| 19th October 2009 Everette | Response - From: Excitement on the Train to Warsaw We agree 100% with you about Poland. Walt commented that he could not understand why there are Polish jokes. After going there, we have gread admiration for the people. You will love Croatia. The Dalmation Coast is beautiful. We have been to Sicily four times. Be careful Sicily. Keep your doors locked if you rent a car. Always be on guard with your belongings. |

IT IS NOT ON OUR BUCKET LIST AT THE PRESENT TIME. WE ARE PLANNING A TRIP TO CROTIA IN MAY AND LEAVE FOR SICILY THE 30TH OF THIS MONTH. | 16th October 2009 Everette | trip - From: Odesa/Odessa/Odecca, Ukraine Yvonne, We are currently in Vilnius. We will be traveling to Riga on Sunday. After Riga, we will come home. It feels like it is in the high 30s today. It is raining and that makes it feel colder. We are just now beginning to get the urge to go home. I am glad that we didn make the trip longer. I wouldn encourage anyone to come to Poland, Lithuania, or Latvia after Oct. 10th. I hope things are going well with AFM. E |
| 15th October 2009 Jeff J. | money for Ukraine - From: Odesa/Odessa/Odecca, Ukraine Everrete, thank you very much for your help! It means a great deal to me and I appreciate. I will take your information under advisement. The young lady I am visiting in Poltava told me to be careful in Odessa as she calls it a "gangster city". I take your comments about the med student and the 2 young ladies seriously as well. Thank you again for your help. Be well and safe, Jeff |

| 14th October 2009 Yvonne | WOW! - From: Excitement on the Train to Warsaw Can't believe you are really doing all that, Everette! How much of that snow and cold and unfriendliness can a person handle? I know the buildings are impressive and lovely but after a short time they would loose their charm for me. Are you ever coming home? |
| 14th October 2009 Everette | money for Ukraine - From: Odesa/Odessa/Odecca, Ukraine Jeff, it is hard to tell you exactly how much money you will need. We had paid for some of our accomodations in advance. I think between $1500 and 2000 will be enough. |
| 13th October 2009 Jeff | Ukraine currency exchange - From: Odesa/Odessa/Odecca, Ukraine Thank you for your response Everette. This is actually the first time I have been on a blog. Your comments about currency and travelers checks Have me a bit concerned. How much cash should I take for a two week trip if they don't accept trevelers checks, visa, debit etc??? All my travel and lodging is paid for except for internal travel to Poltava. I plan to have very good meals in very good restaurants and buy gifts. Is $3,000.00 US reasonable, too much, too little???? This is my first trip abroad and I leave on Thursday. HELP....thanks, jeff |

| 10th October 2009 Everette | reponse - From: Odesa/Odessa/Odecca, Ukraine Jeff, I would not bring any traveler's checks to Ukraine. We have encountered places that would not take Visa cards. I have not seen any signs for American Express cards. We try to just use cash. If you don't have a money belt or money wallet, buy one. I personally would not rent a car. You can travel between cities by marshrutka (minivans.) In Odessa, the bus and train stations are within one block of each other. We have ridden marshrutkas, buses, trains, and airplanes since getting to Eastern Europe. Don't worry about exchanging money. The rates are posted on signs by the exchange shops. We have not been cheated at any of them. I would suggest that you go on-line to a currency website. Write down the rate for the Ukraine Hryvnia. It has dropped since we have been here. Currently it is $1 US is equal to 8.4 UK hryvnia. Do you need a place to stay the night that you arrive in Odessa? Be careful! I met a young American male today who has arrive in Kiev to attend medical school. Two girls slipped a drug in his drink last night. He passed out and woke up in the hospital. All of his money and credit cards were missing. Good luck! Everette |

| 7th October 2009 jeff | Ukraine Currency - From: Odesa/Odessa/Odecca, Ukraine Hi and thanks for your blog. I am traveling to Odessa next week then traveling north to Poltava for another week to meet a couple girls I have been communicating with. I have two concerns. First is currency exchange and the second is car rental. I need to find out what a reasonable amount of cash (US) is to take with me and what I should take in traveler’s checks. How about using debit cards, visa and MasterCard?? Also, I plan to rent a car in Odessa and drive to Poltava. I am aware of the police and how they pull people over looking for bribes but what about actually pulling this off. I have maps and plan to get a GPS equipped vehicle. The bottom line is that I don't want to spend forever on a train or bus and want to travel and stop at my leisure. I would love to know your experience on these issues and would appreciate any help you can give. Thanks, Jeff J. California |

| 22nd April 2009 Everette | Children in Guatemala - From: Historic Granada I knew that before I went there. In one case, I asked a mother if I could take a photo of her daughter. She was excited and wanted me to do so. The grandfather was very displeased and scowled at me. I showed the photo to the mom and then took one of the family. She loved getting to see the pictures. They have had riots in Guatemala where 500 people have gone after Americans were trying to kidnap local children. In one case, two men were fishing and just trying to be friendly with some children on the bank. We kept our distance from children and did not encourage them to hang around us. |
| 21st April 2009 Carley | Breakfast sounds good.. - From: Historic Granada Everette, It sounds like you are finally in a more relaxing spot. A friend of mine from school has a sister who is a nun living in Guatemala, and she said that often locals in Guatemala think that Americans come down to take their children. You and Walt are beyond brave! |

| 21st January 2009 Lynharris | Sheep Skin Factory - From: New Zealand We lived in NZ for six NZ summers--we don't do snow anymore. We always went to the sheepskin factory. I found it was cheaper to mail something home than to pay the GST. I had an 8 skin cover sent home I'm still using on my bed. It was waiting for me when I got home. We lived in our RV and stayed in the park in Hastings behind the race track. You can take your folding chair and drink and watch the "gallops" from the backside. I always liked to sit a few feet back in case one of the horses came through the fence. Enjoy your trip. Lyn |

| 30th January 2008 Mary Beth | =( - From: Ready for Some Good Luck! I am so sorry to hear about all of your troubles! Whew, I know that you'll be glad to come home to the hum drum daily life instead of having to deal with International Police and Airports. Take care & I hope that you'll be able to enjoy something left of your vacation! |
| 24th January 2008 Mary Beth | It happens to everybody sometime! - From: Robbed in Santiago Unfortunately it happened to me in Santiago as well, about a year ago! I had my purse snatched near Plaza Italia. My roommate, who was Chilean, told me that she had had her purse snatched a couple of times in Santiago as well. I'm so sorry to hear about it, and I hope that it hasn't ruined your trip or thoughts of Chile. I still love Chile, even with all the mishaps. |
| 23rd January 2008 james st. james | crime and punishment - From: Robbed in Santiago i'm really sorry you got robbed in chile. chile does not have a lot of crime and is in fact the safest country in latin america. to be clearer, it does not have a lot of the types of crime (violent crime, assault, murder, kidnappings) and corruption that the rest of the continent has. however, as you found out the hard way, what it does have a lot of is petty theft (opportunistic swipings of purses and wallets, as well as pickpocketing). chileans themselves are often on the defensive in crowded areas, especially downtown, and even the starbucks has special chairs where you can literally hook your purse so a passerby can't just snatch it and run. there's no need to be paranoid, but don't do silly things with your wallet like leave it on a counter when paying or carry it in your back pocket. also, don't put money away while walking down the street, do that in the shop. i had a similar thing happen to me in europe so this could have happened in any big city. i hope the rest of your trip goes well. coming home with one robbery story is enough. cheers! |
| 23rd January 2008 karen Ray | Pickpockets - From: Robbed in Santiago Ouch! So sorry to hear you guys were the victims of theft in South America. Reminds Eric and I of living in Lima, where everyone at the embassy had a theft story to tell. Be safe, enjoy yourselves. Where to next? |
| 21st January 2008 Sandy | - From: Vina del Mar, Chile Everette, you are the BEST at detailing your travels. I really enjoy everything you put on your blogs. | 17th January 2008 Everette | South America - From: Ushuaia, Argentina Hi Guys! It has been pretty exciting to go to places that I taught about. | 17th January 2008 Everette | Yerba Mate - From: Buenos Aires You are both braver than me. The drink looks like it has grass floating on top of it. Do you want me to try to buy some to bring home for you? MB, thanks for sending the names of good Chilean dishes. I hope to try several when we get to Santiago. | 9th January 2008 Karen Ray | The rats - From: Tango City Everette, Your "incident" reminds me of Lima, except the street people, if not selling Chiclets or cell phone covers, were trying to steal a purse from the car. | 4th January 2008 Karen Ray | Lima, our former home - From: Starting Point Hi Everette, I wish we had known you were going to Lima. We would have had our "adopted daughter" Amabel meet your plane and take care of you. She worked for us when we lived in Lima, and was my "right hand". Mira Flores was our favorite area of Lima... the surf, the great shopping and hotels. Keep a sharp eye on all of your belongings when traversing the Lima Airport; everyone at the embassy had a theft story to tell when we lived there. Enjoy your trip, and travel safely. K Ray |

| 24th August 2007 Everette | Dirty Laundry - From: Pristina, Kosovo We send the laundry out sometimes and others times we wash. A lot of our clothes will dry overnight. Keep the fascinating info coming! You are providing great travel insight to your readers. Be safe! |

| 19th August 2007 Everette | Smuggling - From: Timisoara, Romania Everette forgot to say that the perp wiped his fingerprints cleaned from everything that he touched. Oh well, we will be out of Serbia tomorrow, but they may have long arms that reach west. Walt |

| 14th November 2006 Everette | Coming Home - From: Our Day in China Annette, We are currently at the Hong Kong Airport and will be leaving later this afternoon. We plan to spend one night in San Francisco and then head home. E |
| 14th November 2006 Melissa | Spies - From: Hot, hot, hot Myanmar I've never been to Burma, but have read much about it. The military junta commits many egregious crimes against its people, and are also extremely paranoid. Foreigners, especially Americans, are always followed. And the country's citizens place themselves in grave danger if they tell foreigners anything negative about the country. |
| 14th November 2006 Annette | Hello - From: Our Day in China When are you guys headed back? I am tired just reading your adventures. |
| 12th November 2006 Gail | football - From: The Island of Macau My heart goes out to Caroline with the death of her boss.GA beat Auvurn and LSU beat AL,JSU beat Sanford. Thunderstorms predicted for Wed.See ya' then. |

| 4th November 2006 Everette | Stuffing My Suitcase - From: Bangkok- City of Temples Long ago, I threw away a bunch of clothes and transferred all of our clothes to one suitcase. I filled the 2nd suitcase and a duffle bag with things that I had bought. I am either going to have to buy another suitcase or stop purchasing merchandise. You cannot imagine how heavy our bags are. Lucky for me, they roll. I am still saying a prayer everyday for Bobby. I will be glad when he gets home from Iraq. I can't imagine how much you must worry about him. |
| 4th November 2006 Sandy Plummer | History teacher - From: River Kwai - Thailand Everette, you make a very good history teacher. I feel like I'm there with you. Tom and I have really enjoyed your blog. |
| 4th November 2006 Everette | Sri Lanka - From: Sri Lanka The countryside is suppose to be beautiful. Leopards and elephants still roam in the jungle areas. It is just not safe to travel in some of those areas at the current time. I was unable to take many pictures while I was in Sri Lanka for 2 reasons. The police will not allow photos in many areas. Second, my camera batteries went dead and my Asian charger would not work with their plugs/or adaptors. |
| 2nd November 2006 Annette | A shame - From: Sri Lanka Wow, what a shame. A friend of mine was telling me how beautiful and wonderful it was when they went many years ago. |
| 2nd November 2006 Mary Kay | Bangkok - From: Bangkok- City of Temples We, too, were impressed with the respect that people have for their King and Queen. Glad you are enjoying one of our favorite cities, as well. Siem Reap will be quite an adventure. Enjoy! |
| 2nd November 2006 Sandy Plummer | - From: Bangkok- City of Temples Everette, I'm so glad that I'm on your blog list as I'll never see all of these places and you're doing such a great job of describing your experiences that I feel like I'm there. What a fun time for you and Walt. Don't hold back; buy, buy, buy all of the stuff you can get into a suitcase. This is your chance. |
| 1st November 2006 Shammie | About terrorism - From: Sri Lanka I have red you r blog. I am Sri Lankan. Actually long time we are facing this problem. No one couldn’t settle this. Several SL governments tried to finish this problem. But LTTL carders are not giving any chance to do it. We will finish this situation soon. Don’t worry. After that comes again to visit my poor country. |
| 31st October 2006 Dave Boozer | Great Trip - From: Sizzling Singapore What a wonderful trip. |
| 30th October 2006 Annette | Miles and miles in a few blogs - From: Sizzling Singapore Hello! I have missed checking your blog for a few days and it has been fun catching up this morning. It is amazing to hear the differences and miles and miles between journal entries. I completely related to your description when leaving the airport in Delhi. When we landed there many years ago I thought I was going to have a heart attack knowing that we were in India for 3 weeks, but when we got outside the big cities and traveled around I really changed my opinion. Take care! Annette |
| 30th October 2006 Mary Kay | Pictures - From: Sizzling Singapore I have been enjoying the pictures-thanks! What a kick to drink a Singapore Sling in the place where it was created! We were there in Feb. of 2005..you are right about the heat and humidity. Happy adventures! |
| 28th October 2006 Judy Headrick | love reading your log - From: Correction HI E & Walt, I have really enjoyed reading your log about the time I think I might be getting caught up Franklin comes in and says his famous words I"m hungry where are we going to eat" so I have to stop in the middle of reading them. Hopeful I can remember the date I got to so I can come back later and start all over again. School work is like Robin H. said earlier can't ever seem to catch up. Keep posting the logs I love reading them. |
| 26th October 2006 Everette | Wild Boar - From: Gifu Castle R, We tried wild boar in Nepal along with dried venison. Both were very tasty. I have had several good fish dishes but have been unsure what kind of fish I was eating. Often the name is in another language. I have liked many of the Asian dishes but did not care for the Indian food. It was very strong in flavor. I don't particularly care for vegetables for breakfast. They always serve soggy bacon or chicken sausage which looks like vienna sausage. The breads have been great in every country. I am glad that you had a good trip to France. E |
| 25th October 2006 Robin | Food Choices - From: Gifu Castle E, I know what you mean! The first night we were in France, the group met for dinner at a very nice restaurant in Cannes where we were served a beautiful fresh green salad followed by a meat that looked like chicken. We asked what it was but were told it was SOMETHING LIKE CHICKEN. We were never told exactly what it was but think it was pheasant, very tasty but some would not try it.I also saw rabbit on many menus and the whole thing dead in the market in Avignon. Boar is big there too. When in Rome, do as the Romans do is my theory. I would try ALMOST everything. Robin |
| 25th October 2006 Robin | Love your Travel News - From: Moving On E, I have just returned from fabulous southern France. Am catching up on everything including your blogs,so interesting. No news here other than Todd Starling and wife bought Nancy Lee's house. Moving here for his job. Saw Carolyn last nite at a program in Roanoke which Steve's students put on. Kathy directed the music. I'm still recovering from jet lag! I know why you have to stop for r&r. Traveling can be tiring. Wait until you see my pixs! Know you will have many too. Robin |

| 24th October 2006 Mike L | - From: Hong Kong/Japan Walt, Sorry I didn't warn you about the shopping in HK; you're probably going to need your FedEx account to ship all the jade (and other items) back. Glad you two are having a great time. Mike |

| 24th October 2006 Mary Kay | Hi, there! - From: Kathmandu What great expereiences you are having. That is one place we did not get to but we met some trekkers in Australia, one an Israeli soldier who had taken a year off to do some of these things. They had all trekked in Nepal and said what an experiece it was. The view from the plane must have been incredible! Be safe! |
| 22nd October 2006 Mary Kay | WOW-the Taj Mahal - From: New Delhi, India What a great experience to be able to visit one of the Seven Wonders of the World! It was the highlight of our India trip. However, after 10 days in the country, we came to the same conclusion you did almost immediately. Although we would never go back, we had some of our most memorable experiences in India. Be safe! |
| 21st October 2006 Everette | Bali - From: Correction I bought Adam and LISA t-shirts in Bali. I don't have a lot of room in my suitcase at this time. Toward the end of the trip, we are going to pack a bag of souvenirs. That will probably while we are in Thailand and later Hong Kong. WE each only have one small suitcase and they are very heavy. Thanks for writing. I enjoy hearing from you. I don't always have enough time to respond. Bali is very inexpensive. It is the cost of the flight over that gets your attention. E |
| 21st October 2006 Everette | Taipei Restaurant - From: Lots of Walking I a posting a picture today of the restaurant owner and my husband. I believe she is too young to be your aunt. We stayed downtown next to the Asia World Mall & Ikea at the Sunworld Dynasty Hotel. I hope we can meet someday. We enjoyed our time in Taipei. I am glad that you are reading the blog. Everette |
| 20th October 2006 Kelli | I'm from Taiwan! - From: Lots of Walking Guess what? My friend, Judy Freeney, showed me your blog and it's unbelievable that the area you walked through happened to be the area that my uncle and aunt's restaurant is. I wonder if you actually went to that one.. Just kidding. Anyway, nice to know that you enjoy the long walk. Judy said she'll blog you later now. She's living vicariously through you. Enjoy your trip and hopfully I"ll get to talk to you in the future. |
| 20th October 2006 Annette | Rupees - From: Correction Hi! I remember when we were in India the rupee was really confusing for US dollar conversion, but really easy for the Belgian Franc (I was living in BE at the time). Unfortunately, I was still getting used to the Franc, so I was totally confused much to the delight of several street vendors! I can't wait until you can get to a link that will let you upload some pics! Take care! |

| 18th October 2006 Susan Tipton | - From: Lots of Walking Love reading about all of your travels. You make it seem as if I were there with you. Thanks for including me in your travels. Can't believe the owners of the restaurant had to go to the market to buy what you wanted after you placed your order. How long did it take for you to get your prepared meal? |
| 18th October 2006 Annette, Adam & Lisa | Hi - From: Lots of Walking Hi Everette! It sounds like you guys are doing a lot of walking! It seems you are getting a good flavor for the places you are visiting. I can't get over how little your meal was at the small restaurant. I guess it could not get much fresher when they run out for ingredients after you order! We are looking forward to when you can upload more pics! You are missing warm and very rainy weather here. Take care! |

We have been catching up on your entries and are very excited to see some pictures, but we are not sure where the "gallery" is - can you help us? I am envious of sushi (in Japan) - yummy yummy. I remember all the currencies that I had to lug around before Europe went to the EURO. A bit of a pain. Adam says - Don't let your husband get diarrhea! Looking forward to more! Annette |
