| 20th July 2009 mom and dad | how do you measure a year? - From: How do you measure a year? For us the year was measured through your eyes, blogs, phone calls and emails. Through your ups and downs, successes and not... Your accomplishments, your realized dreams and attained goals. Our hearts are pounding with the anticipation of your arrival tomorrow. We are busting our buttons, so to speak with all that you have done, accomplished but more importantly with who you are. It seems that we sent away a boy and truly have a man returning. We know there is so much more to these 10 months than were written in your blog and we know what it took to work through the struggles and turn them into triumphs. Bravo to you, our son, Bravo! |
| 16th July 2009 Granpa | See ya on the 21st - From: Yasukuni Jinja Interesting, very interesting. One of the things you were particularly interested in finding out was WWII from their perspective. Guess you found some answers. |
| 16th July 2009 mom | Yasunkuni - From: Yasukuni Jinja We also visited the memorial while in Tokyo with your Host Father. Similar sentiments from him to us. The festival was being set up and it was a carnival like atmosphere. The yellow lanterns are not the names of the deceased soldiers, but rather the names and sentiments of those who come there to visit the loved ones buried there. As with the rest of what we saw in Japan, such a mix of the old and new. Almost as if Japan does not know where to fit in. Interesting. xox mom |
| 13th July 2009 grandma | Going away party - From: Going away party - fair trade style Emanuel I just finished reading your blog for the second time. | 2nd July 2009 mom | circle - From: My Circle this circle and your membership in it has contributed greatly to your blossoming in the Japanese culture. I am thrilled that you had the foresight to evaluate and join, regardless of the initial differences and difficulties with language, customs etc. Again, you made an excellent choice for yourself, and for them also. They have benefited greatly from you membership also. |

| 6th June 2009 mom | ramen - From: Ramen Fest ok, so it escapes me how they eat all of these carbs and greasy stuff and still remain stick thin. I will have to chose carefully, not as adventerous as my son. xo |

| 19th May 2009 Aunt Melissa | No Man is an Island - From: Egyptian Adventure I read an article recently about Japan continuing to be one of the few truly homogeneous populations remaining in the modern world. Sounds like you are experiencing both the wonder and the frustration of both sides of this coin. It is difficult to imagine as our culture is so diverse and heterogeneous - but a unique experience which will serve you well. Sending a kiss and a hug - "Mrs. Migliaccio". :) |

| 2nd February 2009 Auntie M | Beer - From: Tokyo Disneyworld and Yebisu Garden Place Hi Emanuel: Reading this during the SuperBowl and Uncle Mark wants you to know he loves a good Molson Canadian! Just back from New Hampshire from a great restaurant that had no less than 20 beers, some microbrews and regionals on tap. The North Country seems to have a strange affinity for homebrews and quality - when you get home I strongly recommend a trip to Maine, Vermont or New Hampshire. Keep smiling. |

| 26th December 2008 Tasche & Laurie | How very true! - From: Nothing is more American than... Hi Eman, This blog is so true about many Americans (unfortunately). When we travel, we can always tell who is from the USA and who is not. In a country as wonderful as ours, we (as its citizens) need to learn to be a little less obnoxious and a little more humble. Nothing is more embarrassing than to see (or just hear) a loud person who acts like he/she is entitled to everything. And so many Americans wonder why we're disliked so much around the world....... Arrogance and having little or no class are not welcome features in ANY culture! Fortunately, there are ambassadors from the U.S. like you, to show the world that there are many, many wonderful, respectful, classy, talented and caring Americans, too. Keep on doing your good work, and don't let those others get to you! We're very proud of you and are quite honored to know you and have you represent our country! Love, T & L |
