After 365 days of travelling and nearly 70000 miles we have finally made it back home to England We landed back at London Gatwick Airport to an emotional welcome home from our parents who had come to meet us at the airport and it was so great to see them after such a long time away. We were soon back at Elaines Mum Dads house drinking our first cup of English tea for a long time an

Our trip was nearly coming to an end but we had one more state to visit first. Our flight home was booked to depart from Tampa but we had a week to visit Florida beforehand so we headed to Miami first and stopped a few days at Miami Beach. As it is now past summer a lot of the hotels have cheap deals so we managed to get a nice hotel right on Miami Beach just a mile or so north from the Art De

Philadelphia was the only place we were going to on our round the world trip that we had already been to before. Our friends live just outside Philadelphia in a town called Plymouth Meeting and as we were driving in Elaine started to remember places she had been many times and it was all a kind of coming home feelingWe spent a long weekend in Plymouth Meeting enjoying spending time with our f

Our journey across the Great Plains to the Great Lakes

We left the stunning Yellowstone National Park behind and continued our long drive east. We headed out of the east side of the park up and over the Sylvan Pass through part of the Rocky Mountains. This road was supposed to be the most scenic entrance into the park but is often closed due to snow fall and avalanches. Luckily that did not affect us and it certainly was pretty spectacular going

Wildlife encounters at Grand Teton and Yellowstone

We stayed in the town of Jackson just south of Grand Teton and Yellowstone National Parks. It was a great little town very much setup for the tourist and we could easily imagine it covered in snow in the peak of the ski season. We had an awesome drive in coming up and over the mountains from Teton Pass with a great view of the town from the top. We didn't have a great deal of time in the

The start of our long journey east...

We left California and started the long journey east. We were planning to go to Yellowstone so decided on a route that took us through Oregon and Idaho so we could see a couple more national parks that had caught our interest namely Crater Lake in Oregon and Craters of the Moon in Idaho. The pictures of Crater Lake that we had seen were absolutely stunning a fantastic deep blue lake surrounded

The Redwood Coast

After leaving Yosemite we decided to head back towards the coast of California to the area known as the Redwood Coast. This is home to some of the last remaining forests of the huge Redwood trees and as it was pretty stunning walking through the Giant Sequoias in Yosemite we thought we'd pay them a visit. It was a pretty long drive to get there in one day so we stopped at a town called Redding

The Beautiful Yosemite National Park

We were really looking forward to Yosemite as it is one of the iconic national parks of the United States and probably the most popular in the whole country about 4 million people visit this park a year. The accommodation in the park gets booked up really early and it is really expensive so we decided to stay outside the park which meant about an hours drive each day... but it was certainly w

Driving up Highway 1 to San Francisco

We left the mad world of LA behind us and headed up the coast hoping for some great weather and some gorgeous scenery. As we drove out of Santa Monica and joined the famous Highway 1 we passed Malibu and other typical Californian beach scenes on the way up to our first stop in Santa Barbara. The real spectacular section of Highway 1 was further up the coast but Santa Barbara was supposed to b

We headed back to LA after the delights of the canyons to travel up the coast on the famous Highway 1 but neither of us were really sure of spending much time in LA but thought we might as well see the city as we were here. It would have been a long journey to go direct from Grand Canyon so we stopped off a night to break up the journey and as we had already been to Las Vegas thought we would

The Grand Canyon was always on our list of places to go but to visit the quieter North Rim with hardly any towns nearby we had to book a room a while ago... we booked it while we were in Cusco in fact before the Inca Trail We started the journey from Monument Valley and as there are not many places to cross the Colorado River it makes the drive a long one to the North Rim almost 5 hours in

Our journey continued around the Canyon Country in Utah and next was a trip to the Canyonlands National park. It is a huge national park where the canyon has been carved by 2 rivers the Colorado and the Green River and as it is so big it is split into 3 different areas. We visited the most northern part of the park first called Island in the Sky and we were greeted by an amazing view over

Zion Bryce Capital Reef National Parks

We left the craziness of Las Vegas behind and started our journey around the States. We headed first of all to Zion National Park. The prices of accommodation anywhere near the parks are really expensive and outside of the cities there are very few hostels so we stayed in a small town called Hurricane about 20 miles down the road from Zion.We stayed around Zion for 3 days and enjoyed a few hike

After travelling around South America for 4 months we will miss so much... the craziness the colourful people trying to communicate in Spanish Back at home we only hear the bad things about the continent and how dangerous it is but we didn't have any problems and every country we visited was absolutely amazing. We head to the US for the final part of our trip and our plan is to travel all th

Since our last blog we have been travelling the islands of the Galapagos another place which was near the top of our places to visit and all we can say is that they were amazing hence the 3 pages of photos We booked a trip with GAP and flew out from Quito to spend a week sailing around the islands. As soon as we arrived we were greeted by sea lions... sleeping on the benches at the dock as

From Lima we flew north to the capital of Ecuador Quito. We had a trip to the Galapagos Islands booked and had a few spare days before that started so we just stayed in the city and relaxed a bit after our travels across South America which were coming to an end. We booked ourselves into a nice hostel and we were joined for a couple of days by a friend Paula who we had travelled with across

Arequipa to Lima

It was a sad goodbye to Cusco when we eventually left and headed to Arequipa it was a fantastic city and we had had such a great time there and on the Inca Trail. We left in the afternoon for a flight to Arequipa but in typical Cusco fashion there was a huge parade going on at the time all the roads were blocked so the bus had difficulties picking us up and then the bus driver went to the bus

When we decided to travel for a year the top of the list of things to do was the Inca Trail which is a 3 night4 day hike of about 42km to Machu Picchu and after many years of dreaming we were here and about to start We had to book the tour months in advance as the trail is so popular and they limit the numbers to about 500 a day but that number includes the porters so only about 200 touris

We travelled on to our next stop Cusco by bus passing some great scenery along the way. As we reached the highest pass there were snow capped mountains and the inevitable market stalls selling all sorts of llama and alpaca clothes that you can find everywhere in Peru After the pass we headed down through the scenic valley passing little villages and towns... a taster perhaps of things to

From La Paz we travelled on to Lake Titicaca which is shared by Bolivia and Peru although we were told to remember that Peru owns 60 by a Peruvian guy and is the highest navigable lake in the world at 3800 meters above sea level. We stopped in the Bolivian town of Copacabana just before the border where we ate lunch on the way through to Peru. We enjoyed the local delicacy of Trout fre
