After to graduating from Landmark College in May of 2007 I transfered to Menlo College in California to pursue the idea of studying Psychology and a relationship. Things I learned from that semester... 1) Lies are more present than I had imagined, whether they are articulated by some of the people you trust the most or even someone you only encounter once in your lifetime. ... read more
Hey! Right now I am writing from the train! We just left Edinburgh Scotland and we are on our way down to Dover to see the white cliffs. We will only be staying one night in Dover until we leave for our last stop in London! Right now I am getting free wireless, but it is only a trial so it may not last very long, so I will try and keep this short. So far we have been to Bath, Cardiff Wales, Oxford, Whitby and Edinburgh. So far my two favorite places have been Whitby and the Highlands in Scotland. They are both beautiful places in which I wouldn't mind living at all. One of the coolest things about the Highlands is that they have Highland Coos', which are large cow with long brown hair ... read more
Deep Scottish Love Wednesday, July 12th - Sunday, July 16th I have to admit I wasn’t in love with Edinburgh at first sight. My study abroad group and I got to Edinburgh Station around mid-afternoon and quickly walked through town to locate the place all the students would be staying, on Cowgate Road at Budget Backpackers, for the next four nights. The two other girls and I took our baggage up to our brightly painted room, made the beds and discussed who would share the double mattress, on the bottom bunk. Without argument we finalized the sleeping arrangements and I grabbed my backpack and I rushed off to the Starbucks I had noticed on the Royal Mile, across from the white and black cow, designed to look like he had the lay out of a globe ... read more
The Heart of All that is Good and Simple Friday, July 9th - Wednesday, July 12th Coming from Vermont, the rolling hills along the side of the train tracks were not a new site to me, but the differences between the two is that in Vermont the hills are covered with trees and in Britain the hills are covered with crops. Lucy was explaining out next homework assignment to a small group of us when she stopped mid-sentence to announce “there’s Whitby”. I swiftly turned around in my seat to face a tall bridge standing right outside the window. The bridge must have been close to two hundred feet off the ground and straddled the harbor that ran parallel to the tracks. The train started to slow down as it pulled into the station; we had ... read more
A Woman's Dream in Oxford -- Shopping and Dessert Friday, July 7th - Sunday, July 9th Oxford is the best place for a student, who has issues with money, to go shopping. In almost any store or café that you walk into you can receive a student discount, up to ten percent, provided you show your student identification card at the time of purchase. That was enough of an invitation for me to spend my day off going shopping, even though I am notorious for being one of the few females on the planet who loathes shopping. Despite my extreme hatred I knew I had to get an Oxford sweatshirt before I left, so I set out onto the streets in search for yet another piece of clothing to stuff into my backpack and carry around ... read more
Well I am here in Cardiff, Wales and today has been the coolest day since we arrived here at the UK. Today has been in the 80's, while the rest of the week it has been in the high 90's. I have to admit I miss Ireland's weather!! We started off our trip in Bath and now we are in Wales. On Friday we leave for Oxford and will be there for two days before moving on to our next location again. We are doing a lot of writing (hense the Travel Writing course) and I think most of us are getting pretty worn down from the heat and travel, but we are hanging in there. So far most of our day trips have gone not so smoothly. Our first trip on Monday to Stonehenge and ... read more
Experiencing Cardiff from Colum Road Tuesday, July 4th - Friday, July 7th Beads of sweat continue to roll down the sides of my round face, I wipe them away with my hand and then onto my jeans. One of the reasons why I came to the United Kingdom for the summer was to escape the heat that is all too common for Chicago, but my group and I have found ourselves in the middle of biggest heat wave that Wales has had in the past three years. After asking for directions twice and walking for a good half hour we finally toppled into the B&B we were scheduled to stay at for the next three nights. Once us girls managed to unload our luggage into our three bed, one bath, one table and one wardrobe bedroom ... read more
Bathing from Behind the Curtin Saturday, July 1st -- Tuesday, July 4th As a new traveler from the large modernized city of Chicago, Bath has provided a beautiful step back into history. Just as Sager claimed in his piece about Bath, the antique looking architecture is everywhere through out the town. There isn’t a street you can go down without seeing at least one building that dates back a good hundred years. The Royal Crescent, alone, is a 605 foot long Georgian monument with 114 pillars that dates back to 1767 and provides a wonderful view of Bath. Unfortunately to own a whole house in the Royal Crescent it would cost a quarter of a million pounds; needless to say, only those who are wealthy can afford to live there. Who knew America wasn’t the only ... read more
