Ola! Some serious recapping to do here, you will be pleased to note. Firstly, I forgot to mention how Orla and I met. I was just returning from my walk along Lake Tekapo, when I bumped into Jill chatting to this girl outside. AS I sat down, she says "Ola!" I looked at her a bit puzzled, wondering why she'd said that and thought immediately that Jill must have told her that I was going to S America. So I put up my hand in a salute and said "Ola!" back. She looked at me like I was completely weird and then said, "no my NAME IS ORLA!!!" Well I did laugh, but was genuinely surprised that no-one else had ever mistaken her introduction as a Spanish greeting. We then got drunk and consolidated our new ... read more

Well hello and hasn't it been a short time since the last blog? I'm trying to sort them all out and get up to date before I leave for South Smerica on tuesday....ie tomorrow!!!! I'm very excited about it, if not a little anxious, as I am entering into unchartered waters big time. The blogs have also come very close together, as there has been an international problem with the downloading of pictures which has delayed to publishing of blogs. I've manged to finally find a way around it, despite my limited IT knowledge, so result! One of the things I love about the Aussies and the Kiwis, is their sense of humour. I remember in Oz, I saw an advert on the side of a plumbers van which said "You dont have to sleep with ... read more

So I gratefully left Wellington and shook off my boredom and got the ferry to the south island. I have to say that arriving through the Marlborough sounds was breathtaking. We arrived at Picton then caught the coach to Nelson where I stayed for 3 days. On the way in I went quad biking and on the skywire, which is a 4 seater chair attached to a line across the rainforest and you freefall pretty much right the way across forwards, then backwards at approx 90km/hr! Its awesome and i went on it 4 times for the one price. Bargain and I have to thank Leigh our guide for that, as I cheekily asked to go again and again! I had booked in at Paradiso hostel and this is a word of warning...DO NOT STAY HERE ... read more

Kia Ora - Welcome! Well I finally made it to New Zealand...paradise as my kiwi friend Craig calls it and i have to say it is beautiful. The lovely Jean welcomed me at Auckland airport having patiently waited for over an hour due to delays at passport control where they only saw fit to have on 3 officers for over 500 passengers. Not much of a welcome at 1am i must say. However moving on......Jean has been the perfect host. Turfing out Sarah from her room to provide me with my own room and a double bed that was far too comfortable and had me sleeping in on my first day here...clearly needed the rest. This travelling lark really does take it out of you! I had, unusually for me, given my trip here absolutely no ... read more

Toronga zoo - but first... Well I have been in Sydney now for 17 days and surprise surprise, am loving it! One of the best ways to see Sydney is to get a weekly travel ticket, which allows you to take all buses and ferries for minimum $32. The bigger the area, the more the ticket is. The passenger ferry takes you all around the harbour and is an excellent and cheap way to see it and avoids costly harbour cruises. My international student card is not so accepted in this state though annoyingly, as I have to be a NSW student to benefit, which I think is very unfair! Despite that, Ive been to several museums and art galleries, round the Rocks area, where I bought my first present since being away...it was a CD ... read more

First, a few facts - I can nearly get all my hair into a ponytail; I'm hungover; I'm a parade official for the Mardi Gras parade on the 2nd March 2008, so look out for me!; I hate vodaphone, they are crap; my MP3 player broke on me again, but is now working after "rebuilding" itself, unnervingly; I sunbathed for the fist time since I left the UK today; I will have a surprise for you all as of next week..with a picture as proof (you'll never guess!). Secondly, I received an email from Steve, the zookeeper who I got chatting to at Adelaide Zoo (cf previous blog). How random, but how lovely! he was searching for tiger pics and came up with my blog, of all things! (it makes me wonder what other searches are ... read more

Oh lordy yes..... It wasnt quite what I expected to be honest. I was expecting a smaller group, there was ... read more

I'm now in Cairns and finally get a chance to scribe another blog before I head off very early tomorrow for 3 days to the outer reef for my advanced diving course. cant wait! So, arriving in Airlie Beach, it was spitting with rain, but not to be put off, i went to check in at Koalas hostel and found that my shared room smelt of urine. lovely. I did however have a bottom bunk, so kind of a result. i decided to go for a wander instead and breathe deeply while I had the chance. Lovely cooked breakfast after my tiring journey and checked in at Oz experience for the sailing on the Kiana the next day. Basically, there was little else to do here. It was still spitting and there are no activities whatsoever ... read more

My coach trip up from Brissy to Hervey Bay was relatively uneventful. I sat next to an asian lady and took the opportunity of perhaps making a new friend on the 8 hr journey. So i asked her where she was going. she gave me a concerned frown in response. so i asked again and suggested destination as an alternative word that she would understand. she now looked very worried, but i persevered asking her again the same question and offering her that I was going to hervey bay. she looked relieved and said that her job was...no no i said, where are you going? cairns?? oh she said the gold coast. right then, so somewhere along the east coast of australia, how vague is that? right, so no conversation with her then. she promptly fell ... read more
