| 9th October 2006 Katy | - From: The big picture post Is that actually true about the cashews?! So odd how many English people you keep finding. They get everywhere! |
| 8th October 2006 Mike | Whatever!! - From: The big picture post No way is that where Cashews come from. You've just had too many cocktails. Glad its all going well. Make sure you have loads of space on your camera when you get to Iguacu, (i took about 150 pictures in two days). :) |
| 8th October 2006 jan | my email address - From: The big picture post just in case you don't have it -janimal@fastmail.fm |
| 8th October 2006 jan | join you? - From: The big picture post Hi Em Really love to hear your news and see the pics! How is the home front? Have you sorted the hastings flat? I am asking cos I'm thinking of booking for the Philippines and this would help me decide, as I'm sure you can understand. love Jan |
| 8th October 2006 sakirmo | - From: The big picture post I loved the tourist bus in Curitiba - well actually I loved all of Curitiba, it was so different from the rest of Brazil that I saw! And to me, Iguassu falls was probably the most amazing thing I've ever seen, I still can't believe the beauty of it all... |
| 7th October 2006 Katie | Wow! - From: The big picture post First I must say OMG at the opera house, it looks amazing! As does everything else. I never knew that about cashew nuts! How weird haha. And I also never knew there were so many different weird types of fruit in the world, see you are increasing our knowledge hehe The museum looks very intersting, in a good way i might add. Glad to here your having such a glorious time :) xxx p.s. im going to get my first taste of directing, mr.Whitehead has asked me to help with Middsummer nights dream! just had to tell you xxx |
| 6th October 2006 Barbara | Yummm - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) All sounds great, especially the food, not just refried beans then!! I remember the bananas - loved the little pink ones. Weather here is really gross at the mo, winter draws on etc. Keep sending the up dates, its great to hear all about your adventures!!! |
| 5th October 2006 Tony | Cracking stories ... - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) Hi Em! I just knew you'd make it a breeze ... fantastic to read your stories, which bring back a lot of memories. Yip, for me too Sao Paulo was/is a disparate collection of lumps of concrete, but as you say people make the difference, and you're obviously picking up with a great bunch of characters. Politics, eh? The Economist here says that Lula posters were absolutely everywhere. He seems to have done some good for the poor overall. But there are also echoes of your reports of corruption, which seems to be getting even worse (cash for votes, among many other scams). Still, much prefer to hear your personal accounts than depend on the newspaper - it just brings everything so much more alive! As for the food, I'm sure we'll hear more on this theme! I said exactly the same as you when I came back from India - bananas there are a completely different proposition from the bland stuff in Tescos! Here we had the Great Seafood Festival on the Stade, which went well - I called in at the FILO, and mine host said that it'd been a roaring success for him, with beer sold out completely before Sunday evening! But it looks like Autumn's coming, so we'll be hunkering down, once we've got the Hastings Week out of the way (there's been a few premature bangs (firework variety) in Warrior Square and along the seafront). Got any jobs as a bag-carrier? Love, Tony |
| 3rd October 2006 Cecile | english autumn v. sunny South America - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) As the English weather takes a turn towards showery, rainy and miserable, I read your diary with jealousy!!! The lovely food you describe makes the school food I eat every day taste even worse... ( I'm not at Helenswood anymore so don't worry this doesn't apply to lovely Philip's cooking!). Keep travelling and writing, your diary is a great read! |
| 2nd October 2006 Kris (Arabian Nights) | Nice one - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) Hey... I'm glad to hear everything's going well for you in your sunny, bright, interesting non-bexhill college like surroundings :P. And it's good to hear that the food's good... actually, have you seen any "British theme restaurants"? If you do, please go in and tell me how the rest of the world thinks we eat :D... Anyhoo... gotta get back to college crap. Bye xxx |
| 2nd October 2006 Robyn | Why does all revert back to food....?! - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) Well well Emily. It really sounds amazing. Those kilo restaurants sounds like a definate fantastic investment for England! We poor lowly students could afford those (even though I'm not a fully fledged student yet!) Enjoy the wonders of Brazil. I seem to find myself recognising all the names you're telling me, I think I studied half of them in Geography!! Love! x x x |
| 1st October 2006 Robyn | Cow - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure I have to say that I'm slightly resembling that horrible green thing I had to become last summer. Sounds like you're having a wonderful time and I can't put into words how much I hate you! Keep the pictures and stories coming as they keep me entertained during turorial! Have fun! And avoid odd men in vans... x x x x |
| 1st October 2006 sakirmo | - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) I loved those kilo restaurants - and also all those buffet restaurants I found around Brazil. I ate poorly elsewhere in South America (being a vegetarian isn't always so great there) but I must've put on all the weight I lost when I got to Brazil & Argentina, mainly thanks to the buffet places where I usually ended up eating enough to feed three people :) |
| 30th September 2006 Mum | Great update! - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) But do your clothes still fit!!?? Loads of love. |
| 30th September 2006 jan | good to hear your news - From: The obligatory food post (plus some other miscellaneous ramblings) Really enjoy getting your blogs and finding out what u r up to. Party, swim, dance, walk, clubbing, Poker, swim - or and back to your topic - lots of lovely food! hope to catch you on your travels next year! Jan |
| 29th September 2006 Chris S | A great read - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure You just made my day. I'm sitting in the LRC having had an incredibly busy week. It is so pleasing to hear that you are having a fantastic time - your little histories are really amusing so keep adding more and more. I'm intrigued about the bamboo plant but that is something best not eleaborate to the whole world. It sounds like your journey is turning out to be something you'll remember forever. That's about all the time I've got as I have to put up a wall display before I go home for the weekend (I need to get a life!) Stephanie and I are hoping to go to the New Forest for a weekend break - it rather pales into insignificance when compared to your escapades. |
| 28th September 2006 Natalie | WOW!!! - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure It sounds like you are having a totally amazing experience! WOW! It certainly beats the days at Helenswood, sharing lunchtimes and walks out to "get a breath of fresh air"!!!! The pictures look amazing and I am seriously considering seeing other parts of the world. Of course, we all miss you, but here's to you for having the balls to go travelling........on your own! I can't wait for the next log. Take care babes, keep smiling. Lots of love Natxxxx |
| 26th September 2006 Maureen | - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure Feeling distinctly green!! Just soundslike the greatest experience. Perhaps we could try to invent some more superlatives for you to use. Soundslike you are also finding some great companions on the way marvellosa! xx |
| 26th September 2006 tamsyn | chucking it in. - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure read the comments and found myself agreeing to many. but instead of coming close to unsubscribing, more like coming close to chucking in the job! glad you're having a fab time.Enjoying reading about yr escapades. |
| 25th September 2006 Stephanie | WOW - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure Fantastic - enjoy everything and drink it in! We're all green! |
| 24th September 2006 Linda & Aidan | Wow - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure Aidan and I are getting lots of vicarious pleasure from your reports. Elaine phoned today - you are not missing anything at work - even your office has vanished. Mine is good but not such as great a time as you are having. Keep enjoying. |
| 24th September 2006 DJMatt | It's no travellers rest roof party but... - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure i don't think you realise how close I am coming to clicking on the "unsubscribe to this blog" link on the email. Its just not fair, im dead jealous. you sound like you are having a great time and you've only been there a week! |
| 24th September 2006 Elli | Emily! Miss yewww !! - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure Wahoo !! you must be having a truely fantastical time there! I can't believe how much i'm missing Arabian Nights, even another of Maureen's critical comments would lighten my mood right now! Anyhow, sounds brilliant, keep up that obscene partying! xxxEllixxx |
| 24th September 2006 Ivan | MISS YOU!!! - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure Pity about the weather but by the time this is over you will no longer be the short pale girl methinks. Just short. Like me! Except with less hair. |
| 23rd September 2006 Mum | You lucky s*d!!! - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure Shouldn'd say that to your daughter should you, but you really are. It all sounds wonderful and I keep wondering how many times you will say "this is the best place I have been" before you get back in some 10/11 months time!! Keep enjoying it all. All my love, Mum xx |
| 23rd September 2006 willowmeg | Ha! Oops! - From: Samba street party, hanging out with the big man, and a bit of island hopping thrown in for good measure I hadn't actually noticed that one could comment, until you mentioned it! *grin* I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying yourself to the fullest. It must be amazing to travel alone and be so free! Best wishes to you... Meagan |
| 20th September 2006 Chris S | How could you turn him down? - From: Footie, baby! (And possibly the most bizarre waterfall story ever told) So, you finally meet a guy who shows you the eigth wonder of the world and you laugh at him. What a wicked woman you are!!!! It sounds as though you are having a marvellous time of it. At work, it's what you'd expect (maybe not quite as bad as previous terms but it's early days yet). It really does sound like fun. Enjoy it! |
| 20th September 2006 Stephanie | Sounds great - From: Footie, baby! (And possibly the most bizarre waterfall story ever told) Emily - it's a joy to read the journal! I'm glad you've met some nice people and very nifty avoidance of 'superstud'!! Hmmm, the image of pants lingers like the taste of garlic!! Your journey is definitely going to improve my geography - I know of places but still v. hazy about actual siting of said places in the world. I know the poverty is awful but it is important to witness these things so we can all change these situations - it adds experience and passion to our moral responsibility as global citizens (good lord, I've come over all preachy)!!!! Keep having a good time, learn lots and keep safe - steer clear of all brown biscuits! Love and hugs xxxxx |
| 20th September 2006 Henry | Good Luck - From: Culture shock? What culture shock? Hi Emily, Good to read your log! (I won't use the word "blog"!!!!!) Enjoy the experience of everything being strange and unfamiliar, you don't get that chance very often. Hope your Portuguese is coming on and you find a phrase book! Looking forward to further installments, Henry xx |
| 20th September 2006 anonymous | - From: Footie, baby! (And possibly the most bizarre waterfall story ever told) It sounds brilliant! Chiller.x |
| 19th September 2006 Tony | CARRY ON THE RESEARCH! - From: Footie, baby! (And possibly the most bizarre waterfall story ever told) There's a book lurking about here ("How I sailed round the Horn on a Plank", or some such ...), so make sure to keep the journal going. Travel books are selling like hot cakes! But the whole thing makes me mad with envy, as you rekindle an old man's memories! Yes, the streets of Rio do give you a jolt - easy reading about it and hearing stories, but the experience is the thing. Savour it - good, bad, and just plain daft - and keep the odd note, especially emotions and feelings to go with the stories. Research can be fun! For us, we'll just have to live vicariously through your blog ... pix are great for bringing the whole thing to life! Can you believe this is really happening?! Take care, but enjoy!!! You will ... Loads of luck and love - Tony x |
| 19th September 2006 Molly | U sure you can't come back and get me?? - From: Footie, baby! (And possibly the most bizarre waterfall story ever told) hello emily bug!! I'm sure u wana take a detour to Bexhill College and take me on the next leg of the journey?? Please *big persuasive grin* |
| 18th September 2006 Barbara | Hi - From: Footie, baby! (And possibly the most bizarre waterfall story ever told) Hi Em, Sounds (and looks) like you're having a great time!! Glad you got over the nerves, I knew you'd meet lot of wonderful people, even if some are a bit odd. Yes, the poverty is a real shock as there is nothing to compare it to in Europe. I won't bore you with details of what's going on here, enough to say- same old, same old. Induction, yawn, testing, yawnnnnnnnn. Really enjoyed your blog, bet they get shorter though as the social life warms up!!! Take care, give us more of the same so we can all be really envious. Love B xx |

| 13th September 2006 Cecile | culture shock? Yep! - From: Culture shock? What culture shock? Hey! I'm so excited at reading your travelblog, such a fantastic idea! And thanks for the great pics, it helps contextualise... you're extremely organised for someone supposedly jet lagged! Don't worry about the initial culture shock, relax and embrace the differences, that's what makes it such an adventure... It is always more obvious if you're on your own too, I remember that I felt very different on my road trip on my own as compared to the one with my mates... and both were brilliant anyway! Robbie Williams?! Oh my... are you missing the mother country so bad? Mind you it could have been worse, James Blunt comes to my mind... Well, to cheer you up, I'll let you know that it is currently pissing down with rain! Enjoy the sunshine and stay away from the favelas! Cecile, xxx |
| 13th September 2006 Mum | Stick with it Em! - From: Culture shock? What culture shock? Hold on in there - someone else sang - "things can only get better"! Can't think who though. Give yourself a break and time to start to relax and enjoy. Love Mum |
