So I'm going to be honest. Today was the first birthday where at 12:01AM the first thing that came out of my mouth was "damn... I'm getting old." .... Anyway I'm off to Barcelona for a 36 hour trip to meet up with an old friend from high school in a random part of the world on a 16EURO plane ticket. Kindda crazy! Blog update later, I promise! p.s. thank you to everyone for the birthday wishes. Et bonjour Derek--I didn't know you read my blog!... read more

So it appears that I have been absent for a while. Let me fill you in a little on what I’ve been up to. Let’s start with the most fun part. Last week I went to Italy to visit my darling parental units. Stupidly I chose to fly out of Paris on the day of the grève. Grèves (commonly known as strikes) occur often in France, but this one was supposedly particularly bad as all the transportation unions in the country were staging a strike on the same day. This basically means that in Paris, none of the buses or the metros or the RER (suburban trains) were running, however, business is as usual. The whole of Paris just walks to work, or borrows their kid’s scooter, or puts on a jogging suit and gets up ... read more

I will write more about my internship at a later day, but I thought I'd just fill ya'll in on the biggest news in Paris. LES BLEUS beat the ALL BLACKS! Do you even know what that means? Well... I learned this weekend. Apparently, Rugby has become quite popular around these parts, especially given that the Coupe du Monde is taking place (mostly) in Paris. There is a huge TV set up outside the Hôtel de Ville (center of government) in the middle of Paris with areas to sit (including alcohol checks.. odd.. it just encourages people to stand around the perimeter drinking beers until they decide to jump the fence to sit and watch)... but everyone who isn't there goes to a bar and watches. On Saturday my friends and I decided we should do ... read more

Yes, I understand, you wanna hear about Germany, but I've spent the past two days freaking out about le début de mon stage (which was today)!! I'll write a little bit about Germany, then maybe add a little extra later. Stephanie and I took a train Monday morning from Prague to Berlin which was a good 5 hours long, even though we got off a stop or two early on the wrong side of Berlin and had to navigate the U-Bahn and S-Bahn to our hostel. Once we made it there, and waited 15 minutes for Mr. Schultz, the owner of the hostel, we were so happy with our (my!) choice. We had a private three-person room with comfy beds and towels and a bathroom (it was nice, even though we had to share it with ... read more

I'M BACK! As previously mentioned, I spent this past week traveling around Prague and Berlin. Let's start off with Prague, since that's where we went first. Stephanie and I got up super early to catch a 8:30am flight out of Charles de Gaulle on Smartwings and arrived in beautiful Prague after having to navigate their train system, getting screwed out of 30 CZH (we think), trying to determine the conversation rate that neither of us had thought to look up, figuring out how much CZH we might need for two days, then wandering around in circles trying to find the hostel. The hostel was a hostel. Not great at all, but it had internet access, free (gross) breakfast, cute reception boys, and a "bed." We shared a room with 2 sweedish boys and a sweedish girl, ... read more

Sorry about this, but I'm leaving for a week for Prague and Berin... but I promise to update when I return with plenty of pictures. Although this is the least planned trip I've ever gone on (ok, that's a lie... the time when I was supposed to referee at 8am Saturday morning, and discovered at 3am Friday morning that I hadn't actually bought a ticket back to Virginia might have been a little worse), I'm really excited. I ran out to get some travel guides today and both cities look beautiful! Plus, the girl I'm going with, Stephanie, even suggested that we go running together which is perfect (especially given I have to wake up at 4:30am tomorrow morning and I was planning on going running tonight at 10:30pm as I didn't think I would be ... read more

This week was a little different from the rest as we had all our normal afternoon classes cancelled and replaced with field trips and movies and such. Monday, we were introduced to our wonderfully gay and highly energetic art history professor who was our first non professor teacher. He had us was "Le Roi Danse", an amazing film about the life of Louis XIV and how he made Paris a center of art and culture... highly recommended (stop complaining, I know it's in French but you can add subtitles!). After class on Monday, I had my interview for my internship. I was so nervous going into it as I'm only used to American style interviews where they grill you and analyze every little story you tell to try to paint yourself in a wonderful shining light. ... read more

So I said that my friends and I were going to rent bikes and go and ride around the Châteaux in the Loire Valley. And that is precisely what we did this weekend! We started our three day weekend with a wonderful group bonding session at one of our friend’s apartment’s (she’s an art major, so I’m not sure a French family would want her erecting a floor to ceiling set up for painting art!) to cook dinner. A few people cooked us really yummy pasta and mixed vegetable sauce, and then we had nutella crêpes! We’re thinking of making this a weekly event, with different people cooking different things each week… the catch… most people are either vegetarian or vegan (one girl is even allergic to whatever is in flour, but we sort of decided ... read more

September 5th 2007

So I thought I'd add another quick update as a certain Ms. Spanier seemed upset that I hadn't updated much lately... although this is going to be quick as it's almost midnight and I was supposed to be asleep by 9pm owing to lack of sleep recently, but there were certain domestic issues that had to be delt with first. To begin with, I made dinner! Look... pretty picture to prove I can COOK! All by myself! Oh, and I did laundry! Apparently the machines take 2 hours just to wash the clothes here, but I'm lucky enough to actually have a machine in the apartment I'm living in, although no dryer, so I have wet clothes hanging all around me right now! But be proud... it only took me 2.5 weeks to do laundry! Our ... read more

SUPER LONG ENTRY

Well, I was thinking about beginning this entry with an apology for not having updated in the past week, but then I starting thinking... no one has complained, or even commented on this factor, so maybe no one reads this blog anyway! So no appology for you! What have I been up to anyway? Well, basically classes started and the work never stopped. I had a 10 minute oral presentation last Wednesday on a new article, so I talked about the US Subprime crisis... don't ask why, but it was in the papers a lot over here and I figured it would be something I should get myself educated about before my internship (private equity firm) begins in 3 weeks! Monday and Tuesday nights were spent preparing for that, and then Thursday I had to present ... read more
