Today, Julia woke up with a big smile on her face and said, “Horse Day!” They were so excited to meet their horses that they would be riding for the day. We drove to Alpine, Wyoming to meet our guide at Jackson Hole Outfitters. Our guide, Cole, introduced us to our three horses - Andrea, Star and Twist. Julia rode in a buddy saddle behind Tony. The entire ride was an experience that I don’t think any of us will ever forget. For ten miles, the five of us were the only people on the trail riding up the side of [View Full Entry]

Giddy Up!
On the way up.

Howdy from Granite Hot Springs, Wyoming. We’re wrapping up another great day outside of Jackson Hole near Hoback Junction. This morning, we went on a scenic, white water rafting trip down the Snake River with the Teton Expeditions. Initially, I thought that the river might be a little rough for the girls, but when I saw little, old ladies getting on the raft with oxygen tanks - I knew that we were in for a calm ride down the river. Our guide, Dave, did all of the paddling from the back and the raft and we were in charge of relaxing [View Full Entry]

The Girls rowed for the group!
What a view!

Last night, we spent the night at Gros Ventre campsight which is near the Grand Tetons and just north of Jackson. After dinner, we went for a little hike at dusk and saw a large, female moose about 100 yards in front of us. We used the binoculars to watch it for a while - incredible! Afterwards, Tony and Julia hunted for fire wood and made our first rip roarin' fire. We wanted to make S'mores, but we didn't have any chocolate. Tony came up with the idea to subsititute chocolate pudding instead. It tasted great! This morning, we drove into [View Full Entry]

Julia drives to the Grand Tetons

Greetings from Yellowstone National Park! We left Cody, Wyoming this morning after a wonderful visit and started heading further west. We drove over the Absorka Mountain Range on the Chief Joseph Scenic Highway. We were able to cross over into Montana by driving through a little town called Cooke City. We had about a two hour drive to the north east entrance to Yellowstone National Park. Once we entered the park, we began looking for big game. It was always exciting to see a group of cars pulled over on the side of the road because you knew that they were [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Cody, Wyoming! We’ve made a quick stop at one of Tony’s friends named Ken, nestled into the Bear Tooth Mountains. To the west is Yellowstone National Park and to the southwest are the Teton Mountains. The Tetons are only 100 miles away, but it would take you 6 hours to drive there. Many animals inhabit the area, including bobcats, gold eagles, rattle snakes, bull snakes, scorpions, mule deer, mountain lion, elk, mountain goats and horny toad lizards. We arrived here yesterday around 5:30 P.M. after six hours of traveling. We had to travel over the Big Horn Mountain [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Devil's Tower. We made it here about 5:00 last night and got a quick hike in around the base of the tower. It is amazing! We camped in site of the tower last night next to another family in a VW camper. They're driving from Oregon to Cape Cod and then back - we thought we had a long drive! We have another 350 miles in the van this morning to our friends' home in Powell, WY. Hope to see a dinosaur attraction on the way. See you later. [View Full Entry]

Evening photo of the tower

Well, the Dunns have been busy travelers since our last blog. We drove fourteen hours yesterday which was approximately 842 miles. Our entire travel distance thus far has totaled 1,291.8 miles. Our average driving speed has been 61.2 miles per hour. (Tony is giving me these stats off of Garmin while he drives. You all know - he’s the numbers guy.) The girls were incredible travelers all day yesterday despite the grueling travel conditions. Overall, it was a great day to drive cross country, but the weather posed some challenges. The wind was pretty mighty at times. I told the girls [View Full Entry]

Other Country Girl!
Somewhere over the rainbow
Dunns do Mt. Rushmore!

The Dunns are officially on the road. We left home yesterday at 3 PM and drove until 10. We were able to drive 400 miles. The girls have been great so far! Maddie has spent most of her time reading and making travel bingo for the family. Julia has been doing what she does best - snacking! The heat was a little tough on us ( just me) for a while, but then it cooled down. Our final destination last night was a campground on the Illinois/Iowa border called Lundeen’s Landing. The only problem was that it was completely flooded. We [View Full Entry]

Lots of water

Well, the Dunns are almost ready to hit the road! We've spent the past week packing and adding things to our growing "to-do" list. Tony and I have two different packing philosophies: Tony's is- minimalist packing is best. Mine is- pack everything including the kitchen sink!! We're doing pretty well to find a happy medium! We'll post our next travel blog after we've seen Mt. Rushmore. See you then!! [View Full Entry]

Rushmore, Deadwood City, Devil's Tower, Yellowstone, Jackson and San Francisco. We are really looking forward to riding horses, white water rafting and riding on a Conastoga wagon.
