So we chose the breeze of a 17 hour night bus to Santa Cruz rather than risk going to the Jungle with no way to Brazil and having to do 21 hours out of La Paz then 21 hours back! Although we hadn't intended to we have just spent 4 days and nights there as we kind of got stuck. Whoever writes the Lonely Planet has a vivid imagination because the daily 8am trains to the Brazilian border it speaks of are completely fictional! So we got some correct infor from the hostel and hiked to buy train tickets for Sunday [View Full Entry]

4x4 city!

We spent 9 days in Cuzco following the tough trek in Colca Canyon. It's really popular with backpackers for it's buzzing nightlife and Inka heritage. Everyone visits Cuzco before going to see Machu Picchu (the lost city of the Inkas) and we did the same, spent a few nights checking out the clubs then got a 2 day tour, then did the clubs again! The trip to Machu Picchu was one of the best parts of the trip so far. We were picked up at 8am last Monday morning and taken on an 8 hour bus up and down the Andes [View Full Entry]

Our rickety old train!

On our 3rd day in Arequipa we decided to book ourselves on a 3 day trek through the Colca Canyon, which is allegedly deeper than the Grand Canyon and is made up of volcanoes, mountains and hundreds of waterfalls! The bus came to pick us up at 4am and we arrived at Condor Cross four hours later where we saw teams of Condors gliding over the canyon looking for smaller weak animals. We stopped for lunch in the small village of Cabanaconde and split into our trekking groups, luckily for us we had a small group of 5. At this point [View Full Entry]

Our 4 nights in Lima were fun but we both feel that was plenty time to see what the place had to offer and were desperate to get away from the smog/cold weather/polluted beach! We did manage to sample the nightlife though as we hooked up with some American girls from our 2nd hostel in Barranco (fluent in Spanish). The attention we were getting from the locals was pretty intimidating just the two of us but with 5 girls together felt comfortable enough to drink pisco sours (grape liquor, lime and egg whites) and peruvian beer and even do a bit [View Full Entry]

Plaza De Armes Arequipa
Central Cathedral Arequipa

Finally arrived in Lima last night after a long but comfortable flight from heathrow. We were both quite anxious on arrival as it was quite a culture shock, the poverty is very evident. It was scary mary times for a minute when our taxi driver locked all his doors after he spotted some dodgy geezers on the street corner eyeballin the cab! We got to our hostel safe and sound though and got straight to the bar to settle in. We are happy with the accommodation, but moving on to beachy/bohemian district of Barranco tomoro. We had a great day in Mirraflores [View Full Entry]
