Embracing the Nation with Pez

I'm a witty and fun loving native New Yorker, who for the first time will be traveling around North America and back on the Amtrak train solo.. I will be visiting old friends and hopefully make new ones along with discovering different cities and embracing their own cultures. Take a ride with me where we will see the Northeast side and work our way to South West Florida and then to Old Savannah and Atlanta Georgia, up to Chicago and out through the mid west of Montana, then along the Pacific coast of Portland Oregon to California, then South West and over to New Orleans.....

Trails And Tails With Keith Bear After a moving evening at “Deep Table” I awoke by the screeches of people’s enthusiasm of seeing a Moose drink out of a lake. It was actually a nice surprise considering that I have never seen a Moose before in my life! After being in the concrete jungle for so long you forget what actual species look like except for rodents and roaches which are really growing into quite bigger sizes these days. We were at the tail end of North Dakota reaching the border of Montana and still an eternity to get to West Glacier. In spite of it all the travel and delay time it really did not bother me. In some crazy way I was actually starting to like living and traveling on the train. For a ... read more

” The Empire Builder” After my wonderful experience in Chicago I was once again saddened that I had to leave. I don’t know why I was creating this type of pattern. Perhaps because there was so much to see and I wasn’t giving myself enough of a time frame and therefor I felt I was missing out? Or was it the news I heard about my poor friend Kristi’s daughter Kennedy who had a seizure the night before, which gave me a real scare considering I just left her 2 weeks prior. I must admit that I was very close of not getting on the train that day and making my way back down to Cape Coral just to be there for support, but Kristi being the rock she is, told me she was fine and ... read more

The Welcome Inn Manor Bed & Breakfast Michigan Ave, Chicago…. The following morning I must have woken about 6:30am. We were scheduled to arrive in Chicago at 8:45am so I decided to get freshened up and get some coffee. It was a going to be a bright beautiful day not a cloud insight and from what the conductors revealed that the temperature was going up to about 90! As the train pulled into the station I gathered my things and said goodbye to Cecilia and made my way down the stairs of the double decker, picked up my luggage from baggage claim train and walked about into the city of Chitown solo and “virgin” sort of speak to the second city! I decided to take a cab from the train station over to the bed and ... read more

As I was saying beforeWashington D.C reminded me a lot of New York City in a lot of ways with its similar architecture and volume of heavy commuters flowing through. There were variations of people of all cultures from travelers such as myself to the business working class boarding “U.S. Capital Train AKA “The Acela Express, which runs from D.C. to New York City in an hour and a half! Yes, seriously people!!!!! The high speed rail corridors of the Amtrak has been a part of a forty year plan in the making to increase annual ridership to 38 million people in the Northeast region and eventually nationwide. They are studying how to bring the next- generation of high speed rail which would provide increased speeds of 150 to 220 mph, quadruple hourly departures in the ... read more

There was always something about the city of Chicago, which always seemed to have interest me. I know all my life I always had been obsessed with the 1920’s and 30’s era. I was fascinated by the history of prohibition and the times of The Untouchables and excitement of the Blues and Jazz age. I love how it was a time when woman rebelled and went against their modern day rules by cutting their hair short and started being daring by wearing red lipstick and darkened their eyes by using Vaseline and cigarette ashes. I was always drawn to the fashion trends of those decades as well as the art deco type furniture that once furnished Chicago’s five star luxury hotels and homes. I was always drawn to the exquisite architecture of the Queen Ann style ... read more

The history of Savannah I must say is a captivating one. I enjoyed its splendor and its charm as well as their friendly and hospitable people. There are many things to do in Savannah and I definitely wanted to stay but I knew I had so much more to see! I know I will definitely will be back to visit with friends and family and make a weekend out of it one day. There are so many great places to stay and so much to see and do that it made me feel almost guilty for leaving it in such a rush. I had to get on my way to the bus station so Brian (from the hostel I was staying) called me cab. Unfortunately there wasn’t a direct route from Savannah to Atlanta on the ... read more

Old Historic Savannah Georgia I had to leave Fort Meyers Monday morning about 6:15am in order to catch the 7am Bus to Orlando and connect to the train going to Savannah, Georgia. Yes I know it sounds grueling and long but if I didn’t go along with this schedule one missed bus or train would throw a whole monkey wrench into it and it would end up being a disaster, and furthermore the place I was staying in Savannah didn’t check people in after a certain time either so I really didn’t want to be stranded alone late at night in the middle of an infamous haunted city! Kristi’s hubby Nate (or Saint Nate as I call him) gave me lift because the bus stop/area was on his way to work. I caught my bus ... read more

First Stop Fort Meyers, Cape Coral Florida The famous question that I have been getting since I started this jaunt was if I was going to feel lonely? I’m alone, but not alone, the most remarkable thing about this voyage was that I have friends spread out all over the country and each and every one of them has portrayed a very unique and special part in my life. Through the years from junior high school to living and working in the city, I have developed many different and distinctive friendships. Though some have stayed, others had moved weather it was for a better way of life or they went back to their own original hometowns, we had always kept in touch and thanks to technology and social networks reuniting and re-connecting ... read more

Introduction I heard a saying once that “strength to a man’s core is based through new experiences”, meaning if we try new things we start to develop a whole new pair of eyes to the world we see. It was a quote that has forever stayed with me, because it was straightforward, true as well as enlightening. I felt as if those words had hit home for me in every way, because by nature I have always had a sense for adventure and always felt the need to try new things just to learn from the experience in itself. Through the years, I have made my prerogative just that. I chose to be free spirited, liberal, open minded and most of all determined to fill the quest of my journey for ... read more
