Spain - The Best for Last

Finally back home and able to post the very last blog entry. Well, maybe once the photos are all sorted (all 20GB!) I'll post a "Favorite Pics" entry. Everything about Spain was wonderful, it was a great place to end the year. After stuffing our faces in Italy with proscuitto and parmigiano (types of cured-ham and cheese), we continued to stuff our faces in Spain with jamon and manchego (types of cured-ham and cheese). Our journey started in Madrid where we rented a car and drove through the endless vineyards and olive tree fields. Maybe it was because it was low-season, but there weren't many cars on the road. Along with the selection of French ballads and Spanish flamenco music on the radio, we were kept entertained by the tumbleweed. These tumbleweeds were daring, and every ... read more

As we stepped off the airplane in Iceland we envisioned mounds of snow cascading the Icelandic landscape. What we encountered was rain and bleakness. The 50km drive to the capital city of Reykjavik (I could not figure out the reasoning as to WHY it was so far away) was through a moon-like terrain, with fields of black lava rock. Reykjavik reminded me of Scandinavia: colourful houses, stylish boutiques, kiosks selling the cheapest food available - hot dogs, and being able to pay by credit card for absolutely everything. We rented a car to explore the southern coast. We got the most economical car available, since gasoline was 6 times more expensive than what we were paying in Oman! Our Toyota Yaris managed to shelter us from the wind, but when the road turned to ice and ... read more

Small country, big selection of cheeses. Switzerland is small enough to drive everywhere. But if you plan on driving into the mountains, expect snow even if 10 minutes below the grass is green. I decided to take advantage of Dimpy’s temporary assignment in Neuchatel which included a rental car and unlimited mileage. We toured a few big cities and relaxed in effervescent thermal springs surrounded by snowy mountains in Ovronnaz. The languages and architecture changed quickly as we crossed regional borders. But it didn’t matter where in Switzerland we were, all the buildings appeared clean and stylish, even new buildings retained the quaintness of older ones. Being back in the Western World meant that cheese and milk were available in unlimited varieties. The question was not ‘how many cheeses can I try?’ but ‘how much cheese ... read more

Dubai, United Arab Emirates Salaam Alaykum! (Hello in Arabic) From Nepal we went to the Arabian Peninsula. First stop: Dubai, the most populated of the 7 Emirates in UAE. We were in culture shock after stepping off the plane. Dubai is a metropolis of elegant hotels, expensive shopping, and traffic jams. Where no one walks outside, even if it's just to cross the street. Luckily for us, Emanuele moved to Dubai 2 months before our arrival so that we had a free place to stay. We had access to a pool and squash courts; next door was the Raffles Hotel, a 5-star hotel where they wouldn't let Paolo through the entrance with his shorts on! The day after our arrival Dimpy came to join us for 2 weeks. Her distant family friend took us on a ... read more

Unfortunately our memory sticks are corrupted, and we are unable to post some of our best pictures. But here are a few pics from Nepal, the country we've loved the most on this trip. These few photos give you an idea of the country side, the people, and the 20 days we spent trekking with only 10kg of clothing and equipment. Enjoy! ... read more

Cat Ba Island We flew into Hai Phong, Vietnam's third largest city with a large port. This was our gateway to Cat Ba Island located in the World Heritage Site Halong Bay. We hopped on a ferry, and as soon as the mainland disappeared we noticed black clouds looming in the distance. Soon, we were in a rain storm, the ferry was rocking and the waves were crashing against the windows. When we got to the island, we got off the boat and were drenched within seconds. We found a hotel, with a room on the top floor overlooking the entire bay and all the fishing boats that had returned from the sea. The natural beauty of the karsts attracts weekend tourists from Hanoi and on weekend hotel prices triple on the island! Our second day ... read more

Off to Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia for the 2007 Chu (or Choo depending on whose ID you look at) family reunion. It was my Uncle’s 70th birthday, 400 guests and family members from around the world came to participate in the festivities (my mom was the only sibling of 9 that didn’t make it). My cousin Cze Yan was the unofficial event coordinator who maintained spreadsheets of everyone’s arrival/departure dates, mobile numbers (even we got a mobile to use!), and the daily activities taking place. Thankfully a couple of my uncles are retired and were the self-appointed drivers; walking around town was unheard of unless it was to do shopping at the giant 1-Utama mall that had Chu representation on a daily basis. We arrived 3 days before the party and were given a crash hula course ... read more

Hue We started our one month adventure of Vietnam halfway down the country in the ancient capital of Hue. Immediately the change in countries was apparent, the sounds of horns and hoarkers was continuous, touts selling hashish and motorbike rentals were at every storefront, and there were tourists everywhere. Hoi An Hoi An was a crossroad of economic-cultural flows in Vietnam and Southeast Asia from the end of the 16th century to the early 19th century. It was also the gate through which Buddhism and Christianity were introduced into Vietnam in the 17th century. Now it is full of clothing, lantern and art shops. Some tailors claim to have a perfectly fitted suit complete in 4 hours! We wandered the street and window-shopped knowing full well that we had no room in our bags to carry ... read more

We travelled by bus from NE Thailand to Central Laos. Our first stop was Pakse where we encountered our first tasty baguette. After weeks of tasteless, white bread from the 7-11 where crust-less loaves were an option, I was stocked with peanut butter to satisfy my old breakfast routine. As we roamed the streets of Pakse we noticed something was missing, no one was hassling us. The motorcycles approached us and when they noticed we weren't interested they just rode away. The children we encountered greeted us with smiling faces and waves. The adults acknowledged our presence but were a little more reserved. They seemed comfortable to let us observe them in their daily lives and haven't (yet) changed their ways of life to cater to the tourism industry that is guaranteed to experience a giant ... read more
