El Chalten is in Argentinas most beautiful region, Patagonia. It is a small village where everyone goes to trek the mountains there. The tallest mountain in the Andes (I think) is there... it is called Fitz Roy.. and you can see it as you approach, and everywhere it seems. Fitz Roy is a massive snow capped rocky peak and there are loads of other amazing mountains and glaciers in the national park all around it. We had a few days there and LOVED IT. We did a few day treks and a small one (only about an hour) close to the [View Full Entry]

* great pics coming soon! * We wanted to get to this amazing national park for much longer and do 'the W trek' - a 5 day trek through the park, weaving in, out and around the massive mountain peaks which are part of The Andes on the Chilean side of the border. However, it didnt happen due to time and equipment and whatever else. But instead we went there for 2 days from El Calafate which turned out to be rushed, but enough. It was really expensive!! We had grand designs of roughing it in the Refugio las Torres (base [View Full Entry]

* great pics coming soon! * Perito Moreno Glaciar, Argentina This is the most active glaciar in the World. It is one of only 3 Patagonian glaciars which is not retreating. Its about 5km wide with an average height of 60 metres above the surface of the water with a total ice depth of 170 metres. And at its deepest it is 700 metres! Apparently it ruptures all the time because it acts like a plug, or a blockage, between two lakes which causes enormous pressure build-up. But enough of the statistics! We saw a few chunks falling off but some [View Full Entry]

I wont go on about it, but let me put it this way: Who in their right minds would pay through the nose for, and put up with • 40 hours sat still in one position on a bus with nothing to look at except an unchanging scenery of flat plains and wasteland • Really sh*t food that is few and far between, no water or drinks • Crap DVDs in every and any other language but English, with no English subtitles • Loud gay music in Spanish • Sitting next to the fuel cap which leaked and almost poisoned you [View Full Entry]

Colonia in Uruguay is just a 1 hour boat ride away from Buenos Aires and it is gorgeous. We went there to kill some time while we waited for James´new bank card which was supposed to be arriving at our hostel in Buenos Aires (BA) following the theft etc which happened in Brazil. The distraction turned out to be a gorgeous little village, the old town full of big, leafy, tree-lined avenues with cobble stones and quaint, old buildings. We came for 2 and stayed for 5 days, just chilling out really. Everyone seems really social there and hangs about together [View Full Entry]

Give me a minute while I catch my breath. Oh. My. God. This place is the most amazing, jaw-dropping, awe inspiring sight I have EVER SEEN. The Iguazu Falls are on the border of Brazil and Argentina and are 275 waterfalls over 2.7km of the Iguazu River. Some of them are up to 82 metres high. And the water, so much water, comes tumbling over the edge of them like a leap of faith. Try keeping sight of your pooh sticks on these ones! Legend has it that a god planned to marry a beautiful aborigine named Naipí, who fled with [View Full Entry]

We went straight out of Santarem up another river, one of the amazons many tributaries to a place called Alter do Chao which was recommended to us by the hostel in Manaus. The Bible (Lonely Planet) (or, as we have found, it is better called "the book which must be ignored") calls it one of the best beaches in South America. Actually, it was on the right track this time, it was amazing. We shared a taxi with Grant and Rachel who were a great couple who´m I´m sure we will bump into again at some point, they were just taking [View Full Entry]
