April 1st 2012

The day has started out cool, overcast and rainy. Oh dear where has all the sunshine gone? Boarding a bus for a 5 hr, 200 kms journey. This will be our last chance to sight see another small pocket of Vietnam. When your looking for beaches Mui Ne will be the one most travelers will mention. Best known for the red sand dunes, Fairy Stream, a few historic temples and fresh seafood. The weather has deteriorated and it is bucketing down, as we get closer the bus starts dropping people off at their hotels all along the coast, this bus will then continue onto Nha Trang. Finally our stop, checking in is once again a simple process, we have a great little bungalow right next to the pool, how great is that? The beach is just ... read more

Heading south the landscape has change to flat dried rice field, less population and cattle (Brahmans) are used as a means of transporting goods Over the past 5 weeks we have seen the humble scooter and small 110cc motorbike carry the most incredible assortment of things. eg another motorbike, piled high and wide with chickens, bags of bottles, bananas, cow, pigs and so much more. Our mini bus has had to make a detour to collect some other travelers who's bus has broken down, we are now running a bit behind time, what was to be 4 hrs has taken 5hrs. On arrival at the Prek Chak - Cua Khau Quoc international border between Cambodia and Vietnam, we are asked to walk through no man's land from one country to another, on the way a sign ... read more

It's a bit of a bus shuffle this morning, two changes within a small distance until we reach the bus station. Expected ETA is 4pm, so far the road has been comfortable traveling. Not much has changed in scenery, still dry rice fields and small one room houses on very long polls. The bus hits it's brakes and we, very narrowly miss colliding with a rider on a scooter, it appears he just turned out in front of the bus, he goes flying across the road side ways trying to keep control of his bike, dust everywhere, looking back through the window I can see he is OK and back on his feet. Thank goodness! Our bus driver is a horn tooting demon speeding along. Phenom Phenn is a mix of new and old style buildings. ... read more

Day 1 - Up nice and early for our flight to Siem Reap, Cambodia. Arriving very early at the International Airport, but soon find ourselves being herded to check in, then onto a plane headed to Pakse - Lao 6.30am departure, it seems a little strange as our plane is not due to leave until 8:15am and meant to be a direct flight. When we asked we are told the flight had been cancelled. We will now have to wait 4 hrs in transit at Pakse, something we were trying to avoid. One thing we have learned while traveling is to only believe half of what you see and are told. Go with the flow, it all works out in the end. Pakse Airport, our transit stop we will be our last touch with Lao soil. ... read more

Our 10 am VIP bus to Vientiane finally leaves 10.45am it's suppose to take only 3hrs, the road is very rough, the bus speedo os not working, the odd speed sign suggest 30km, the other instrument lights are flickering on and off. Just imagine traveling on 50mts of tar then 100mts of red rocky dirt road all the way, and takes 6 hrs instead! Not only the bus is rattling so are our teeth and wobbly bits. It must be hard for the people living on the road edge in small villages much of what I can see through our dust covered window is also covered in thickly in red dust. This is the main road from Vang Vieng to Vientiane. The Vientiane bus depot is about 10 mins from town and requires separate transportation into ... read more

Our flight number for Luang Prabang is now calling us to the boarding gate, 8.30pm departure. We pass through 2 main gates down a few flight of stairs and boarded a shuttle bus. Looking towards the tarmac we see one small lonely Lao plane, surely this can not be for us!!! it's less than 100mts away! Finally the shuttle bus moves. It seems so funny as we pull up along side that exact plane. All aboard, it's not long before we're in the air, 1 hr 30mins, dinner and drinks provided. I'm so glade we took this option, I'm starting to get calluses on my bum. A tuk tuk delivers us to our next hotel, family owned. This is in the old section of town, there is a 11.30pm night curfew, no drinking or drunken behavior ... read more

An early start today, as we head to Halong Bay for a cruise around the bay on a junk. Still overcast and drizzlly, not very promising, but still hope to capture the beauty of Halong Bay and relax, as it's been go, go, go. Our lift has not turned up, could they have possibly forgotten???? A quick phone call confirms that yes they had and are now on there way. Climbing aboard a mini bus we can see it's going to be a tight squeeze. All our luggage has to come to as we will be moving onto our next country after the cruise (Oh so Squeeze!!!!!). We have finally arrived at Halong Bay port, all the junks are either returning from an overnight cruise or reloading with new travellers. The weather has not improved that ... read more

It"s 11:45 pm touch down at Hanoi Airport, so very deserted as we are the last flight in for the night. Our hotel transfer is surpose to be waiting for us, but is no where to be found. An airport security personal comes to our aid, he promptly rings the hotel, telling them to get someone to us pronto, eventually sleepy eyed taxii driver turns up finally. The temperture has dropped, a slight coldness in the air, damp roads and the streets are quite. After checking into our room, its straight to bed. The beds have been a interesting mix of hard, harder and concrete hard with the odd coil spring bed that is more like sleeping on raw wire coils. Most of the time we are so tired that all of the above are gratefully ... read more
