Wow! Tanna, one of the most southerly islands in Vanuatu, is amazing - traditional custom villages, cults, volcanos and beautiful scenery. The highlight of the year so far is meeting the Chief of the Prince Philip Cult. Yup, that's right - followers of the man who's not renowned for his sensitivity and cross-cultutral understanding! We just turned up near the village and someone went to seek permission to enter his village. We were welcomed in and he told us how he's expecting Prince Phil to come and live with them and that Phil will look after them all and the people of Vanuatu - all of whom the Chief believes worship Phil, like he does. This is the land of live volcanoes, earthquakes, kava, the Prince Philip cult (yup, that's true), land diving, the little nambas and big nambas tribes, cannibalism. There's an amazing richness and diversity of history and culture. Only 200,000 people but Vanuatu has the most languages per head of any country in the world with Bislama being the pidgin English language most commonly used. And then on the other hand Port Vila could well be in Australia - there's a big expat community in Port Vila, lots of Australian tourists coming off the big cruise ships a few times a week, there's world class diving, there's a big supermarket in town where you can buy most Australian-imported necessities. Daily life is expensive here though, with most things at similar prices to the UK due to import tax. ... read more



Life in Paradise

Well, here are a few chosen pics to give you a snapshot (literally) of life here in Paradise where the water really is turqouise, the tuna is plentiful and it's always 32 degrees. The last three months have flown by and I only have a few weeks left in the Maldives. It's been fascinating and great to travel around the islands a fair amount to see different volunteers and meet their colleagues. I've had lots of time to do a lot of reading, snorkeling, diving and swimming and will hopefully spend some more time diving once I finish work. But the best thing is that the pace of life is sooooooo much slower and it's been great to change gear especially as the office closes around 3pm every day.
