Wow what a place, it sums up what i love and loath about the east west debate. Why have we (west) interfieried in so many of these far flung countries. in this case france and america to such horrific results but yet anger and bitterness seems to wash away with the late afternoon showers. A people with on the whole so very little but seems to be happier than so many more people and countries with so much more. Phnom Penh is busy and functional. It wont win any tourist awards but really its not a tourist city. It has many things to occupy 2-3 days of tournist activity many are hard to swallow but need to be seen like the School prison used by the Khmer Rouge, or the killing fields. Harrowing but they tell ... read more

So first time in Sri Lanka.. Why did i come? i do have friends from Sri Lanka, both in Australia and in Kuwait, so that helped. but if i am honest its two additional litigating circumstances that forced the issue. A) the Muslim faith (I live in Kuwait)where the government has a wonderful policy of allotting holidays for every possible reason. this time was just and a big occasion. The EID holiday and the time for giving. So much so they gave me 4 days leave fully paid. Add this to the Arabic New Year based on the lunar calendar and I had myself the time.. B) the reason, why Kuwait is a wonderful place to work because of what it affords you. in this case a decent tax free salary and most importantly the gate ... read more

Second time... Loved it just as much... HCMC is so different form Hanoi yet still it makes me feel the same.. Loved it.. Last time I did the north and hired an old Russian minsk bike and travelled around into the wilderness.. Both time, a lack of travel companion and my need to see HCMC meant this time is was the south. Nothing as adventurous as a Motor bike trip into the back of beyond this time.. HCMC Its a beautiful city, with enough mix of old and new to please all. The reminisce of the war is clear to see in the street art, the tourist tat and traps, or tours to the near by Viet Con tunnels.. And yes you must try and see them.. Be it a feat of engineering brilliance a token ... read more

Went to Beijing for the Olympics.. Went back to see more 6mth later... I didn't know a city could be so hot in summer yet so cold in winter.. I'm currently watching an idiot abroad. (UK comedy travel show) Very funny.. But watching this guy pack pot noddles and monster munch because he doesn't like foreign food.. I laughed but there was times in china i wished i could pull out some home food comforts form my ruc sac. Deep fried chicken intestines, duck tongue, spicy food beyond anything i found in India.. The food is an experience, perhaps a challenge for the Western pallet. But the fun of eating out and going to restaurants is great, the Chinese love to drink. CAMPY is the cry and every man will down his drink and demand you ... read more

It is quite possible India is the most amazing, mental and enchanting place i have ever been... I will be honest I don't know if I love it or hate it.. But after 1 trip and 2nd trip now 3rd it keeps on drawing me back and i cant say NO.. It is shock to every sense you have. The people are wonderful, but very different. They show more emotion and joy than form where I am from (UK). They are as welcoming as you will find, but they will try to sell you and suck money from you in every way you can imagine. There is so much poverty but so much happiness, so much wrong with country but so much very very right. It is modern but has not forgotten its traditions. Its food ... read more

Trip of a life time... Russian Minsk motor bike.. Cruising at... well no idea they have no speedometer but it feels fast going down the hairpin mountain passes... Hanoi to Sapa via Lia Chau Son La Dien Bien Phu Hoa Binh. Take your time... The roads are not great but also still fine.. But you will want to stop for photo after photo after photo.. The will get saddle sore so no need to rush.. Hotels are easy to find in most of the towns you pass.. 15$ average and that was for white-man with-our any local dialect who didn't even try to haggle.. What was great was to see the real vietnam of the north, without tourist without guides or craft shops without postcards.. Well apart from SAPA but by then we were happy for ... read more

When i was young i lived on a council estate.. If your house or block was bad they said it looked like Beirut. That was not meant to be a compliment. But it was a sign of the times in the 80's for both me and Beirut. To reverse that slander i had to write and tell the world that it is worth every accolade you could find, it truly is a city of contrasts. First of all everyone has invaded. So it has a proud history of survival and it has borrowed and adopted a little of each of its visitors.. I can give you a history lesson but Greeks to Venetians to Romans to Persians to crusaders to Arabs to the Syrians and north Africans it has seen them all, even the French up ... read more
