This is a very hard blog to write. Firstly because I went to Iceland half a year ago and secondly because, as a country, it has some of the most intensely difficult place names to remember how to say let alone spell. Therefore, it shall be a summary rather than a detailed review! Nathan and I had wanted to go to Iceland for years but somehow Africa and Asia got in the way. It just seemed so random - so unique - so bizarre... A mere three hours away by plane would be a geological freak show protruding out of a split in the earth between the North American and European continents, isolated by thousands of miles of sea. Volcanic yet frozen, desolate yet rowdy, historic but new. We had to see it. Because of our ... read more

Las Vegas and the Grand Canyon Following a year of confusion, applications, getting away, coming back and generally not knowing what I was doing with my life, in May 2011 I was accepted on to a GTP course which meant 2011-12 would turn into one of the busiest and hardest working years of my life. Therefore, once I had been accepted I was able to begin to think of how I would use the last few months of relative freedom. I was lucky enough to be able to take my friend Colin up on the offer of going to Vegas and the Grand Canyon – something that Colin had never got round to doing during his many travels throughout his life. It was to be quite the adventure! We arrived in Vegas in sweltering heat. It ... read more

I couldn't risist another session of Alabama hospitality and Joey and I checked in with Brad for one night. Joey and Brad seemed to get on like a house on fire and we went to get 'Bama's finest ribs and then all trundled out to some Bars in Mobile's main street. The next day Joey and I returned to where it all began - New Orleans, and this time we had secured ourselves some floor space staying with Margaret and Jessie who we had met at India House two weeks earlier. They had found themselves a place to live and, in true New Orlean's style, it was a "shotgun house" where there are a series of rooms and no internal doors or coridoors! I've attached a video to show this but it's incredible how such a ... read more

Joey needed a decent shave so we checked into a Best Western late after a long day's driving broken up by a swim at a beauty spot with its own pontoon to mess about on. The next morning we met up with a couchsurfer called Elizabeth who showed us around town. Athens is an interesting place mostly populated by students and home of the national College football champions who play in a stadium that holds more people than the town itself! There is a pleasant feel to the place and I think we were there in exam time so it was relatively quiet but jogging seems to be the exercise of choice and we saw hundred of people running about taking each other on in a who-can-wear-the-shortest-shorts competition. But the people here weren't like the pretentious ... read more

A comedy of errors - our time in South Carolina only deserves to be blogged about for the comedic effect of our perpetual misfortune. The dream of Southern Belles in Columbia quickly faded when we began to realise vagabonds were certainly not deemed sexy and mysterious strangers, but rather filthy rogues not deserving of conversation. Indeed, unless you were a jock in full jock clothing or a frat-boy in a pink shirt, beige shorts/trousers and boating shoes you were an outcast in this dreary and pretentious grovel. At one stage I asked a girl outside a club why the queue was so long and whether it was worth it and she proceeded to mimic my accent in a condescending rather than the usual fascinated way before walking off, not answering my question. Joey struck up a ... read more

Nashville. The home of Country and Western! A place where every second door takes you into a world of crooning chiseled-jaws wearing flannels, cowboy hats, denim and boots! Also a place where I had been told a good time was to be had by all. Joey and I searched for it. We searched high and low, but after about the 15th bar proved to be as dull as the last we called it a night and headed back to the rather splendid hostel which had a piano and plenty of space to jam out - Joey on the banjo and me on the guitar or keys. Nashville day 2 followed a similar fashion and we cut our losses early on day 3 and headed into the hills of North Carolina It was a rather epic drive ... read more

I met Brad through Couchsurfing three years ago when he stayed with me at the beginning of his adventures through Europe. He told me on that trip that he was the only person he knew in Mobile, Alabama, who had been to Europe and one of the few who even held a passport! I took to his relaxed southern style as soon as I met him and we've stayed in touch since. When I told him I'd come stay in Mobile so he could return the hosting favour he was sceptical, and, in truth, he is the only Couchsurfer who I have hosted and ended up subsequently visiting, but there was something about his description of the city of Mobile that appealed to me. He linked me to this rather bizarre video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nda_OSWeyn8 and told me ... read more

Walking around East harlem at 4 in the morning on your own isn't the best idea but doing it with all your gear, backpack, passport, money, airline tickets etc is just plain silly. But there weren't many options as I had a flight from La Guardia Airport at 6am to New Orleans. Thankfully, I managed to flag a cab without incident and took a terrific Southwest Air flight via Chicago and a local bus to the "India House Hostel" where I was to spend the next three nights. Day 1 was spent exploring the City, soaking up the atmosphere and taking photographs. I walked up and down the famous (or infamous depending on how you look at it) Bourbon Street enough to realise that it wasn't a place I would be spending my evenings! When I ... read more

My blogs always start off with a flight… The last was a rather unusual affair in that I flew something rather special - a 22 hour business class flight to Sydney but the level of luxury of such a flight provides a perfect antithesis to the woeful inadequacy of the "service" provided by "Iceland Express" which I took to New York to start my USA road trip adventure. Ok, it was cheap. Super cheap when considering I booked my flight 2 weeks before departure. It was in the realms of half the price of any other options at just over £300 but as I first caught sight of the plane this price outlier was explained. From the windows of Gatwick I was able to see that the aircraft was not only dented and decrepit, but was ... read more

The award for the most delayed blog ever goes to......... Somehow within the midst of work, other trips and general busyness I never managed to finish this blog off, so here it is: So this winter I had the fantastic opportunity to complete something off my "things to do before I die" list when I accompanied my friend Colin on a trip to Australia to watch The Ashes. Unlike most of my trips, where flying has ranked slightly behind being kicked in the face and food poisoning in the list of unpleasant experiences, we had the luxury of taking business class for the 22 hour flight over to Sydney. This was my first experience of travelling this way and it was rather exciting! For once, arriving at the airport stupidly early was actually worthwhile as I ... read more
