Here I am back home in Sherwood Park. Back to a beautiful spring day in the comfort of my two story home, back with my family, neighbors, friends, work ... bills, house cleaning, phone soliciters, ... Oh well, some things never change! It feels quite surreal to be back after having had such an amazing experience. I am so grateful to have been able to travel as I did. Everyone at home was ok - kids did just fine, Penny is ok, mom and dad are ok, everyone at work is just fine. So what did I gain from this experience? I think it was really good for me to see that it doesn't matter my age, I can still have adventures. I don't think I'm afraid to travel anywhere now - even on my own ... read more

Well, this will be my second to last entry in this travel blog. I wanted to update you on our last days in China, and then do a bit of reflecting on my whole Asia experience. I am actually writing this while I’m sitting in the comfort of my basement at home in front of my high speed computer and high speed internet connection. Accessing internet in China was harder than in Vietnam or Cambodia - not because it didn’t exist, but because of the cost. We were staying fabulous 5 star hotels which must assume that since you can afford to rent a room, you can afford $30.00 per hour for internet. I don’t mean to be cheap, but that is a rip off! We managed to find a few “internet bars” to return e-mail ... read more

Thank goodness we are flying from one location to the next. The last week has been truly a whirlwind tour through China. We began, as I showed in my last entry in Beijing. There are so many wonderous things to see in Beijing and our tour guide "River", did a wonderful job of touching on many of the highlights. We walked the Great Wall, crossed Tiennamen Square, wandered through the Forbidden City, visited the Emperor's Summer Palace as well as the Emperors' Tomb and visited a number of stunning pagodas. Although we thought we would be one of 12 -14 tourists on our tour with JVC travel out of Edmonton, we are the only people in our group. So in every location we are greated at the airport by our private tour guide and driver. We ... read more

Hello everyone: I'm in China with Larry at last. We had a little challenge meeting up, but I'll tell you all that story on my return ... have to leave something to talk about! We have been in Beijing for 3 days now and seen tons. Tiennamen Square, The Forbidden City, Earth Temple, The Temple of Heaven, Ming Tombs, The Olympic sites, and today we walked the Great Wall of China and visited the Summer Palace. We have a wonderful tour guide. Better yet, Larry and I are the only members of our tour group. We feel like celebrities as our private driver drops us off at the site gates, our tour guide buys our entry tickets and then we wander through the beautiful sites getting detailed explanations in fabulous English! Our hotel is also beautiful ... read more

Hello all: I'm on my last three days in Vietnam. My friend Denis helped me arrange an overnight train to SaPa which is in the northeastern highlands. It is the location of the highest peak in Vietnam and the terrain is a little like the Kootney Valley in BC. The area is especially well known for a number of hill tribe people who live in small villages in the area. Many of them travel into the town to sell home made crafts, in particular hand embroidered wares. I spent the morning just wandering around town and in the afternoon booked a motorcycle driver to take me to a neighboring village. I wandered around the village accompanied by 4 women who showed me their homes and told me a bit about their life in the village. Two ... read more

I left the warmth of southern Vietnam to arrive in Hanoi to cooler temperatures and rain. I only had 2 days of rain since January 20, so I have been very spoiled. Not only was it raining in Hanoi, but the temperatures were considerably cooler, 16 C. , but it felt much colder. I was lucky enough to be able to stay at my friend, Carmen Bissonnette's brother's home in Hanoi. The home, as probably most homes in Vietnam, does not have central heating, so I must admit that I slept in most of my clothes the first night in his home. Denis, and his wife Van Ang are wonderful hosts. Denis works as an instructor for the Open University in Hanoi in the Travel and Tourism department. With his many connections, he was able to ... read more

The city of Hoi An is relatively small - only about 75,000 people. But in addition to a fabulous beach, Hoi An is also the place to shop. There are about 3 very long streets along the river that runs through the town, which are lined with custom made clothing stores. You can either select from the designs they have on display, bring in a picture of something you like or browse through catalogues and choose what you wish. Dresses, shirts, suits, skirts, coats, blouses … you name it - they sew it. For the most part, the clothes are made of silk, but you can also choose wool or cotton. I walked into a dress shop that one of the girls at the hotel recommended (her sister’s shop) in the morning. This evening I’m going ... read more

It's hard to believe that my time in Vietnam is almost at an end. I decided to cut my volunteer teaching time short by one week because I really wanted to spend a little more time seeing places in Vietnam before meeting Larry in Beijing. But before letting me leave, my evening students took Gloria, Leanne and I on a field trip - literally. I had mentioned once that I had only seen rice fields from a distance and never actually seen rice growing. So the group took us to a small B&B type of place outside the city and we not only saw rice fields but sugar cane, mango trees, corn fields, coconut palms and a whole assortment of vegetation. The owner of the property, using a horse-drawn cart, took us on a tour throughout ... read more

Hi Everyone: I am taking advantage of the higher speed computer at the hotel I am at in Da Lat and publishing a quick blog entry. Unfortunately I left 2 of my memory cards in Nha Trang, so I can only publish pictures I've taken in the last two weeks. I know I have a ton of flower photos - I just can't help myself. I have no idea what I will do with all the flower shots when I get home, but at the time I see these things (especially considering the long white winters we have at home), I just can't help but take the shot. So I dedicate this page to Oma Mueller, Ann, Irena and all my other family and friends who love flowers. The rest of you will just have to ... read more

Good times in Nha Trang

I have not been as diligent at publishing lately. I think because I've settled into the routine and rhythm of Nha Trang. When I took my Intro to ESL course at NorQuest, one of the instructors talked about stages of "culture shock". I remember him talking about how one of the stages was an embracing of the culture accompanied by rejection of the traveller's home culture. I won't say that I have rejected our culture at home - I sure miss the conveniences and ease of many things at home, but most of all I miss the people. But I can say that I've fallen into an easy acceptance of the pace of life and the routine here. That's not to say that it's a "Hey, man - don't worry - be happy" kind of pace, ... read more
