I'm allowing myself one dodgy pun heading a month. I don't know how it's happened, but I've got a few absolutely blinding days to add to my blog! Upon arrival in San Ignacio we were immediately set upon by a series of full on tour guides, each more aggressive and determined than the last! Whilst I was busy attempting to fend them off with my typically British reserve, one particularly wrinkly rastafarian sexagenarian (say that 4 times after a cuba libre) managed to drop his card into my hand. Anyway, this particular chap (going by the exotic name of David Simpson) [View Full Entry]

Even lovelier view

ello ello ello Yesterday we left the turquoise seas and sand streets of Caye Caulker to head to inland Belize - we arrived yesterday evening in San Ignacio in the Cayo district, which with its sister town Santa Elena is the second most populated area in Belize. And its about the size of Oundle! (for those of you who don't know - my hometown, population about 5,000). Well - I exaggerate slightly, but it is not very big. There's two rivers running through and lots of activites based around them - we're off kayaking through the forest tomorrow so pretty excited [View Full Entry]

Beware Scrumpy!

Dearest Scurvy Landlubbers, You find us in deepest darkest Pirate land. Belize was formed by a colony of British pirate types who'd grown tired of sailing the seven seas, and had run out of limbs to lose in the midst of various daring dos. But, like an over-eager drum and bass DJ, I think we need a rewind. If you caught Nat's last blog, we left Mexico late last week. For my take, Chichen Itza was impressive, but I'm not sure how it got it's 7th Wonder status, over say Palenque, which is maybe less well preserved, but makes up for [View Full Entry]

...to resist calling this blog 'You better Belize it', 'Belize it or not', 'Seeing is Belize-ing' etc. We've done quite a bit of moving on over the last few days. We left Merida last Tuesday on a very very early bus (6.30am) to get to Chichen Itza for the day. It was fabulously impressive, especially the giant ball court which is decorated with friezes of beheaded game players. Historians aren't sure whether it was the losing or winning team who lost their heads, as sacrifice was apparently considered a great honour. The Mayans, and the Toltecs who took over Chichen Itza [View Full Entry]

There goes next month's budget
Lord knows how we´re going to justify this one. Without even so much as a half hearted "anniversary" to justify it, we´ve gone and booked ourselves into another boutique, luxury, ridiculously nice, Grand Designs-style hotel from heaven. Regular readers willl spot a trend developing that will probably have us home, destitute and begging from affluent friends by Christmas. Hi guys! The "Medio Mundo" is just about perfect really, interior designed to within an inch of it´s life, staffed by attentive smiley staff, and made solely from gold, platinum and semi precious stones*. It´s making us quite homesick for Brixton. Acually I [View Full Entry]

Hiya, its Nat here again. So, we´re in the jungle! There are some amazing Mayan ruins at a place called Palenque, and we are hostelled in a little bit of jungle just outside which has a stream, cabanas, and bizarrely a restaurant making some of the best pizza I´ve ever had (apart from the hideaway of course!) and wicked local bands playing. A local kid of about 3 got very into it all last night - he kept climbing up on the stage and in the end the bongo player got up and put the kid down in front of the [View Full Entry]

Amazing place!

Time for my first gushing blog. Mexico is absolutely amazing, and frankly I don´t want to leave. In fact, if it weren´t for the fact that we're heading on to some pretty cool places next, I don´t think we would! A bit about San Cristobal in a moment, but first a few random things that I love about the place, in no particular order: 1) Every reasonble sized town that we've visited so far (with the notable exception of the odious Acapulco) has had some kind of fiesta going on. From the Miss Taxco competition (pictures to follow!), to last night's [View Full Entry]

Can´t think why now!
Hello friends, Today we're tearing ourselves away from Puerto Escondido, a bit later than originally planned! We've had a lovely and relaxing few days hanging out on various perfect beaches and - well, not a lot else really! A bit of walking and exploring the local area, and having decided trying to learn to surf in waves that massive was probably suicidal, we opted for the safer option of boogie boarding, which was wicked. It seems the wave is called the Mexican Pipeline because it actually forms a massive tube as it breaks. Its amazing watching the surfers ride all the [View Full Entry]

Puerto Escondido is breathtaking. To be fair anything is going to look good after 8.5 hours on a bumpy bus. Up to now the bus rides have been pretty good, lots of leg room, amusingly dubbed movies, and generally not more than 3 or 4 hours in duration. However yesterday it all went down hill rather rapidly (though not literally, which was on the cards on a few occasions!) The toilet was worthy of Glastonbury, the air con reduced us to a near cryogenic state, the roads were more like the tracks I´d rather by riding my bike on, and to [View Full Entry]

Hello All We've been having some more fun since we spoke to you last, staying in Taxco, an old silver mining town in the mountains south of Mexico city. Highlights included browsing all the silver shops which brought out the magpie in both of us. Si was on the verge of buying a silver topped walking stick when I found him, but I reminded him he wouldn't have much use for it having forgotten to pack his tap shoes. We also had a great trip to the Grutas de Cacahuamilpa, gigantic caves with thousands of years worth of build up of [View Full Entry]
