EmStar Tiffiths - Emily T. Griffiths

Emily T. Griffiths This is the kick off! I'm leaving the USA to head across the pond to Bangor, Wales! There I'll be earning my MSc in Marine Biology. I hope to travel around Europe (of course make my stop offs in Germany) and basically start seeing a lot more of the world.

Right, so where were we? After Mom and Pops left, I had a month of hell. Four days after they left I had to hand in a 10,000 word lit review and pretty much had to hand in the rest of the work that was due for the first part of my course within a month. And so there was coffee, lots and lots of coffee. But, I got it all in and at the end of the day got the equivalent of a B+ on my course work. All that is left now was the thesis, and what a mountain [View Full Entry]

Wow, okay. What have I been doing? Breathing.... :) So this is part one of what I've been up to, starting back right before my literature review was due. Easter Break, when Mom and Dad. I saw more of the UK and Ireland in that one week than I have the entirety of the time I have previously spent in this area of the world. Mom and Dad took me to Bristol, Bath (gorgeous!), Stonehenge, Cardiff, Kilmore Key, Kilkenny and Dublin in one blind sweeping week. I, to my great dismay, did spend more time in the BnB's then I would [View Full Entry]

I woke up this morning trying to figure out how was going to compose the next section of my 10,000 word lit review on fishing practices and how they have upset the species composition of skates and rays. I made myself a cup of coffee from coffee beans sent with love from Long Island and the smell of it remind me of my father. I wrote 1800 words this morning and I still have miles to go. I've been very neglectful of this blog. But those of you that know me well I'm sure that comes as no surprise. Here's what [View Full Entry]

I took the train from Köln to Frankfurt and, as Nora had predicted, the journey was very pretty. We followed the Rein river for most of the trip. I arrived at Frankfurt on time where, in the terminal, Jenny and I stared at each other for a few minutes before we recognized each other because years apart introduces different hair cuts and different styles. We spent the night catching up in her apartment in Bad Vilbel, just outside of the main city of Frankfurt. For those that are curious, Jenny was my German partner in the student exchange I participated in [View Full Entry]

I find it funny that everyone one spells Köln like Cologne except from the German people. It's the same in Wales, the English went in there and started renaming and spelling things. Seriously guys, what gives? The first leg of Emily's German adventure took place in Köln with her awesome classmate, Nora. Nora's family was kind enough to put me up for about a week before I headed to Frankfurt for Christmas and New Years. The first thing that Nora did the day after I got off the plane was take me to the Köln Dom, the historic Cathedral in the [View Full Entry]

I've been all types of busy lately. Sorry for the delayed reaction time in the travel blogs. They really do CRAM a master's into one year. I'm working my little booty off. This module is about surveying planning. The marine biologists share this module with the marine environmental protection (MEP) master students, totaling with 26 students. We, as a team, are surveying Shell Island off the coast of mid-Wales. Shell Island has for major habitats, Rocky Shore, Sandy Shore, Mudflat and Saltmarsh. The 26 of us have split into four teams, respectively, to survey the entire island. I'm on the rocky [View Full Entry]

So many exciting things, let's start from the top. Last weekend I was in Birmingham at the Dive show, buying myself a fantastic new semi-dry so I can dive into the colder months. Wetsuit models always look so silly, no one ever looks sexy in a wetsuit. Sausage is the more accurate term to use. My roommate Sarah and I stayed at our friend Harriet's parents apartment and had a small opportunity to walk around the city. Birmingham is known for being an industrial, laid out town, and not very pretty. It is even home to one of England's ugliest buildings, [View Full Entry]

I feel like I should clarify that I am not actually living in Bangor. I barely even go to Bangor. I live on the Isle of Anglesey, in a small town call Menai Bridge that lives just along the Menai strait that separates Anglesey from North Wales. Maps in first blog. I only say this because I think Menai Bridge is hella prettier then Bangor. Joining the SCUBA club. I'll be getting a bunch of dives in once my semi-dry suit comes for my Birthday (thanks mom and dad). I'm looking forward to diving with Dog fish, apparently when you hold [View Full Entry]

As the saying goes, I am alive and well. Because of reasons unknown to me (and my amazing father), I found myself in a business class seat from JFK to Manchester. There was REAL food, and REAL space to stretch out and sleep. So I did. After having dinner, part 2, I slept almost soundly for most of the flight. The only real downfall of business class had nothing to do with Delta at all. It have everything to do with the woman sitting next to me trying to get me, on the flight, after I had informed her I was [View Full Entry]

Well, at 10 pm today there is a flight reserved in my name on Delta from JFK international airport in NY to Manchester international in the UK. But I will not be on that flight. My visa did not come in the mail today, which also means that I do not have my passport, because the British Consulate still has it. So instead of leaving tonight, arriving in Wales tomorrow morning, I will leave Wednesday night (giving my passport/visa 3 extra business days to get to me) and arrive in Manchester Thursday morning. I'm going to miss most of orientation, but [View Full Entry]
