I am a "life long learner" with my day job as the Risk and Insurance Manager for an Energy Company in Des Moines, Iowa. When I'm not at work, I'm off traveling, near and far. I would like to share my travel adventures with my family, friends and anyone reading my travel blog. I hope to paint a vivid picture of what I'm seeing and doing during the March 2010 travel trip to Europe.

So where will we be headed this year? With Dr. C. Ken Meyer, Drake University, we will be on the run covering 9 cities in 19 days: Copenhagen, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Rothenburg, Geneva, Paris, Normandy, Dublin and landing in London.

My travel motto for 2010 in six words: New Friends, Exciting Vistas, Inspire Others!

As Led Zeppelin would say ...... It's been a long time since I rock and rolled, It's been a long time since I did the stroll ........... It's been a long time, Been a long time, Been a long lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely, lonely time ...Yes it has! I need to get back to bi-monthly blogging as I've seen and done a lot since March 2010... had the trip of my life this year in Europe, had 3 karaoke parties, went to the IA State fair 8 out of 11 days and saw 8 plus shows and paid more than a few dollars to see some great acts rolling through Iowa. But first, some EGG--citing news that I made a special video to explain my next adventure. Click on the link and then go to the ... read more

'Twas the night before Europe travel is here and I am so very ready for my "educational trip" aka vacation to begin. Let me give you a rundown of the activities in preparation for 19 days of travel. Since the Feb 24th Chit Chat and Swirl event, we had a great class on 3 March and then a small meet-up at The Raccoon River Brew Pub on 6 March. This too was a great way to get to know some of the travelers in a small setting. And boy, did we get to know each other...a great preview of great talks, jokes and seeing who can make me blush the most. At the meet-up, I unveiled my travel buddy Anderson Copper aka "AC 360" on a stick. My best bud Judy B. made this for me ... read more

Greetings everyone! Can it be March already? I say yes because I'm getting ready for my annual DrakeSmart trip to Europe and I'm ready for the big "countdown" to: Copenhagen, Hamburg, Heidelberg, Stuttgart, Rothenburg, Geneva, Paris, Normandy, Dublin and London. We do all this in 19 days. I'll preface this trip blog by saying "this is no vacation" in the sense that it's not a leisure trip rather an educational study trip of public policy and people. So why do I spend 12 days of hard earned vacation with 50 travelers on a motorcoach? Simply put, I love Europe and group travel is very interesting way to travel and network. So here I am again, assisting Dr. C. Ken Meyer in the Comparative Management Public Policy Course "Children and our Future". This year, I stepped it ... read more

While the globe is celebrating the 20th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall and Sesame Street’s 40th birthday, I will be paying tribute to the millions of men and women who have served/serving in the United States Armed Forces on Veterans Day, November 11, 2009. I shared this summer of how I ended up in America. What’s more interesting is that four of five of my siblings served in the US Armed Forces, 1975 to 1990. I would love to say it was out of our patriotic duty for America welcoming us to this land of opportunity, but it was the means for a college education. I am proud to say “I am living the American Dream” and I have to thank the US Armed Forces for this awesome opportunity. First, my brother Anthony ... read more

Check this off my bucket list: going home to Wheaton, Maryland. One of our local radio personalities, Van Harden, shared how he visited his elementary and high school a couple of years ago. So on my last trip to Washington DC, I did just that. A little back story might help. We came to the US from Trinidad in 1968. We settled in Wheaton, MD. I started school in third grade, skipped the 11th grade, graduated in 1977 and then joined the USAF in 1978. I lived in Idaho and since 1980, call Iowa my home. Let’s start with the family house at 12017 Centerhill Street; I think we called this a split house back in 1968. Today they would call it a Townhome. I haven’t seen this house since 1981, so it was nice to ... read more

TGAIO - Thank Goodness August is Over! August has been a busy travel month. It started with Caribana Festival/Parade in Toronto Canada , then the Iowa State Fair, WW II Honor Flights and ending the month with the American Idol concert in Kansas City. More later on the State Fair and Honor Flights. Some background, I must confess that I’m a TV junkie with news and reality competing for my attention and at times, my reality shows overshadows my love for politics and the daily scandal/murder and so forth. This occurs in the winter when American Idol (AI) captures my attention, January to May. I’ve been watching the show religiously since season two and in the last two years, AI stepped up the show by allowing the talent to play instruments. I believe this is why ... read more

Today it’s all about family, traditions and witnessing the largest Caribbean festival in North America. It’s called Caribana and it’s a three week festival held every July celebrating Caribbean culture. It ends with a humongous, a million plus, masqueraders dancing down Lakeshore Blvd. Read more about the history of Cariabana here: . Some background about me will be helpful. I was born on the island of Trinidad and Tobago. My parents; East Indian (from India), Chinese (China) and Spanish (Venezuela). You can call us Trinidadians, Caribs , or Coolies . To the non-natives, these terms might be offensive, but this is part of our culture. No issue for me. I’m proud to be a Coolie or a Carib! So how did we get here? We migrated, legally of ... read more

Closing out July 2009 by road tripping with my “sweet ride” to Toronto, Canada with Dad to see my Trinidad family, experience Caribana 2009 and see a bit of London and Toronto. Let me break down my trip: 15 hours or 840 miles from Ankeny to Toronto (13 hours of actual driving) 3 hours will be saved by driving to Davenport and working there on Wednesday 2 hours will be saved with an overnight stop to London (just to say I drove to London) 1 hour will be lost as I move to Eastern time Traveling with me is my Dad, my Garmin, and an assortment of audiobooks (A Bold Fresh Piece of Humanity by Bill O’Reilly to name a few). I left at 2pm and had 9 hours or 560 miles to drive. With only ... read more

This weekend was all about “fun” and letting my hair down with my friends Judy, Molly and their extended friends. I had no set agenda other than taking my sweet ride on her maiden voyage and having some fun. So here goes with the cast of characters for the weekend: Judy and Greg (Des Moines) I’ve known them since 2005 (Drake trip to Europe) Molly (Louisburg) Longtime friend of Judy who lives on farm with Jeff and 101 plus exotic animals Kelley (Des Moines) Longtime friend of Molly and Judy Teresa (Kansas City) College friend of Judy Annette (Lincoln) High school friend of Molly First, a little about my “sweet ride”. After eleven years of driving the shopping mobile minivan, I was ready for a change. After three months of looking, I found this sweet ride ... read more
