More Fun in Great Exuma We are still in GeorgeTown, Exuma enjoying the warm weather and all of the social activities planned by the cruising community here. Nancy’s sister Gayle decided that she had endured enough ice & snow in Baltimore and put together a trip to George Town during the last week in January. As soon she told us she wanted to visit, Cameron began ordering boat equipment that we decided we needed to improve the cruising experience. These included lights for the dinghy, a solar shower for days when we did not need to run the engine and a [View Full Entry]

January Update from George Town We are still in Georgetown, Exuma waiting for boat parts to repair a couple of critical systems on the boat, like the starboard sail drive and the diesel generator. If we have to be stuck somewhere this is a pretty good place to be stuck. We have participated in many of the planned activities that the cruising community puts together here. There are volleyball games every day, as well as yoga lessons, and basket weaving classes. People play bridge, or take classes in things like ham radio or swimming. In the evening there are organized Texas [View Full Entry]

New Years Greetings from George Town On Saturday afternoon Dec. 22nd, Cameron took the dinghy across the harbor to the town to pick up Julie and Dan. Their flight arrived on time- unfortunately Delta decided to keep their luggage in Atlanta until the next day. They made a quick trip to the Exuma Market to purchase a couple of $5.00 toothbrushes - “Welcome to the Bahamas!” Since there was no unpacking to be done , we headed off to the beach. The breathtaking beauty of the scenery, the perfect weather, and drinks at the “Chat & Chill” beach bar helped our [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Warderick Wells Bahamas Land & Sea Park Today we sailed from Normans’s Cay to Warderick Wells Cay. It was a 21 mile trip with plenty navigational challenges like dodging coral heads and reading the water by the color of green or blue which tells us how deep the water is up ahead. Generally, dark blue is good and light blue or light green means shallow water. It seems we can see the bottom virtually all of the time so the water always looks shallow, even when it is 10-15’ feet deep. Norman’s Cay is known because it served as [View Full Entry]

Greetings from Nassau Today we were still hanging out in Marathon waiting for the right winds to take us on our journey. Cameron dinghied in and went to the Hurricane Lounge to watch the Texans on Sunday afternoon football. Around 5:30 we heard a strange trumpeting noise outside. It was coming from the boat next to ours. Sandy was standing on the bow of her boat blowing into a large conch shell. She was toasting the sunset with music and libation (a local custom called sundowners). In the course of having some work done on our engine we discovered that we [View Full Entry]

November 26, 2007 After an extended stay in Key West we are now having an extended stay in Marathon (also part of the Florida Keys). Our delays are partly due to the prevailing winds and partly due to some needed repairs. Sailors have a lot of sayings and one is that the definition of cruising is "repairing your boat in exotic locations". We are proof of that. Our friends Tony and Karen Townsend joined us in Key West on the 14th of November. We had fun exploring Key West with them. Tony and Cameron checked out the other boats while Karen [View Full Entry]

THankgiving at Marathon City Marina

We are having an extended stay in Key West and the weather has been great - upper 70's and lower 80's. We started out at the Key West Bight City Marina. It turned out that most of the race boats entered in the Key West World Championship Races were also staying at this marina. What a colorful group! They are the Nascar of the boating world. The boats are brightly painted, fast, and loud. They also come with flashy girls - literally. The boat across the dock from us was from Texas. The two girls on board wore cowboy hats, bikinis [View Full Entry]

Crew of a Texas Boat

The "Big Day" has finally arrived. The crew is made up of Cameron, fellow KP '72 grad Bob Schmidt and his son Jason, and Chris Parrish another Kings Pointer and veteran multihull sailor from Houston. Nancy decides that "Nothing goes to windward like a 737" and flies to Baltimore to visit her Mother & sister Gayle & family, while we bash our way to Key West. We shove off about 0900 and head out with strong NW wind. As we are about to round Red Fish Island, Cameron decides to go on the internet and check the weather forercast one last [View Full Entry]
