable and one that all of us could benefit by having ourselves.

Cambodia - From: The Heart of an Immense Darkness
Marc, The whole thing, Cambodia at that time, was a shame. The world knew it, but it was under reported, I don't know why. Maybe for the same reason the atrocities committed by the Islamic extremists are under reported, while the few mistakes we make are over reported. I don't think things are getting better. Too bad. The US tries to respond, but we have not found a good way to do so. Power hungry people will always be among us to make life hard, when it should be joyous. I really worry about the Islamic extremists. Bad times are coming if we are not successful in modifying, stopping, ??, this ideology. On a lighter note, if you go to India, you will find the same kind of traffic madness, so….enjoy. Marty.
