Labas, Kulbiai - From: Packaging, eco-footprints, and bookeeping
I hope all is well with you guys! Here's a couple of things I wanted to share. The celebrations at Jono and Judy's, and then Lino and Rima were too calm for my taste. I suspect that this had something to do with your family's absence. :) The concept of microcredit loans is intriguing to me. Reading this post reminded me of a book written by Muhammad Yunis. In his book, he describes the establishing and expanding a successful microcredit program in India. I remember being excited after reading this book, and immediately initiating discussions with friends. I would be curious to hear about your experience with the mircrofinance institutions. Thank you for these blog posts. You would might be surprised who reads the blog. Several of my peers have already discussed reading this site with me, and they are not relatives. You have immersed yourselves in a culture that is dramatically different from that of Riverside and Urbana and I enjoy hearing about your impressions and adventures. Iki pasimatimo, Nerijus

Bravo! - From: Orphanage
Ruta: My eyes are misty as I read your daily blog postings & think of the passion, courage & conviction that you & Tadas possess in taking on such an incredible year in the life of your family. The example you're setting for your children and for all of us, your family & friends, about putting your current life on hold and volunteering to help impoverished people in another country on another continent is tremendous. No one, and I mean NO ONE, can now say "Oh, I could never do that because I have ... (fill in the blank)" A career to advance? Kids in school? Young children who could never live in those circumstances? Teenagers who don't want to be pulled away from their friends? Expenses that have to be paid? Family I have to take care of? You have all of those and yet, you both made a personal choice for yourselves & your family to try to change the world one person (or family) at a time. That is truly an inspiring message to bear! And for our children to see your kids, whom they know & are the same age, writing about their daily life & how different it is from American life is just wonderful. So thank you for your inspiration and your selflessness. The Chunias family will be sending some supplies your way!

Exhaust lollipops - From: Lukas' Daily Life
Labas Lukai! I LOVED reading your incredibly descriptive and detailed entry. You write incredibly well, so well, that I could SWEAR I had a taste of diesel exhaust in my mouth! I bet it's unbelievable for you to think back to a regular old school day in Riverside and think about how different it is. It's so interesting to me how you described the soccer field conditions, and that soccer is soccer: you don't need a fancy field, perfect uniforms, and top-notch conditions to play and be good at the game. I hope all of you are having fun and learning some soccer-Amharic! :) Buckis tau! Vija

Hippos, Crocodiles, and Pelicans, OH MY!!! - From: Hippos, Crocodiles, Pelicans, and Sunsets
I'm so happy all of you were able to break out and explore what I think looks more like the "Africa" we all imagine instead of dusty, crowded cities. :) I couldn't help but thing about the Lake Como I went to in Italy 5 years ago--- it's quite different from the one you went to. While you saw hippos and crocodiles, I saw hotels and George Clooney! I guess the only thing they had in common was water and a beautiful sunset. hehe Vasara, was it scary seeing the crocodiles??? Even though I know hippos are the most dangerous animal, it's hard to be scared of something so fat, round, and clumsy-looking! :) Even though I wasn't there, I think I'm going to dream about Africa tonight. Thanks for writing all your amazing stories and posting pictures, I know it's a really long and tough process. MYLIU MYLIU MYLIU! Vija

Wish lists books: Children's librarian in Ethiopia - From: Wish Lists for Ethiopian Kids
Here's someone whose organization might help school libraries too? Just announced in Library Journal in Oct. 2008...Ethiopian librarian nominated as one of the Top 10 CNN Heroes for 2008. As someone rightly said: "Librarians, I'm sure will be voting". Ethiopian-born children's librarian Yohannes Gebregeorgis, with an MLS from the University of Texas at Austin and a stint at the San Francisco Public Library... , has gone home to establish children's libraries via the nonprofit Ethiopia Reads. He even wrote the first bilingual Amharic-English children's book, Silly Mammo.

Hiring a mini bus - From: Hoofing it
Just a tip - you can hire any one of the minbus drivers. They'll be grateful for the regular arrangement because it means they'll get regular money. Just ask the next minubus driver that takes you to work, and get their number, and let them know where to meet you. You might have to pay *slightly* more than for regular public transport but I'm only talking a difference of about $2 US (if that). Also, the arrangements aren't necessarily binding so you can cancel whenever and the driver will happily move on. Just remember to haggle (a lot!)

Ruta, it is .. hard to read about the conditions. I didn't image that they would be quite so bad. I think it's easy to romanticize Africa, you know? I was envisioning small light- filled grass hut with giraffes munching on the roof of palm fronds. :~) You are contantly in our prayers and thoughts. Thanks for the updates, we really look forward to them!
