Angahuan is a Purepecha Indian Village that is steeped in history. From the moment we arrived were entranced with the beauty of this magical place. The village is famous for the nearby church ruins. In 1943 a farmer was working in his field when the ground began shaking. This area developed a new volcano that erupted for 9 years. The lava encompassed 2 villages, however no one was killed. The people from these villages now live in the neighboring communities of San Juan Nuevo or Uruapan. There are ruins of a church that remain. The Church was a significant church in the Region. Baptisiams, marriages and ceremonies for the region were held in this Cathedral. As we entered the village we knew this was a special place. It was a beautiful small village and there was ... read more

We left Maruata Beach and stopped for an ill fated trip to Playa Azul. During an arduous day of driving, we had stopped at a roadside restaurant for lunch. Marsha and I had Shrimp Soup, which was served with the whole shrimp. We pulled out the shrimp, removed the heads and the shells and enjoyed our soup. I think I have finally learned my lesson with Shrimp. That night, we all went to a great Restaurant just down the street from the campground and pigged out on mole, chile rellenos, quesillas and beans and rice. Oh Yeah, cold beer too… It was raining all day, all night and still raining the next morning. The campground was a big mud pit, but we decided to stay rather than drive again on slick wet roads. Good thing! No ... read more

I had read that Maruata Beach was the prettiest beach on the Michocan coast. They were right. It is a very small rural town. We followed Paul´s directions, drove down to the beach and found a restaurant that was willing to let us camp on their lot. There actually were 2 other truck campers camped a little ways down the beach. We got set up and enjoyed a nice shrimp dinner at the restaurant. It had been a long day, so Marsha and I turned in early. When Ed came to bed, he was so excited because he and Ray had seen 3 sea turtles come to shore to lay their eggs. I got up early the next morning and took Red for his walk on the beach. I could not believe the number of turtle ... read more

Just outside of Melaque we received a text message from Marsha asking where we were, and that they were already there. Without really planning it, we joined up again with Paul and Terry and Ray and Marsha. One big happy family, plus Terry´s son Darcy and Granddaughter Abigail had joined them. The campground in Melaque is interesting because one side of the campground is on a beautiful lagoon and the other is on the beach. This campground also is part of a bungalow resort. There is a beautiful pool and restaurant. We enjoyed sitting by the lagoon and watching the various birds. There was one very unusual one, his feathers were iridescent, with a white butt , long legs and big feet. He could fly, but mostly he walked, over grass, lily pads and up palm ... read more

When we first arrived in La Manzanilla we knew we had found our spot. The campground was very basic, bucket flush toilet and outdoor cold shower. But La Manzanilla is a small town located on Bay of Tenacatita. We had to camp at the back of the campground, next to the street because of the low hanging palm fronds. There is a lovely beach along the entire bay. Just down the beach is the center of town with several restaurants, stores and the town plaza. Our first day there we met Gary. Gary and his wife Debra spend their winters in La Manzanilla and are originally from Seattle. Gary invited us to join a small group for Sunset Happy Hour on the beach. We happily accepted and met several nice people who welcomed us and shared ... read more

Okay, I may have landed in paradise. I had read about this RV spot is another post and I really wanted to check it out. Ray and Marsha were already here, so we knew things were crowded. We were able to get the last spot at Villas El Dorado. It is primarily bungalows, but they have 4 RV sites. There is a wrought iron gate over the entry, so large RV´s cannot make it in. We have a beautiful campsite. The hotel and property are gorgeous. We spend the afternoons sitting out on the patio right by the beach. The beaches are spotless. There are numerous vendors. I got up yesterday morning and went down to the beach to buy fish. I was able to buy fresh dorado. They cleaned and filleted the fish. I bought ... read more

We hit the road for our first solo trip without much sleep. Ed was snarfleing all night and I think we were both a little anxious. Ed went to sleep after 1am and me after 2am. We did okay. The Garmin said the trip should take 5 hours and it took us 6. Lots of steep windy roads and we were often stuck behind double trailer trucks that were crawling along. The Highway climbed over the Sierra Madre mountain range and we where over 6,000 ft. elevation. The views were really incredible, but hard to enjoy because you both have to watch the road every minute. The small towns in Mexico have speed bumps called “Topes”. You encounter Topes as you enter each town, at school crossings and often, for no reason at all. Often they ... read more

We had our first major wrong turn which resulted in 3 truck campers winding our way through the small town of Tala. Since many of the Mexican towns are old cobblestone streets, we have to watch for getting through the narrow streets, often with cars parked on one or both sides; turning corners, we often have to back up a couple of times to make the turn and low hanging wires. You never realize how tall the truck camper sits until you come into these small towns with Christmas decorations hung across the buildings.Chimilco is a ballinero, or Mexican swimming area. This one features an adjacent RV Park. The park was very nice and the swimming complex was impressive. Each day a different pool was filled with 90 degree water. There was also a large children’s ... read more

We spent today at the Casa Herradura enjoying a tour and tequila tasting. After a good nights sleep we headed over to the nearby town of Tequila. Of course, we had to stop on the way at a taco stand for a quick taco fix. The tour was very nice. We were the only ones on the tour and our guide Saul spoke very good english. We toured the entire factory and learned the process of how tequila is made. We saw how the blue aqave is baked in the large ovens and even tasted some of the baked aqave. It tasted like a sweet potato. The tour explained the fermintation process, dilstillation and the difference between the different types of tequila. The tour lasted well over 3 hours. At the end, we tasted several different ... read more

We stopped at a roadside stand on the way out of town to buy shrimp tamales. When I opened them up, there were whiskers coming out of each end. Guess what? There were 2 whole shrimp in each one. Tasty, but we will have to deconstruct them to eat them. They were 8 for $100p. Expensive tolls and bumpy roads, the libre roads must be hell. Chili and Potato tacos, Yum! We took mostly toll roads until we got through Tepic, then we took the libre (free road) for the last 15 Km to the turn off for Santa Maria del Oro. Ed said every truck with wheels was loaded with sugar cane. It is amazing how high they stack the trucks, plus you could not fit a toothpick in there. We were stuck behind ... read more
