Walked the streets of Munich today, though not in the footsteps of more infamous predecessors, seeing some of the sights. Including Marienplatz and the Neues Rathaus. Watched and listened to the glockenspiel play at11am. Wandered around Viktualienmarkt, full of fresh food stalls and a large maypole. Walked passed the Residenz, winter home of the kings of Bavaria. Then onto the famous Hofbrauhaus, and enjoyed the the atmosphere of song and beer drinking. Then hit the shops for some retail therapy along Kaufingerstrasser and Karlsplatz, before heading back to our hotel - the Tivoli, near the Hauptbahnhof. Enjoyed a quiet Italian dinner at Ca Dora, next to the hotel.... read more

Another day of heavy fog, so drove straight through Fussen and onto Dachau, via the autobahns. Traffic was less than expected leading into Munich. Dachau, 20km north of Munich, was one of the first of the concentration camps set up by Himmler when the Nazi party came to power in 1933, and the longest lasting. So its name came to symbolise all that was evil in this regime. A very sobering experience walking around the remains - through the entry gate with those chilling words 'ARBEIT MACHT FREI'. First viewed a moving documentary movie, then onto the grounds where the barracks once stood. Through a reconstruction of one, then down to the religious memorials for Jews, Catholics, Protestants and lastly Russian Orthodox. Then through the gas chambers, supposedly never used here, but scarey all the same, ... read more

Woke to very heavy fog, which blanketed our view of Neuschwantein. Visited Hohenschwangau Castle in the morning, built as the summer palace of the kings of Bavaria. Decorated in medieval style, of knights and legends. Here the young Ludwig grew up and was influenced in his design of Neuschwanstein. The eccentric king lavishly decorated the rooms of the castle, all themed to operas of Wagner, who visited the castle often. One room was even built as a cave. By the time we finished the tour of this castle and descended the mountain at 5pm, the sun and blue sky was back again. Dinner again in the hotel restaurant, and an excellent stay here at the Hotel Alpenstuben... read more

Spent the morning exploring the former Imperial city of Rothenburg ob der Tauber, famous for its medieval town walls and Renaissance Rathaus. Walked half way round the city on these walls before heading back to the market square. Then back on to the Romantische Strasse for a lunch break at the town of Dinkelsbuhl, another medieval walled town, full of colourful gabled houses. Realised we had no chance of studying many of these beautiful towns along the way, so headed to our next overnight stop of Hohenschwangau, home of King Ludwigs castles, the most famous Schloss Neuschwanstein. As we approached, the snow cover got heavier. Lucky for us, it had cleared enough in the last week for us to get there. This castle was directly visible from the balcony of our room, and floodlit at night. ... read more

First taste of driving on the Autobahns, quite an experience to be travelling so slowly at 140k/hr. Some cars must have been moving at least 200k/hr. So as well as mastering driving on the right, added the extra skill of changing gears with the right hand. First stop was the city of Wurzburg, with it's magnificent Residenz Palace and Marienberg Fortress. The Palace was mainly destroyed during the later years of World War II, but faithfully restored, with most of the original fittings and furnishings saved. Now started on the Romantische Strasse (Romantic Road), lunch stop being Tauberbischofsheim, with it' s typical rural marketplace, Rathaus (townhall) and colourful half-timbered buildings. A quick picture stop next at Bad Mergentheim. Finally reached our overnight destination of Rothenburg Ob der Tauber about 5pm. Our hotel overlooked the market square, ... read more

Do you believe in karma or omens. Well this morning, while the plan was to have a nice sleep in before our mid afternoon flight, things didn't quite work out that way. No, Gai wasn't dreaming about a possum in the bedroom. So at 5.30am was busy trying to rescue the little culprit. Thank goodness for Andrews dirty footy socks, gave some good protection when finally collared. After getting back on the roof to possum-proof the chimney, was able to get back to the task at hand. So the pessimist would cry why today of all days. But the optimist would count their lucky stars that it didn't happen the day after, with an empty house all day while Andrew's at work, for the possum's enjoyment. Now we are away, next stop Germany ... read more
