Ethnic Travel - Rob_Ariette_Deanne

We are Rob, Ariette, and Deanne. Between the three of us, we have been almost all over the world. We are ethnically mixed and have interesting experiences that we want to share, especially if you are wondering how you might be treated in various countries and their cities. Obviously, we have had more good experiences than bad experiences. We want you to know how and where to have the best experiences. And just in case you want to know, we will let you know what to expect in places that aren't used to dark skinned people, or a dark-skinned person walking with a white-skinned person, or a person that they think is from their country, but are mistaken.

Hi folks: A funny thing happened when I was reading the Lonely Planet one time. In a European country book, the authors provided advice on how to "fit in" and "look like a local". They recommended things like not wearing a fanny pack, for example. I thought this was interesting because this particular European country had a paucity of dark-skinned people like me. So, fitting in wasn't an option. I thought to myself that as much as I love the Lonely Planet (located in Oakland, CA), they seemed to have forgotten that Asian, Black, and other people of color travel the [View Full Entry]

Entry from Rob: Heads up! I live and work in San Francisco. And so has Deanne. This city is definitely a point of destination for people from all over the world. People I meet often either want to go to New York or San Francisco. That's pretty cool. Of all of the cities in the United States, this city purposely and actively touts itself as inclusive and accepting of all people. It is supposed to be the place where the so-called American Dream can really happen. In many ways, this is so true. We have bicyclists who have a very strong [View Full Entry]

This is the first of dozens of blog entries our group of friends will make. If you are looking for a good place that is friendly to people of color and interracial couples like us, then Ios is a good place to go. I can't speak for Asians, who may have a different experience. I hope it is the same. Ios is a party town or island. There's nothing more to it than that. We went right before high season, so there wasn't a lot going on, but there was enough activity. Our experience as an interracial couple (Erin is white [View Full Entry]

From Rob: Deanne and I visited Spetses, Greece right after our trip to Mount Kilimanjaro via London and Barbados. The cool thing was that we incidentally learned about Athena Travel, which set up this very cheap trip for a Last-Minute deal (found all over London). We had to take a flight at around 3 a.m., then an early morning ferry to the island. But it was so worth it! Spetses was a fine place to visit. On the issue of race and ethnicity, it was an interesting experience. We noticed that little kids would blatantly point at us, simply because of [View Full Entry]

By Rob: When I left Thailand, I was nearly in tears because I knew I would miss it so much. Up to that point in my life and my limited travels, I had never been treated so normally. Back in the summer of 2000, Deanne and I (Rob) headed to Bangkok, Thailand for a trek. In Thailand, we met Ariette, whom we call a good associate or distant friend. Each of us had a unique experience. I hope that the other two share theirs. Anyway, the main thing that I learned in Thailand was that I was an American tourist first [View Full Entry]
