If a Chinese needs to apply for a US visa, he/she needs to pay $130 . Other countries charge Chinese less, so Chinese gov charges their citizens less.

Thanks
Thanks for the shout-out Eddie. It will be treasured. Your final thought is inspiring, impressive and amazing. I'm happy you're home because I get to see you more, but I'm sad that I will have no further writings of the Adventures of Ed to look forward to.

Wow
You really have a gift for putting pen to paper and perhaps you'll follow your dad's journey into writing. Whatever it is, I hope to read about it. Congrats brother. Dan

Thank you!
I'm a Syrian/Lebanese family historian, and am so pleased you were able to trace some of your ancestor's steps. Thanks for making the accounting of your trip available. Your writing style is indeed a delightful one. Felt like I was right there with my grandparents.

I can see why you were all riled up about losing your toiletries...One must keep his beard neat! Just reading about that painful bus ride and the 16 day trek is enough to arouse my lower back pains. How do you know that the fields of greens are fields of marijuana? Hmmm...:-? Those lovely scenic pictures make me want to breakout the soundtrack, "The Sound of Music." You can't be using words like "pansies" when you have a curling iron as an item of your possessions. You should not be too harsh and think that it is totally wrong to have someone carry your things. As long as they get paid good money for doing the job, it is okay. It gives these men jobs, employment. If they were trying to earn a living by trying to carry your things, they would have starved to death by now. Another reason I can't be doing this kind of trip is the part about the showers. I hope there are hot water. I can't take cold showers. I would be smelling like a homeless person instead.

CHARMING AND RIVETING ACCOUNT
Dear Son, One of the beauties of your blog is that your family can live your adventures with you. I would never attempt such a trek, but I am pleased that you accomplished it. Speaking as a professional writer, I'm also awarding you an A+ for your work. Love, Dad

Eddie, Again, I am shocked and amazed by this beautiful account of something I don't know if I'll ever have the pleasure of experiencing myself. One thing, only ONE Golden Child reference? NOthing about the Ayante Dagger or Saddam Numski? I'm appalled!

That is just fabulous that you hang out with the kids playing crickets. It sounded like they were outcasts. I guess the caste system still exist in India to this extent. In my assessment of the policeman's behavior, he didn't want a foreigner to be around these "slumdogs" because your presence there elevates their status to a certain degree and he doesn't like that at all. Your stay at Sivananda Ashram down in Kerala came across as if you were living the life of a monk or an ascetic. You never did mention what the "purpose and significance of the more unusual rules" were. I am truly envious that you are able to sit in meditation without bodily pain. Sitting meditation is a method that can lead to enlightenment. Ponder on this comment "Amidst a thought, there is no thought."

Ed- As always this was fascinating. I look forward to talking about all this with you in person when you are back in the states. In the meantime - since you read a bunch, can you recommend any books? I'm always in the market for new stuff. Keep it up and enjoy this leg of your trip.

A Dad's Reflection
It is pleasing to read in this amazing piece of personal journalism of the similarities between Father and Son -- we both love children, laughter and an occasional beverage. But what I found most striking was the beautiful evocation of night on the beach at Ko Phi Lay. I recommend it to all who are literate and have soul. Herbert Hadad a/k/a Abu Salim

Korea/Hong Kong
Things are so quiet at work, I now have time to read your blog. So, I keep getting confused with the switcheroo you did between writing about Korea and Hong Kong. Each country deserves its own blog, pretty please on top of red velvet cake. "The Spirit of Lo Pan..." Hmmm...The "Pan" where the letter "P" should have a "Ph" or "F" sound. So, if you have written, "The Spirit of Lo Fond or Fun" which would more accurately reflect the cantonese pronunciation and it translates to "The Spirit of White Man (or Caucasian dude)". Yes! I got it, right! The picture of Ben and some other English teachers feast on some Korean BBQ...I thought there was more to korean food then just barbeque...? That airline rep was either trying to practice more english by being repetitive or waiting for you to give him a tip.

HUMOR AND HONESTY
Dear Edward Salim, your report sizzles with both. I appreciate and admire your writing. I see where other bloggers and blogettes suggest that you may have a career in writing. Definitely worth pondering as you continue your odyssey. Enjoy yourself. Stay warm. Stay safe. Love from your Dad, his alleged Wife, and our alleged Children (trying to be funny; stop me now.)

There has been an annoucement overnight (02 09 2010) about the find of an Iron Age Temple in Jordan complete with what is thought to be a figure of the god Hadad No doubt you will be up to date with this but anyway I thought I'd note it From the descriptrion of the statue, Mr Hada dos not look like the "new" find Its got 4 legs for a start Sorry about that!
