Tonight will be my last hostel night for some time. I'm in western Berlin at another great hostel called JetPak with free internet :) and very friendly staff here too. Yesterday, getting into Berlin, the train from Prague was 2 hours late and was disappointed to find the warmly recommended hostel was fully booked for the weekend. I did get a bed in a pension a few streets away which was fine and today I managed to get one here. A much liked Irish guy I met in Prague sent me here so they squeezed me in. Now it seems everyone here is going out on a pub crawl but I can't really stomach that today... These two weeks have been very intense and I find myself being very tired after a 3, 4 hour walking ... read more
So, to take up where I ended last time - Balaton Sound. The last days were great, all in the same atmosphere as the first few days. We lazed endlessly in the shade while listening to a house dj in the day, we danced to Fatboy Slim in the evening (what a funny guy...) as he reminded us to be "right here, right now".. Sunday afternoon the heat was getting more and more stuffy while dark ominous clouds were rolling in and they even warned the happy festival campers in the speaker system that there was going to be a lot of rain. Or at least that was what our Hungarian neighbours kindly translated to us. So we got ready for the apocalypse, stabilizing the tent, getting the fly to the hammock into place, thanked ourselves ... read more
Am sitting in a lounge, listening to some dj playing nice afternoon sun music. It's a bit too loud for conversation, but who needs conversation when you can just chill out, watching glorious lake Balaton - it's shore line just a few meters away. Apparently the festival is sold out, 120 000 tickets, and the party is on till late into the night. Vanessa, waking up at 4.30 last night, said that the music was still going strong at that time. We'd succumbed to our tiredness and crawled into bed (well, into tent and hammock respectively..) a few hours before that, after watching an amazing concert with Massive Attack, unbelievable. (I can't seem to find an exclamation mark on this keyboard, so you'll have to imagine them at the proper places...) We watched Swedish Koop from ... read more
The Sahara Hotnights song got me inspired, so now I'm at a hostel in Vienna and after two days of walking and biking around town my legs won't carry me any further. So I'm just staying in, maybe I'll go for a beer in the hostel bar in a while. I left home Monday morning and after 23 hours of train-riding I walked out of Westbahnhof, blinking in the Vienna sun. I'd then gone from Goteborg via Copenhagen, with the train onto the ferry from Rodby to Puttgarten. After a ten minute stop in Hamburg I got onto the night train to Vienna where I shared a cabin with three Danes, and two austrian women. If I'd felt lonely before, worried about not meeting people, I certainly didn't feel very lonely any more.. To say it ... read more
A quick stop at a internet cafe in Havanna to publish some pictures from my sailing trip. Enjoy!... read more
The previous weekend was the annual sailing race here on the west coast. From Skärhamn to Hunnebostrand one windy Saturday. I was on Hawila equipped with a major urge to sail and my camera - so I thought I'd share some of the results... *sail away with me honey*... read more
I must admit that the location is a bit of a lie - I've been home for more than a week already. But sitting at home in my apartment that I share with my very good friend Johanna after a long day of school and work I just felt I wanted to do something else. Something that isn't sleeping, reading the very interesting but quite massive books for my class or just mindlessly surfing the internet. That's what I do these days instead of flipping through TV-channels (we've both decided against television). Both activities are quite equal in meaninglessness... Anyway, I thought I'd write a few details of our trip to Shanghai. We spent 10 days in a city to which it is very hard to give a fair description. It can be overflowing with people ... read more
With less than a week left until I go back home, I can´t quite grip how fast the last couple of months have passed. But it´s always like that - come halfway and the rest just rolls by. Before leaving, two and a half months sounded like a fairly long time, but I´ve been meeting so many travellers that have been gone for five, eight, twelve months. I guess it always feels too short, no matter how long you´re gone. After that little philosophical moment I´m going to tell you about my days in Bocas del Toro, Panama. Panama meant another country for me but as a briefly visiting tourist in a highly touristy place I didn´t notice much of a difference besides that the beers were no longer Imperial or Pilsen but Panama or Balboa. ... read more
I´ve been here in this little surftown now for a week but I just can´t seem to rip myself away. I just don´t seem to get bored. Is it the waves? The white sand? The blazing sun? The mesmerizing sunsets? All the people at the hostel? I like the tranquil chill of this place. You can´t help but feel like the world is only here and now. Far away from time, worries and cold. here the waves never stop thundering in - they carry surfers, throw me around like a ragdoll in a frenzy of white foam. They go in and out with the tide, flush over crabs and stones and seashells, sparkle in the sun, not holding a breath for even the most spectacular sunset and shine beautifully but somewhat malevolently in the the glazing ... read more
Hi all, Elin's taking a quick break while I update her friends and family on our travels together. For those of you who are unaware, Elin and I found each other courtesy of this lovely website and came together upon my arrival in San Jose. The morning of the 16th of April, she came up to me at a dark, sketchy bus terminal in the Coca-cola district of San Jose. An exchange of photos assured me that I had the right person. We were very glad to find each other, as someone had launched into a scam whereby they were trying to convince her that our bus had already left, without us. Turns out that he was wrong, and once we realized that it was still around, we were on our way. After checking our bags, ... read more
