Another week down!! I realize I'm over the half-way hump and will be home now in less than two weeks!! Yikes! I have so much more I want to absorb before returning to the US. My school week last week was slightly different. The particular teacher that I had focused a bit more on cultural aspects and day-to-day type things, which was great, but I also realized that those dang Pronombres will keep returning to haunt me time and time again. So not having those down 100% was frustrating for me. However, Dave you'll be pleased...I requested (and finally got!!!) Rosanna [View Full Entry]

Post Xochicalco

I just wanted to blog long enough to say THANKS again to all of you that made it possible for me to be here!!! I really am having the time of my life and I don't think that I could be in a more nurturing, caring environment in which to learn Spanish. Most nights I lie awake smiling because I know how blessed I to have been given this opporunity. My Spanish is improving, poco a poco, and I really feeling like I'm gaining so much insight into the culture I'll soon be working with every day. I'm also so happy [View Full Entry]

Whew! I survived the weekend! It was a wonderful one, but definitely one that left me feeling muy cansada esta mañana! As mentioned, the weekend kicked off with a giant fiesta here at the school. And....the rumors of the mariachi band were true!! As we were all stuffing our faces with the delicious food from the cooks, a 12-man mariachi group strutted out onto the patio and had us all up and on our feet in only a few seconds!! Never have I seen such an amazing, up-close performance by so many talented Mexican musicians! It was fun seeing everyone in [View Full Entry]

I Always Stop to Smell the Roses in Life!

Things are changing a lot this week at Cuauhnáhuac.... The Colorado group and Cal Poly group both leave for the airport at 5am tomorrow morning, so Anne and I are both losing our wonderful roomies. *tear* However, it's not completely the end of an era just yet....Anne and I will also be boarding a bus EARLY tomorrow morning to meet Ashley, Jordan, and Sandra (all from the Colorado group) for two days of fun in Mexico City. We've booked a hostel for the night and plan to see Xochimilco and the Diego Rivera and Frida Kahlo museums tomorrow and whatever else [View Full Entry]

¡Iguanas!

I survived a WET Monday back at school!! It started raining last night while I was walking home and was still raining when I woke up this morning. Now it's 2:30pm and it just stopped raining!! Made for an interesting walk to school this morning.... There were about 10 of us Americans all walking along the busy Avenida Morelos squealing and throwing our bodies against the wall to protect our clothes from the gallons of water being splashed at us from the bus drivers who get enjoyment from our pain. But at least we were all drowning in our misery together!! [View Full Entry]

Wow...I feel like I have a million things to say! And we'll see how well they come out.... You see, the more I try to speak Spanish, the less I can speak English. The words get all jumbled up in my mouth and then come out in a rather frightening way! So now I can't speak Spanish well, nor can I speak English well. Hmph! I finished up my first week of classes on Friday! I can hardly believe how fast the week went, although every day felt like one of those long "Mexico days." After class and comida I usually [View Full Entry]

¡Las Estacas!
¡Mangos!
Gurgle, gurgle

This entry's kinda random...mainly to answer some questions in messages I've received. First, the rrrrr thing. Timmy, here's the trick (or so I'm told)..... Stick a pencil or pen under your tongue and practice saying words with "rr's" in them. It will force your tongue to touch the top of your mouth....not so much the back of your teeth. My major problem is that I'm forming all my words by putting my tongue to the teeth. Not good! So all you have to do is suck up your pride, put a pencil and your tongue, and start saying a ton of [View Full Entry]

Now if you asked me how to roll all the rrr's in that title, I would NOT be able to do it. That is the theme of the day.... I've felt pretty frustrated all day. As I've always joked before, my Spanish accent is horrible. However, it's really been brought to my attention today. Seems I missed out on a few pieces of advice that really would've helped me years ago... For instance, if I want to make the "r" sound, I actually need to make a "d" sound. Hmph....didn't know that. I suppose I should've, but I was never told [View Full Entry]
