So this blog took a while to get to you, hope it was worth the wait... After a 3 hour road trip from La Paz to Coroico on the "World's Most Dangerous Road" (which actually wasn't much scarier than lots of roads in the Andes of Peru and Bolivia), we found ourselves in a little town surrounded by cloud forests and farms. There were lots of hikes available in the surrounding areas, and we chose one that visited a few nearby waterfalls. Little did we know the purpose of our trip would be much more than getting to the falls. We started off by passing some coca plantations- which look a bit like coffee plantations, but smaller. These particular plants aren´t used to make anything illegal. In most any restaurant you go to in Bolivia ... read more

Hi Guys! Boy, I've gotten a bit behind on this travelblog thing. Forgot I even started this one months ago. We've been travelling like crazy and will be sure and update you on some of our adventures in the next week or 2. We've actally found ourselves going more and more north after going so far south, but that's another story... This blog is from around new years. We got a guitar and are having a wonderful time playing! What a great gift to have on the go. So here's some quick pics to show us enjoying our¨"Lil Paz" in the highest capital city in the world "La Paz". How amazing it was to stay in a place with so many people and so much energy- but with the name of "peace." ... read more

Lake Titicaca, where the world began according to legend, is in both Peru and Bolivia. It's the highest navigable lake in the world, and it also has people living on floating beds of reeds. How does this work? They are continually adding fresh reeds to the tops of the islands while the reeds underneath slowly break down. They're actually quite thick and I soon stopped wondering if I might fall through. So, why are they living out there? As the story goes they originally moved there to get away from the Incan Conquistadors, and I suppose found a nice nitch safely within the confounds of the lake. Stevie and I came from Cuzco (where we spent Christmas (sorry, no pics), travelling for 8 hours on a bus to Puno, a city by the lake. From there ... read more

A park by the sea!!! I said to Stevie- this is the one place in Peru I absolutely have visit. And both of us are glad we did. At the advice of our taxi driver (who was driving us in circles around town until we agreed) we decided to stay in the little town right by the Parque Nacional Paracas. He made an extra 10 soles getting us there (about 3$). It was a lovely little town, quiet, clean, right by the beach, and Stevie worked it so we got half price on our hotel room (which made the place even nicer). The next day we took a speed boat out with about 25 other people and a jolly bilingual guide to a series of islands. They were full of caves and crevices, and covered with ... read more

Unfortunately I was battling a bit of food poisoning during this part of the journey so all I have to show is a lovely picture of the mountain peaks from our hotel. The town of Huarez is located at about 10,000 feet and is about 8 hours north of Lima, not too far from the coast. The peaks of these mountains top 20,000 feet! Incredible!. There´s several hikes you can take up them- most involving ice picks and boots with spikes. I was happy to sip tea and gaze at them from below. ... read more

We made it to Peru! We´ve figured out by now that pretty much the only way to travel in Peru is at night. Any trip longer that 7 hours usually only goes at night. We made our way easily in the middle of the night through Ecuador to Peru. Spent a night here and there until we got to the central north area, a town called Chachapoya. We stayed in a hotel right on the main plaza- pretty much every main plaza in every town in called "Plaza del Armas." We planned a tour to the ruins of Quelap the next day. Our day began about 7 in the morning with a 3 hour ride in a taxi winding through the edge of mountains on a small dirt road. Mind you, in many spots the road ... read more

Back to computers, cars, and travel blogs. We´ve just finished a tremendous week of hard labor and good eatings. There were 4 of us travelling friends helping out three local people that run this farm way up in the mountains from town (4 wheel or two feet only to get there). Most of our week consisted of clearing a field to plant corn in, moving soil from one place to another, and digging holes and weeding around baby trees. In between digging, there was the constant reward of this incredible view of the town below and the surrounding mountains. I liked to imagine how the food we were helping to grow someday would go down there and they´d make a great almuerzo with it. We realized last Wednesday that the following day was Thanksgiving- how appropriate! ... read more

Just wanted to share with you the nice people I got to share my birthday with. George, our Spanish friend that works at the hostel, baked me a cake, we enjoyed pina colada´s, and somehow Stevie even found little candles of the numbers 2 and 7. I got a lovely hand made card and earrings from Stevie, I´m wearing them in the pictures. My new friend Ami, from Boston, also shared the day with us. I was a day of pampering for all- I had my first hair and facial treatment with lots of herbal smelly masks and such, Stevie got a foot massage, Ami got a back massage. Not sure if we´re ever going to leave...... read more

Stevie and I have discovered another jem, hidden between the mountains in the town of Vilcabamba. There´s an Incan woman overlooking the "Valley of Longevity," and they say bathing in the waterfalls here add a year to your life. Many people live past a 100 years. Researchers from the world over have come here to discover why. Mainly vegggie and pescatarians, they work hard, live in a very clean place, and drink excellent water from the mountains. We´ve found several opportunites to volunteer here and just finished our first week up in the mountain almost 10,000 feet up in the Podocarpus Nat´l Park. We rode horses with our supplies up, then walked down a week later, very down, so down I am still recovering 2 days later. My calves don´t want to work as they should ... read more

What an adventure it has been. Stevie and I have travelled from Quito, the capitol of Ecuador, out to the coast, and down into the southern highlands of Ecuador. After having my camera stolen the third day of our trip, we finally found a nice new one here in this lovely city, so the blog is back in action. How different Cuenca is from anywhere else we've been so far. Beautiful colonial architecture, we're talking wrought iron balconies, domed churches, colorful windows and houses, marble floors and columns just to get started. Every few blocks there was another lovely botanical park with statues and fountains. The people were some of the nicest we've met so far, eager to help us out with whatever we might need. And the food, oh the comida, you could get just ... read more
