Afew weeks ago, I realized that I did not have any plans for the weekend. I, at that point, decided to go to a random nearby town for the day. I wasn’t sure which one I wanted to go to but I thought of Porvoo. When I asked my flatmate if she was doing anything Saturday, to ask if she wanted to join me, she said that she and her friends were going to Porvoo! Talk about coincidences! So I joined them for the day. This adventure was a bit different from the rest, in that I was surrounded by Dutch language instead of the common Polish or Finnish that I hear often. It was a nice change. There were 6 of us and 4 out of the 6 spoke Dutch. We took the 10am ... read more
The third and final full day in Lapland, I again saw how magical the Arctic Circle can be. I thought the magic ended with being in two different places at once, but I was wrong. This time, we found a portal that took us to another world! Narnia! (Ok so, we were really in a national park - but it really did feel like Narnia) Before we ventured out, we checked in at the national forest office to see what trails, if any, we could go on. We were told that we would need either snowshoes or skis to get to most paths, but there was one that we could go on without the shoes or skis. We were told, however, that there was an avalanche pass that we would have to be careful as ... read more
As promised, here is more about my trip to Lapland. The next day we woke up early, vacations are never meant for sleeping in - you end up missing too much! After breakfast we headed out to a winter park - translated as snow nose land from Finnish. They had a snow labyrinth, reindeer rides, snowmobiles to ride on, and dog rides too. They also had different hills to go sledding on. However, before we got there we were walking and saw a reindeer just wondering down the road! It was a beautiful white one too. One of the guys we were with decided to run after him to get a picture…And in the process ended up falling into the snow! But in the end, he got a good picture. So it was worth it ... read more
A little over a week ago - four friends and I traveled up north to Lapland - past the Arctic Circle. Out of the 5 of us, I was the only one who did not speak polish too! I come to Finland and constantly find myself surrounded by polish people! I keep thinking that I need to start learning Polish! Our flight left at 5 30 in the morning - too early for buses! But, since there were 4 of us, the taxi was pretty cheep. The 5th person was taking another flight from the rest of us. We flew into Rovaniemi and headed to the city center. Our destination - the northest McDonalds in the world (also the official McDonalds of Santa Claus)! Although - it was closed! Yes - it was too early in ... read more
Hello again! I know that I have not been very good at keeping this updated - but at least I have some posts on here! And yes, the country is correct. I little over a week ago I went to Ireland. Why? Well, here are a few reasons that I thought up - you can chose which one you like or which one you think is right and let me know. Or you can suggest your own ideas! 1 - I was talking with some people about where they have been since being here and realizing that I have been hardly anywhere, I went home and bought the cheapest ticket that I found. 2 - I realized that once again, I had no date for the dreaded V Day - so instead of wallowing in self ... read more
It has certainly been a while since I have blogged last. I hope that now I will be able to catch you up on what I have been doing. I will start first with what I am actually doing here. The main purpose is for me to do my internship. I have met with two different professors here about that matter. The first one is someone who I have been in contact with ever since I started thinking about coming here. The other professor is my supervisor for my internship. I will be in contact with her about where I am doing it at, as well as how it is going for me. After meeting with both of them, I still do not know where I will do my internship. I meet with my supervisor ... read more
So it’s now Monday - and it took me about 3 days to send a first blog entry out there about me arriving here! I am only a day late for sending an update about the weekend. I guess I am catching up! Saturday - All I really wanted to do was to stay in my flat - but I ended up going out with my roommate, Sandra, and a friend of hers from Germany, Suzie. We really did not have an agenda - So it was a fun day of wandering around and finding out where we would end up. We walked down to the Senate Square and saw the Lutheran Cathedral. It’s a huge Church. We did not end up going inside of it - perhaps another day. From the Square, we walked down ... read more
I have finally arrived in Finland!!! I actually have been here for 2 full days now! I have kept myself very busy, hence me not getting this done earlier. I arrived Thursday Evening and was picked up by my Tutor Heli (here a tutor is someone who helps international students around the city and stuff like that) She has ended up becoming my life savor! She took me to my flat and showed me around a bit. We were going to meet the next day at 9am, in front of my building. I ended up going to bed early that night, it was a long day! I woke up at 9:30 and started to panic! I over slept by a half hour! I ran down stairs a quickly as I could - only to find that ... read more
