Head saws…. thrashing sharks…. blood & guts…. howling gales…. dark moody skies…. foggy roads…. Albany’s a town that could easily be written into a Scooby Doo episode. Let us explain…. The sun shone most of the way from Margaret River, the day we travelled down the coast, but the nearer we got to Albany, the heavier the air became, we got a bit of rain, and steam rose from the roads to form a hazy mist all around us. By the time we arrived, the skies were navy blue & grey, with plenty of clouds, and a wind that would cut [View Full Entry]

On the way from Margaret River to Albany, we stopped off near a place called Walpole where there is a superb forest full of amazing Tingle Tingle trees. These trees are MASSIVE, growing up to 60m in height, and 20m round the base. There’s a tree top walk that you can do there called ‘The Valley of the Giants’ which consists of a woodland walk (Ancient Empire Walk at ground level) and a suspended metal walkway taking you to 40 metres above the ground where you can admire the outstanding beauty of these wonderful trees from an excellent & unusual viewpoint. Pencil shavings, baked bread, plums, vanilla, chocolate……. These are just a few of the aromas and taste notes to be found in the amazing wines we tried on our ‘Wine for Dudes’ tour in the Margaret River wine region! What a brilliant time we had. Although, in fairness, since we left Perth in Tony the Toyota last Friday, we’ve been having a ball from sunrise to sunset each and every day. So - here’s what we’ve been up to……… Firstly, to get your bearings, think of a map of Aus. We are currently situated on the bottom left ha [View Full Entry]

When you’re in Perth, an absolute MUST is to take a trip to Rottnest Island (known locally as Rotto). It’s a breathtakingly beautiful little island located off the West coast about 20 kms from Perth / Fremantle. It’s only about 11km long and 5km wide, and although there is a road which takes you all the way round, there are only about 5 cars on the island - making it perfect for cycling. The waters around Rotto look like Barbados - pure turquoise and azure blue, and are pretty shallow in most parts. Inland, you could be forgiven for thinking that [View Full Entry]

THE EGGS ARE BOILING!!!!!!!!!!!!! We left KL on a Rrrrrrrooooaaassting hot day (was about 35 degrees). When we got to the bus station we had to wait about an hour and a half to get on the bus, there were limited seats in the station, and there was no air con. Aah, so this is what it means to travel budget style?? Hangin around, sweat dripping off the end of your nose, and nae seats in a stinky bus station. The romance of it all! Of course, I'm making it sound worse that it was. We managed to plank our bums [View Full Entry]

Hi all We’ve been in Kuala Lumpur (KL) for about 1 week now, and under normal circumstances that’d probably be a couple of days too long. However, we had a few matters to sort out which took longer than we thought (rescheduling flights to Aus was one thing) and given that we had found an excellent 5 star hotel for only 25 pounds a night - and the weather was behaving itself - we agreed to hang around here and do what we needed to do in this relaxed environment. We are also right across the road from a shopping centre [View Full Entry]

Once we'd decided to head back to Bangkok, we quickly made some arrangements for onward bus & catamaran travel, booked a nice hotel, and left the next morning. Typically, the weather was sunny as we left Ko Tao (however, I've checked blogs since and it started right back up again the next day). The journey North was a bit more eventful. I was quite ill on the crossing back to Chumphon. The captain of the boat was obviously in a hurry to make up time ,as the catamaran left half an hour late, and his enthusiasm knew no bounds - much [View Full Entry]

Egg 2 After Bangkok, we were intent on going to Chiang Mai, which is in the North of Thailand, to do some trekking and perhaps a cookery course, however when we tried to book the tickets to take us there they didnt have any availability on the trains that suited us. So - we had a quick rethink and decided to head South to the island of Ko Tao instead. Ko Tao means Turtle island and is close to Ko Samui and Ko Phangan where the famous full moon parties take place once a month. The island is renowned for Diving [View Full Entry]
