The departure After leaving Dar es Salam and getting on the bus towards Mangula A (and yes there is both an B and C villages in close proximity) with the Sister and Soudi a.k.a. Shadow we soon realised that this would be the last time we meet in a couple of months. This because of my previously rather ambitious plans of crossing back through Kenya and accompany the Sister from Dar es Salam to her flight home from Johannesburg in the beginning of May. However realising this was not possible we had to make our quick farewells when the bus stopped to let them off. So from now on I’m alone, kind of scary and a little sad but at the same time exiting. The Sister and Soudi dropped an hour before reaching Morogoro and I ... read more

The north To start from the beginning we didn’t arrive straight from Moshi to the beach but started the travel in Dar es Salam by visiting a friend of the Sister. Her boyfriend currently works outside of Dar in Tegeta. We stayed at their place for three nights and had time for a daytrip northward to Bagamojo where we were to visit the Art College, an independent school for artistic education such as music, dance and artwork. Perfect for the Sister who is, for those who don’t know her, addicted to dancing. Meet a finish girl who studied there as well as Margaret, a Swedish lady we got to know at the festival on Zanzibar. Nice people who showed us around the place. At this time the semester for the school had just started, meaning that ... read more

Now as promised follows detailed description of a long walk uphill, followed by a very short walk up high and a shorter one downhill. I will also, and only for your benefit, throw in a relatively fast one at the very end, enjoy! To begin our story we arrived in Moshi, the town at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro who lives and breathes because of the mountain. To summarize it short, if you ever feel like going on safari in the Serengeti/Ngorongoro area of Tanzania or climb Kilimanjaro, and if you don’t mind haggling, simply travel to Moshi and walk around because you’ll get offers thrown your way at every street corner. There is absolutely no need to make reservations in advance even if you want to start the next day. Machame route (2012-02-15 to ... read more

Pemba Next part of this endeavour of a “backpacking” experience takes us to the beautiful Island Pemba in Tanzania. Located a scorching five hours boat ride from Dar es Salam with a brief stop on Zanzibar to cram up on fuel and more passengers Africa style i.e. the floor is equally good place to sit. Not remembering to much of the horrible accident in 2011 when 800 passengers went down with the ferry running the route from Dar to Pemba where overweight was the supposed cause of the capsizing. However after arriving to Pemba, trying to get transport to the hotel were I was to meet up with my parents and sister, only to realise they wanted as much as the charge for the boat ride to this island I got on the local bus. The ... read more

From Island to town... Well guess who has returned from a wonderful ten days on Inhaca, sure internet was present there but I choose to ignore this and forget about the digital world for a while. Spend my first two days in Maputo at Fatima’s backpackers, cosy little place with a camping area for those like me who enjoy staying really cheap... Mostly been spending my days walking around town, seeing what’s changed and taking the chappa to the beach for some well deserved relaxation time. I’m learning. So far only got scammed once and it was simply a stupid mistake made by me not agreeing on a price of the food beforehand. Kind of hard to bargain when you’ve already eaten... Took the ferry to Inhaca in Sunday (22/1), already red skinned and acing so ... read more
