Ingredients 1 onion 2/3 cloves garlic 2 courgettes 1/2 tomatoes 1 red/yellow/orange pepper Italian herbs I chicken stock cube salt and pepper to taste Cajun seasoning 250 gms tofu 3 or 4 small mushrooms Couscous or bread roll (or 2) Chop onion into small pieces and fry in a little oil (spray can canola etc is convenient), add finely chopped garlic. Once they've started to fry gently, toss in chopped courgettes, tomatoes, pepper and add seasoning. Add a little water if it looks like it's sticking to the pan. If there's some white wine lying around, now's a good time to add it. But not too much - it's better drunk. Add seasoning. Allow the whole lot to cook and soften up for 10 to 15 minutes. Then add tofu and mushrooms and let them warm through for ... read more

Here I am in Raglan, looking at a real estate leaflet with properties for sale in Port Waikato. $284,000 for a "classic beach bach" doesn't sound too bad. Here in Raglan, you would be lucky to get a section for that. The two settlements have a number of things in common. They are both on the West Coast. One has a harbour, the other has the country's biggest river spilling out into the Tasman. Both are close to centres with much bigger populations - Hamilton and Auckland. But that's about where the similarities end. Raglan is reggae vibe and way cool. Port Waikato is Coast Radio and hits from the 60s. It still hasn't discovered the meaning of the word cool. But I like it. Just as the music is from the 60s, so too is ... read more

By the time the train pulled out of Auckland's Britomart Transport Centre I was feeling slightly troubled. Not in any kind of serious way, just a bit flat. I'd had a wonderful week at home with Judy - a week in which we'd caught up with family and a few friends and had time to ourselves, an opportunity for me to tell her about my travels and to hear what was happening with her. And to plan for the next few weeks and months. Now, suddenly, I was on a train to an uncertain future and all that I cared about was behind me. MOMENTS OF DOUBT I asked myself, why was I making this journey? What was it going to achieve and what good was it going to do me or anyone else? Deep down ... read more

A man I could only assume was a teacher strode towards me purposefully. I'd barely got the bike on its stand and was lifting my camera to take a snap when he demanded to know what I was doing. For a moment I was 14-years-old again, and I felt a wave of resentment. Then I remembered my 59 years and as civilly as I could told him I was taking a picture, and let the words hang in the air for a few seconds before explaining I'd once been a boarder at Carruth House, Whangarei Boys' High School. I asked him why he wanted to know, and he muttered something about 'security'. It was the morning after Guy Fawkes, and I wondered if any former inmates had been threatening to blow the place apart. As we ... read more

A man looking remarkably like Feral Mike has been spotted lurking (see exclusive pictures) in cafes in Ponsonby, Auckland, leading to a claim that his solo bike ride of Northland never happened. Did Feral Mike Ever Set Out? An unreliable source says Feral Mike didn't leave the city, but has been lying low until the past few days and making up his blogs by stealing information and pictures from the internet. The source claims Feral Mike's confidence is growing because he believes he's got away with the scam. As a result, he's become brave enough recently to appear in public wearing a yellow cycle helmet to help hide his identity (pictures in the past have shown him wearing a black one). Feral Mike Defends Himself Feral Mike broke his silence late this afternoon to deny the ... read more

The search for a real latte ended in failure. But the day was not ruined. By late afternoon I reached a stunning DoC campground at a place called Mimiwhangata. The last few kilometres were along a gravel road with a steep climb and final descent. Best Kept Secret Mimiwhangata has to be one of the best kept secrets. It's a beautiful, sheltered spot with bush and farmland behind it. The campsite is a five minute walk from the carpark, up, over and down a steep path. And the facilities are limited, just toilets and cold water. The main beach is a perfect, long curve. The campsite is at a much smaller bay, with a few trees for shade and a lovely outlook. When I stayed in early November, I was the only person. Hell on ... read more

One more cup of coffee for the road One more cup of coffee 'fore I go To the valley below Bob Dylan It was a perfect morning and I was in the perfect mood to enjoy it. The sun was shining but the day was still cool, and with no overnight dew my tent was dry when I packed it up. I was fed and watered and the road lay before me - full of promise. What more could a person want? Coffee! Even before I'd reached the 100 kph sign on the outskirts of Russell the thought had flashed through my mind. What could make a perfect day more perfect? A big steaming latte, frothy on the top with one of those tubes of white sugar (or better still brown) poured onto it and stirred ... read more

AK47 FOR Sale New & Unused. Orginal AK47. Current owner planned office massacre unless he got time off. He no longer believes the 'American solution' is the answer. This weapon was purchased direct from the Russian manufacturer, it is not a cheap imitation from Pakistan's North West Frontier. Owner says must sell and end use is not important, but would prefer buyer to be someone with interest in clay bird shooting or similar. Price by negiotiation. FIRST GOAL ACHIEVED Zipping down the last three kilometres to the campsite was a relief, even though the road was loose metal and windy and my concentration had long gone. For the first time since leaving Auckland I was exhausted. 90 Mile Beach had been fun, for most of the way. Within the first couple of minutes of setting ... read more

DRAMA ON NINETY MILE BEACH Cycle tourist Feral Mike has been thrown from his bike, known as the Beast of Burden, in a moment of drama on a Northland beach. The incident happened on Ninety Mile Beach, as the pair were within three kilometres of exiting at Te Paki Stream. At a hastily called news conference in Kaitaia this afternoon, Feral Mike said the Beast had been behaving perfectly up until that moment. But the Beast allowed a crosswind to let it veer off course into a soft patch of sand. The Beast buried his front wheel into the sand and stopped. "IT WAS A SORT OF FLOATING EXPERIENCE" "Instead of doing 20 plus ks an hour on the Beast, I was doing them through the air. It was a sort of floating experience - ... read more
