A Trip Around the World

"Once a journey is designed, equipped, and put in process, a new factor enters and takes over. A trip, a safari, an exploration, is an entity, different from all other journeys. It has a personality, temperament, individuality, uniqueness. A journey is a person in itself; no two are alike. And all plans, safeguards, policing, and coercion are fruitless. We find after years of struggle that we do not take a trip; a trip takes us. Tour masters, schedules, reservations, brass-bound and inevitable, dash themselves to wreckage on the personality of the trip. Only when this is recognized can the blown-in-the-glass bum relax and go along with it. Only then do the frustrations fall away. In this a journey is like marriage. The certain way to be wrong is to think you can control it. I feel better now, having said this, although only those who have experienced it will understand it."

- John Steinbeck, "Travels with Charley"

Our journey will take us through 20 countries on 6 continents over 9 months. We'll find ourselves twenty thousand feet above sea level to one hundred feet below. We'll get there by plane, train, boat, automobile, bicycle, elephant, raft, tuk tuk and foot. Thanks for joining us on our adventure...

SANTIAGO Perhaps the cleanest city we´ve been to in all of the Americas, Santiago is a beautiful and welcoming place! We stayed in the Boheme neighborhood called "Bella Vista" that was made up of hundreds of little bars, restaurants and clubs. The main street, Pio Nono was lined with outdoor cafes and locals dressed up to be seen! The live music here is diverse, ranging from rock to jazz. We ate some lovely meals comprised mostly of steak...surprised?! South America would be in a world of hurt if mad cow became a problem... Beyond the impressive restaurant scene, we toured downtown [View Full Entry]

RIO DE JANIERO CARNAVAL 2007!!! We arrived at a land of tanned, bared buttocks and sunshiny beaches specifically to celebrate Carnaval and get some relaxation! What a trip! Over the course of exactly one week in Brazil, we managed to go to the Sambodrome to watch the parade of floats and ornately decorated costumes, explore Copacabana and Ipanema beaches and local haunts, complete a city tour including Sugarloaf and Corcovado, and ended it all with a night at Maracana stadium to watch the Venezuelan soccer team get its butt kicked by Brazil. On top of that, we lounged around and played [View Full Entry]

Egypt

CAIRO As one might expect, like most tourists in Egypt we were thrilled to visit the pyramids! We began our trip with a couple of days in Cairo which were composed of day trips to Saqqara (the oldest of pyramids which they say served as the basis for all pyramid construction methods), Memphis and the Giza Plateau. No, Elvis never lived in Egypt....this place is much older. Amazing as they were, the number of tourists was overwhelming and there was always someone new at every doorway demanding a payment. We particularly enjoyed going to the extra exhibit that housed a solar [View Full Entry]

Tanzania

WELCOME to TANZANIA- a land teeming with wild animals and the sweetest fruit on the planet, traversed by curious, kind and expressive people, and rich in geographic diversity! On this leg of the trip, we experienced a lot. We began with a climb to the top of Mt. Kilmanjaro, followed by a safari through three of Tanzania´s amazing national parks, and rounded it all off with a couple days of lounging on the island of Zanzibar. Here´s how it all came to pass: Arusha & Mt Kilimanjaro We spent one night in Arusha to meet up with our two friends that [View Full Entry]

TURKIYYE! The bridge between the Eastern and Western worlds... We arranged to meet up with Scott´s Mom in Turkey (Istanbul, not Constantinople). She had been wanting to visit the area for some time now and it was great to have some family along for a portion of the trip. Being that our visit was in wintertime and exploring beaches was out of the question, we decided to limit our travels inland and to places of historical significance. What a history lesson we received! We began in Istanbul... ISTANBUL (Sultanhamet): Sultanhamet is the older part of Istanbul and is filled with interesting [View Full Entry]

"Vuelvo al Sur, como se vuelve siempre al amor, vuelvo a vos, con mi deseo, con mi temor. Llevo el Sur, como un destino del corazon..." -Lyrics from Estrella Morentes, famous singer from Granada, Spain GRANADA It is not just the Alhambra that makes this town so special. Maybe it's that we are here at Christmas time? Nope, that's not it alone, either. Granada is special because of its enchanting people, tapas bars in back alleyways, delicately-lit streets, pensiones tucked up in the hills, and its charming old way of doing everything, including the pottery. This was a perfect place to [View Full Entry]

Morocco

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Captain Renault: What in heaven's name brought you to Casablanca? Rick: My health. I came to Casablanca for the waters. Captain Renault: The waters? What waters? We're in the desert. Rick: I was misinformed. -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- (Memorable quote from Casablanca, the movie, 1942) Well, we wouldn´t necessarily come to Casablanca for the water, or our health, or the health of the water, but we absolutely found Morocco to have many romantic enclaves. Our first stop was perhaps the most intriguing and significant step back into time: Marrakech. Marrakech: Ever wondered where saffron came from, or what an antique Berber rug looks [View Full Entry]

Welcome to London in the wintertime!!! Our time in England was very limited. So much so that we only spent three days in the city of London. Despite this, we did our very best to cram in as much sightseeing as we possibly could! As you can imagine, London in December is a bit chilly and foggy. With that in mind, we boldly opted for an open top double decker bus tour. Not only was it the fastest way to get around to see the major sights, but it doubled as a great mode of transportation. St. Paul's Cathedral, The London [View Full Entry]

You really CAN do it all in New Zealand...ocean, mountains, rivers, farmland... In just two weeks, we covered a significant portion of the south island (save the southwest corner). We hiked, fished, ate and drank like kings and queens, climbed a glacier, kayaked in a national park & just plain enjoyed ourselves! And YES - the sights were just as glorious and astounding as depicted in the Lord of the Rings. Queenstown: What a picturesque and quaint city! Queenstown is situated on a lake under some rather large mountains and is a jumping off point for many outdoor activities in this [View Full Entry]
