On the way to Nashville, I discovered a nearby bouldering spot. I only had a vague concept of what bouldering was, so I researched the subject. Basically, it is rock climbing on the small scale. Rope is generally not used, just a mattress to fall on, and instead of quickly scaling, the goal is to work out the most efficient way to scale. Boulderers refer to their courses as "puzzles". I was highly intrigued. The site gave a poor description of where the rocks were located, but the backroads were fun to drive on, and I was listening to some metal, getting pumped to try this new sport out. Finally, after driving up a dirt road past a bunch of farm land, into an abandoned logging area, I saw some big squarish stones, and pulled over. ... read more

Stop by the visitor center, grab a map, start planning the trip. Pick a vague route, it will probably change, subject to nature's whim or other hiker's endorsements. This looks like a good parking spot for the trail head. Pack up the duffel bag. Only necessities, don't make it too heavy. Plenty of food, all the emergency stuff. Sleeping bag for sure, tent...guess so. Bulky, but probably going to do a night away from the shelters. Mushrooms Demystified? Heavy, but have to hunt some shrooms. Alright, that feels fine. Find out for sure in a few hours. Map says this path will run into the trail, good place to start. Five minutes in, and already a river is in the way. There has to be a bridge near by, parallel the water and it will show ... read more

In Charleston, W expressed his distaste for the word "supernatural", suggesting its use frequently if not always correlated to something simply undiscovered or misunderstood. I've never been able to blindly accept things like mystical powers of the universe, psychic readings, spirituality, religion, or any explanations that require suspension of logic and rationality for something called "faith". Science is my belief system, and because of the recent advances in neuroscience, it is beginning to be able to explain things like shamanic trances and near death experiences. Not to say that science can disprove the existence of God by explaining visions of divinity as epileptic seizures. "If God wants to use that mechanism to transmit His revelation, so be it." (W. Grassie, http://www.metanexus.net/essay/neurosciences-religion-meditation-entheogens-mysticism) It is just a place to start th... read more

Get to South Beach around noon, and there are loud people stumbling, girls in bikinis, and about a third of the people are carrying a plastic cup with golden liquid. This looks like a recipe for a fantastic disaster. Check in at the Congress isn't until four, so park the car and check out the beach. Windy as all hell, and clouds are dark but scattered. No sun bathers, only a few swimmers. Look at that water though, clear and green. Gotta try it out. Warmer than the air, maybe I should just float for a few hours. Nah, gotta check out the area and do some planning. Cheap cafe, great reviews. Cute waitress. Braces, uh-oh. Stop flirting with me, there is no way you are 18. Clubs everywhere, but there has to be a dive ... read more

Wake up at the campground after sleeping in the car, white truck pulls up and dude starts shouting. Too early, what does he want. Ticket? Hanging on the mirror, plain sight, is this really necessary? Wrong campground, eh? Seemed like a good idea last night. This spot is for overflow only, noted good sir, carry on. I'm leaving soon anyway. Lay back on the seat, listen to the birds chatter. Five birds, same calls over and over. Does it have different meaning based on timing, or volume or something else my untrained ears are missing? Maybe they're just very adamant about the one thing they have to say. "Good food here. Good food here." Maybe "Ladies, check out my set up." Driving through Charleston, been in the car too long, need to stop and stretch the ... read more

Ate at a local seafood place, amazing cream of asparagus soup with crab chunks. Talked to the locals about what to do in the area, they recommended surfing. In March. I decided they may not be the ones to ask about such things. Drove down the outer banks, looking for a place to stop. Camp sites all suck and cost a lot. Islands are covered in sand from Irene still. Tractors everywhere to clear it out. Huge beach house mansions all empty. Slept on the fourth story deck of an ocean front beach house. Amazing sunrise. Discovered camera filters.... read more

Gas up before leaving Richmond. 10:17 pm, this is really it, no more safety net. Too tired to make a go of it tonight, crash at the next rest area and get going in the morning. Front seat can actually be cleared, score. Gotta love the Buicks bench seat. It's a little short, maybe kick the legs up on the window. What about belly. Hmm. TV is like a warm glass of milk. Start the new season of Underbelly. Second episode, sleep will come. Maybe write a bit. Nope, not feeling it. What about driving? That feels like the thing to do. Where to go, phone? Meet E out in Roanoke tomorrow then south to Florida, or...Virginia Beach. Sounded like he probably won't make it. Beach it is, four hours until sunrise. Can make it there ... read more

E+R came out to A+L's place to hang out for the night. R is an old friend that I haven't seen in a couple years, he is practically living off the grid near the VA/WV border, and has six cats in a small two bedroom house. With an awesome set of dreads substitute for wild frizzy hair, he makes a pretty decent cat person even at 23. We watched MMA fights on youtube and retold tales of our wild years together. E had recently completed a stint of life on the road and we waxed philosophically about civilized vs. off the grid living and such. We all traded knowledge and stories of life outside "the system", and shared fairly similar sentiments. Before they left we made plans to go hiking the next day at a spot ... read more

Spent some time with Ma in WV before the trip officially began. She had been taking care of Betsy for over a week, and they had a pretty solid routine worked out. Betsy was super spoiled with an entire room to run around in and explore, climbing on the bed or just straight up curtains, catching wild stink bugs despite our best efforts to stop her, and nestling in any number of towels or cloth scraps scattered about. Ma and S always have deer meat on hand that S periodically hunts down, and Ma cooked up some venison stroganoff that I couldn't get enough of, my body knew it was time to pack on some heft before living on truck stop sandwiches and whatever I can forage for or catch in the woods. We mostly just ... read more

W had work Saturday, but upon learning my plans to leave the east coast as a thing of the past, he quickly called it off as we needed a proper farewell. We had talked about checking out West Virginia's gambling scene in the past, and agreed that now was the time. After a bit of research, the horse tracks became our primary goal, a first for both of us. We took off Saturday morning. Along the way, we stopped at an old graveyard, something W has an affinity for apparantly. After walking around a bit, it looked as though most of the couple hundred stones belonged to a small handful of clans. Some of the stones, regardless of generation, had unkown or vague birth dates, while others went so far as to include the actual day ... read more
