Globetrotter 07

Welcome to my travel blog.
For 2007 my friend Rob and I have made the decision to take a break from working life to fulfill our desire to travel the globe. Our journey sees us depart the UK at the end of 2006 bound for Hong Kong. From there our itinerary will take us through Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, across to Tasmania and over to main land Auz. Next stop will be New Zealand then over to Fiji for some chill out time, before finally heading to America where we plan to land in sunny LA and road trip all the way across to New York.

From the trip I hope to take away many happy memories of the good times and also learn from the difficulties traveling the world can throw at you.
I will do my best to keep the blog updated for all as we go along. Happy Reading!

So after 8 months of travelling, to 8 different countries, moving around from one place to another, room to room, city to city, with one bag on my back, travelling has finally come to and end and I am returning home to the UK. People have asked me if it's gone by quickly, and I guess in a way it has, but when I look back certain countries seem a long time ago now. I have experienced so much this year, met many new friends, learnt about different countries, cultures, and places, and seen so many sights, all of which I hope to remember. Like any long trip away there's been some really awesome times, and I suppose inevitably there's been odd occasions where things have not been quite so good. Sitting at train platforms ... read more

So I guess if you were to count leaving the city for more than a two day period, and returning as separate visit, then you could say that I've now been to New York three times. Not a bad effort. Truth is I had little choice but to return as my flight home departs from here. I made my way back on a Saturday morning, for what would be my final 4th and final four hour bus journey. The bus was full, so it was the first time I didn't manage to get two seats to spread out on to myself. But I suppose 3 out of 4 isn't bad stats. I returned to the NYC Hostel as I knew from my emails that there were still a few people there from earlier in the ... read more

The trip to Boston was again roughly 4 hours, this time travelling North. We arrived at the Hostel just before 7pm. In the evening without really knowing our way round, we got a cab into the area of Beacon Hill. Here we had some food at a Thai restaurant. We were going to go out after, but once we had eaten we decided to leave it tomorrow when we knew the place a little better. Instead of getting a cab back we took the time to walk around the city a bit before going back to the Hostel. Next morning we went into the city centre and walked the Freedom Trail. This is roughly a two hour walk lined out with a constant red line along the pathways taking you past many of Bostons historical ... read more

The next morning after Rob had left, I packed up my stuff and rode the Subway down to Chinatown to catch the coach to Washington DC. Getting down there in the subway heat with my bag on my bag was hot work, but once on the air conditioned bus with a couple of seats space to myself I resumed normal operating temperature. The journey to Washington takes roughly 4 and a half hours. I had just managed to make the 11am bus, which in theory would get me in at 330pm. I think in the end I was off the bus by about 4. Here I was quite pleased to discover that I only had a short 5 minute walk to the Hostel I had booked, and with no subway needed. I checked into another ... read more

Our flight from San Diego was an over night one. Only about 6 hrs flying time, but as East Coast is three hours ahead, and also because we had change at Philadelphia (onto what is definitely the smallest commercial plane Ive ever been on), we didn't arrive in New York until gone 9 the next morning. Tired we found our hostel, which was located near central park. Here the crappy unfriendly staff took ages pissing about deciding whether our room was ready or not. After deciding that it wasn't we each shelled out 5 dollars for a locker to keep our stuff in for the mean time. Immediately after that they changed there minds, and said it was available!!! Oh but then it wasn't again, then finally after a bit of an argument it was. ... read more

The drive to San Diego was fairly uneventful I guess if you compared it to the previous San Fran - Vegas haul. It was a long way again, as everything in the US seems to be, but it was straight down I15, to the outskirts of LA and then down again to San Diego. We made good time getting to LA, then crawled along in traffic for an hour or so before arriving in Diego by late afternoon. We didn't have anywhere to stay. We had tried to book a couple of days prior, but with it being a Friday night everywhere on the net was booked up. At the end of the day if worst came to the worst, the car would have to double up as a bed for the night. When you ... read more

Vegas was cool, well no in fact to change that to Vegas was very hot, but a cool place to visit all the same. During the fours days we were there it rarely dropped below 100, even in the middle of the night. It's too hot to sit out in, you can maybe do int early in the morning for a bit but by about 11 o'clock, forget it. Therefore most of the time we were inside with the comfort of air conditioning. First night we had arrived late so we just stayed in the travel lodge, not the ideal choice, but by this time I was really tired and just wanted a place to sleep for the night. Refreshed the next morning we made our way down to the library (so far really living ... read more

To my astonishment we actually got up at the time we said we would, had retrieved the car and had left San Fran before 7am. A record time for us if ever there was one. After a couple of hours on the road, making good time we allowed ourselves the luxury of stopping off for some breakfast. That dealt with, we pressed on and made it for the entrance to Yosemite National Park by around midday. We paid the 20 dollars entry fee and entered. Here we stopped off at many fantastic points along the way taking photos but always keeping a watchful eye on the time. This was, if any, the day that we desperately needed more hours!! By 3ish we were nearing the East Side of Yosemite. Here we ate, before beginning the ... read more

Once we had dropped off our bags we all took the short walk down to Union Square which is fairly central in the city. It was Friday afternoon and the place was thriving. We looked round the shops and got back to the hostel for dinner around 7. That evening we met up with Matt and Dawn as they were also in the same hostel. We did already know this. They had flown up and it was their last night here, before flying to Salt Lake City in the morning. A sunny Saturday morning and the 4 of us went along with others from the hostel for a walking tour of San Fran. This took us through various streets, including the crooked road. Down to Fisherman Wharf, where we had lunch, up through China town ... read more

The next morning we hit the road by 9o'clock and we were out of LA passing the suburbs of Malibu by around 10ish. We aimed to reach San Fran by the next day, so although it would be a long drive, we had plenty of time to get there. We stopped for lunch at a supermarket, and ate in the car park. This was easy and meant we wouldn't lose too much road time. Besides it was the first time I had managed to find anything healthy to eat since being in this country. It's a real struggle sometimes. It's just burgers everywhere! The Pacific highway gets good about half way up to San Fran. During the afternoon we spent time stopping off at the many photo points to take photos obviously, and also take ... read more
