We awoke to our alarm at 5am, packed our bags and jumped on the MRT around 6am in order to get to the airport in time for our flight. The airport was surprisingly simple to follow and before to long we were checked in and our bags were on their way to the aircraft!! After the excitement of the zoo, we decided to spend a bit of time (the 2 days we had left here) exploring the city itself. After leaving the hostel and having breakfast, we headed to the conveniently located MRT station across the road from our hostel and headed to the Harbour Front, not too sure of what we were going to do but we'd read about a lot of different things. We had heard lots of good reports from fellow travellers about Singapore Zoo and decided to dedicate a day to it. We weren't disappointed in the slightest!! We caught the MRT to a station near the Kranji War memorial, where the name of my grandfathers brother was engraved in memory of this loss during the war. As we exited the railway station, the heavens opened. There was no shelter close by, so we darted for the nearest bus stance. We caught a taxi from our hotel in Kuala Lumpur to the bus station to ensure that we arrived in plenty of time for the bus to Singapore. However we could probably have walked it 3 times over by the time the bus pulled out of the station. The buses were luxurious, big seats with lots of leg room even for Gary!! The journey included the usual stop at a service station for refreshments, however as we got back on board the bus, our driver informed us that we would have to change buses. So, this was it for Thailand. We were leaving the country for good and pretty much on our way out of South-East Asia in general. Being used to such cheap prices, we were going to have to readjust for the economy increase, although our next country, Malaysia, was still on the cheap side. Our flight out of Asia was from Singapore and a lot of backpackers on the South-East Asia trail generally just fly to there from Bangkok, unless they're going to travel in Malaysia itself. Just across the waters from Phuket Island lies the islands of Koh Phi Phi. It only consists of two islands, although it is just Koh Phi Phi Don that is inhabited and that was where we were heading for our next, and last, Thai island visit. We had heard great things about this place and we weren't to be disappointed in the slightest. The boat trip from the pier at Phuket was the standard hour and a half that we had come to expect in Thailand. Arriving in Phuket after a very long bus journey we were greeted with many local taxi drivers fighting for our custom (as always)!! We had decided that we were going to stay in Phuket Town as the beaches were really expensive and the local bus to the beach had stopped for the night, so we politely declined and walked. It ended up being a fairly intensive walking session which isn't that comfortable loaded with heavy backpacks! Something weird did happen though. The next stop of our island hopping tour was Koh Samui, the most famous Thai island on the eastern side. It's also the biggest and the most commercialised, with most things firmly aimed at Westerners and specifically, package holiday tourists. We may not have been package tourists, but we were looking forward to the relaxation all the same. Our boat from Koh Tao to Koh Samui was at 3pm so that allowed us some sleep time in the morning, until I realised our check out time was at the ungodly hour of 10am. (We don't have any dive pictures unfortunately due to underwater photography being part of an advanced diving course and for safety reasons we apparantly couldn't bring our normal cameras with us. We're still debating whether to order the DVD that a videographer did of us from the website, but it was very expensive. At least we get the certificate!) The boat journey was OK, although Gary did not get the few hours sleep that he had wanted, due to the very uncomfortable seats and the freezing temperatures of the boat. After an hour or so we decided to venture outside onto the deck and stand in the heat as neither of us could stand the cold any longer.
