Wednesday, February 3rd The last day of our diet dawned sunny and hot. There was no spring in Karamea this year. It went from winter straight into summer in a matter of days. All we could think about though, was the end of our diet and the promise of a meal without rice. Before we started the diet we had taken front and side pictures of our mid-sections, because without a scale we thought pictures might tell us if we’d improved visually. Looking at the ‘before’ and ‘after’ pics we saw that Talita had lost her boobs and butt, while Ferdi lost a bit around the waist and under the boobs. Both of us, unfortunately, still had our bellies intact. Seems these will have to be destroyed with another diet session or some serious exercise. Ferdi ... read more

Sunday, January 31st Before we left for the Zig Zag track Ferdi decided to check the Boesman’s oil. When he opened the engine bay he found a little hitch-hiker, a mummified (and most likely cooked) rat lying on top of the engine. When we arrived at the track he tried to take it out, but the body came apart when he pulled at it. Eventually most of the rat was on the road and we took off up the track. This time we actually jogged a bit, but running up a steep track is hard work. We loved it though and hope that we’ll be able to jog it all the way up and down before we leave Karamea. Back in the shed Talita kept sanding on the gunwales while Ferdi did more filling work on ... read more

Thursday, January 28th The human body is a truly amazing thing. Ferdi’s wounded thumb is already almost as good as new. He doesn’t even have to keep it covered anymore. Anyway, this morning, just as Ferdi walked out the cabin with his toothbrush in his mouth, Paddy arrived. We hadn’t seen him for a few days, which was a little unusual. We’d decided that if he didn’t visit today we’d drive out to his place this afternoon. Turns out he missed us (not that he’d admit it in so many words, but we knew) so he came for a cuppa. Talita showed off her flute skills, but when Paddy took the flute for a play he said that the flute had “lost it”, meaning the sound it produced was not up to his standards. He said ... read more

Monday, January 25th The canoe was coming along at a good pace, and we were getting eager to finish her, not just for the pleasure of launching her, but also because we have a feeling that our time in Karamea will soon come to an end. Since this is her birth place we’d really like to launch her here in the estuary. The thought of leaving this place fills us with a sense of loss, but unless there’s some kind of miracle, we’re here on borrowed time. One thing is for certain; we’ll return here again and again, no matter where we might end up. The friends we’ve made and the kindness we’ve received here are beyond anything we could’ve expected. Karamea is a very special place. Ferdi just wanted to install the gunwales, but after ... read more

Friday, January 22nd After a good night sleep we woke to an overcast and drizzly morning. After breakfast we crawled back into bed. This kind of weather doesn’t inspire us to get up and go. Just before 10am we were roused by the sound of a familiar engine note. Paddy had arrived! We invite him in, prepared a cuppa, and spent more than an hour chatting. When he’d gone we did the cleaning, then spent some time sanding down the inwales. Ferdi’s injured thumb was surprisingly painless, until he bumped it of course. Then it flared with great pain, letting him know it was still there. John remarked that that’s where the old saying “Sticking out like a sore thumb” comes from. You just can’t help bumping it into things. We had lunch and then decided ... read more

Tuesday, January 19th By the time we crawled out of bed Paddy was up already, eating toast and drinking tea. None of us had got enough sleep, but it was worth it! After breakfast we all piled into his truck and headed into Westport. Our first stop was to pick up some groceries. The second was the Mitre 10 to get one more sheet of fibreglass cloth and more catalyst for the resin. A few weeks ago Paddy had talked about air brushing and it peaked our interest. We thought it would be really cool if we could do some air brush work on the canoe. We spotted a nice looking air brush kit and decided to get it. It wasn’t very expensive, so we thought we’d give it a try. Before leaving Westport we stopped ... read more

Saturday, January 16th A rainy morning greeted us, but lucky for us it turned into another sunny day. We headed to the shed and spent about 15mins cleaning the stray strands of fibreglass off the seams. Then we called it a day. Talita wasn’t feeling her happy self and we decided to take the day off and just relax. We sat out by the estuary for a while, then did the cleaning and had lunch. We received the great news that Talita became an aunt for the third time. Jaco and Sarah had their son Elion Minty yesterday at 3pm UK time. He weighed in at 3.02 kg and has black hair. Congrats you guys! May God bless your family and may Elion be a blessing to you always. After lunch Ferdi spent a while pickling ... read more

Wednesday, January 13th The first order of business for the day was to fill all the remaining gaps in the centre seams of the canoe. After that Ferdi continued working on the second paddle while Talita helped John peal off the protective plastic layer on the perspecs panels that will go into the phone booth. This turned out to be a huge mission. The perspecs had been laying around for a good ten years and the protective layer was so thin and brittle that you could only get off a very small piece at a time. Eventually they resorted to using turpentine to try and get it off. This helped in that it gave the layer some elasticity, making it easier to get it off. When all the panels were finally clear of those confounded protective ... read more

Sunday, January 10th The south-westerlies brought with it a ton of rain, which it proceeded to dump on Karamea. The good news was that our third attempt at laminating a paddle had worked, so we laminated the second one and weighed it down with paint drums. Ferdi started the shaping work on that paddle, using an electric planer, belt sander and random orbital sander to sand out the shape he was after. While shaping the handle the belt sander decided attacked Ferdi and chewed up his unsuspecting shirt. Now he looks even more like a carpenter’s orphan; covered in sawdust and holes in his shirt. Just before noon we went for a garden tour at Gary and Rose’s place. It was part of the Knowledge Swap workshops that are running in Karamea at the moment. It’s ... read more

Thursday, January 7th The good times didn’t last. The sun got a few glimpses of Karamea today, but these were few and far between. The rest of the day was overcast and rainy. Talita woke with a sore throat, and she was slow getting out of bed. Ferdi could hardly keep his pants on, because we’d finished fiberglassing the top panels and were ready to stitch them to the hull. While Talita was still in bed, Ferdi went for an inspection. The panels were fine, but the paddles delaminated easily. It seems that resin isn’t a good replacement for glue. After serving breakfast in bed, Ferdi dragged Talita to the shed where we stitched the last of the panels to the hull. Our canoe is finally starting to look like one! We found a fairly large ... read more
