We are nearing the end of the Japan adventure but don't fear, there are many pictures to close with a bang! We stayed in a little Hostel/Guest House place called Bola Bola. It was quaint and beautiful. It was also about 40 min. from the main district of Kyoto or Gion. It was a tiny little out of the way place, yet everywhere we mentioned it, everyone knew exactly where you were talking about. Our food wasn't nearly so elegant as it was back in Shamoda, but still very tasty all the same. While in Gion and surronding areas, we visited Shines, Palaces, Markets, lots of shopping (not a lot of buying - very very expensive) and we even took part in a Traditional Tea ceremony. And to steal a quote from another blog I read, ... read more
The following is ......well.....it is what it is. An Original Asile~Haras creation. Anything in first person in the beginning section is referring to Sarah. Enjoy! Ode to Bill All instructors are required to fill out PERSONALIZED comments for EVERY STUDENT'S report card, which can lead to a slight case of insanity and copious amounts of chocolate (Elisa would like to point out that she learned that word from me, her English-speaking friend). I finished my comments a few days ago, all very serious and professional, but due to Elisa's less-than-ideal wrist tendons, I offered to type her comments as she dictated them. Out of the kindness of my heart, and not at all because it promised free food. DISCLAIMER: None of the following comments were actually used. They were merely stress relievers when we COULD NOT ... read more
As I promised, here is part 2 of my Japan adventure. This entry will finish off the photos from the Izu peninsula and then I will talk about Kyoto in the 3rd part. More mountains, flowers, clouds, sea and food to see! I also have included the crazy maze of a journey that we had at our first (Hotel) that has 14 different pictures to capture the journey from our personal room to the front door (exit). In between each picture I took several steps. It really was a very long (exciting) walk. Along with all of that there are extensive Waterfall pictures! I need to get the pictures from my parents of me swimming in the waterfall!!!! :) SOOOO cool! OOH! and a sprial bridge!!! 3 times!!! heehee! It all ends with a mountain top ... read more
HEEHEE!!! Ah, yeah, so Sarah and I found an Ice Cream cafe in Seoul that carries strictly 100% Dairy free and Vegan icecream!!!! Sooooooooo exciting! It is called Purely Decadant, it is an American company! After Jeffrey's birthday with his (real) icecream birthday cake, Sarah and I commandeered the cooler box that it came in and ah...went to Seoul and got a ridiculous amount of our icecream! :) The really cool part is, is they give you Dry Ice in the box so that it stays frozen the whole way home! :) THEN you get to play with the dry ice at home! SO MUCH FUN!!!! Here are a couple of videos of said fun! Enjoy! Elisa... read more
We started our travels by staying a few days in Shimoda 下田 on the Izu Peninsula 伊豆半島. While there we rented a car and traveled all along the coast taking hundreds of pictures as we went. It was "off" season, so the roads and tourist areas were not busy. Good thing for the roads especially! They are very much like the roads you find in the peak district in England. Beautiful, narrow, and very curvy! Fun but a little scary at times. Also the onsens (Natural hot springs heated from the earth's core), were mostly empty so we could relax in our own private baths. While in Shimoda, we stayed at a Ryokan. (Ryokan are Japanese style inns - Guests stay in Japanese style rooms with tatami floor and a low table. Shoes are usually removed ... read more
My second year here in Korea celebrating Canada Day and it was another great success! I had left over temp. tattoos from the year before which I put on my arm and leg and then also gave to Sarah, another Canadian work and ever two Americans! I also had little Canadian flag pins on my shirt and Sarah put them on her white dress, which she appropriately wore with red shoes. I even decided to be extra kind this year (kind/crazy) and share my Maple Syrup with my fellow teachers, staff members and even my students! Before work I stopped at the dollar store bought a whole bunch of disposable spoons, that way there would be no double dipping. I gave each person their own spoon so that they could have a taste of our Canadian ... read more
AHHHHHHHHHGGGRRRRRR!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! (she screams in silent anger as she sits in her chair afraid to actually open her mouth for fear that it may induce further pain) Here is another poem I wrote for today's feelings and adventures. The reason for this one is that I just got back from the Dentist. Never a great thing in any day. I went with the idea that I had a cavity to have fixed, but instead he told me there was none! BUT, that instead, the pain and sensitivity that I have been feeling on my one tooth, is actually coming from the tooth beside it and I will probably have to have yet another root canal to fix the problem. You see this tooth in question, years ago, had a cavity, it got fixed by being filled with ... read more
Ok, so the pictures are coming, I swear! But when you have over 1000 pictures, it takes a LONG time to get them all figured out. Soon, very soon. In the mean time, I have been doing a lot of thinking about what will be next in my life of adventures, for no matter where I am, it is an adventure! So my most recent thoughts have been looking into the world of communication. No, nothing to do with Media, but instead looking at the very basics of all humanity, the art form that is communicating. I have always been interested in Sociology and I even took it as a sort of unofficial Minor in University along side of my Music degree. After completing my year of Teacher's College, I became even more aware of "good" ... read more
Today I awoke to my alarm. An alarm with the purpose of awaking me for the morning job of taking my temperature. Today I am in quarantine. A quarantine that started 5 nights and 4 days ago. Today my voice is starting to return. I long to sing again. Today the sun is shinning, but I must stay inside. I must stay inside because I am in quarantine. I am not sick. Today I enjoyed 2 short intervals of human interaction beyond the walls of my apartment. I had to get food. The time was short but the walk was slow. Today I made someone laugh. In turn, also making me laugh. Today I said goodbye to 2 friends. Colleagues turn friends. Friends turn Art collaborators. Today I cried. Elisa (Ashley and Alicia - you will ... read more
On April 11th of this year I boarded a coach bus mixed with Americans, Canadians and Koreans and headed North only about 65 miles to reach.....the DMZ! Interesting and fun mixed with a definite fear and adventure. Here are the pictures (some not..so..ah...) you figure it out. For those of you who don't know, the DMZ is the DeMilitarized Zone between the two Koreas. Basically No Mans Land. I never did actually set foot in North Korea, but I was able to see it and walk where North Korean soldiers had tried to invade in the past. Take a look, but step lightly, there are still active land mines! Elisa... read more
