Just a quick update to share cute piccies with ya'll! The babies are all happy to be home and are enjoying eachother's company. We've fattened Copper back up, he's going to really miss all the extras he's been getting with his dinners! Boofy had really enjoyed the window view he got at his bunny-sitter's, which finally convinced him that the top level of his condo is fun too! So I rearranged my room so that he can look out the window here too, so I am excited he is finally going up there and making use of the space. And now everytime we go outside he's in the window looking out like a little guard bunny, haha. Copper unfortunately has come down with some kind of infection and had to pay a visit to the vet's ... read more
On our last Monday we took an assortment of trains and undergrounds to get to the Tower of London. Us being dumb yanks, we thought it was just a tower. (Well at least Doug and I did, haha) Apparently, it is an entire castle! They have these dudes called "Beefeaters" that were originally body guards/caretakers for the prisoners/guards of the crown jewels but are now essentially tour guides. Although we did notice they did their bit to keep people in check and discipline naughty children. When people in our tour group were chatting too loud "our" beefeater yelled at them to shut up. Very loudly! Reminded me of U.S. drill sergeants. A little kid got yelled at for climbing a pole; "Young man - get down!" And me and Erika got yelled at for hiding when ... read more
On Sunday my Mom, Hilary, & I did some shopping around Hemel. I was so excited to finally see an English petstore! I think it is a chain like our Petco/Petsmart but it is called Pets at Home. It was so amazing because they actually have a whole section of bunny stuff just like they do for dogs and cats! In the U.S. all they have is a few bits of crap for rabbits that are pretty much worthless. I have to order most of my bunny toys online or adapt cat toys. But in England they actually had tons of cool bunny stuff from bowls with carrots on them to bunny trees - like cat trees but with carrots hanging from the branches! Anyhow, I loaded up with as much packable stuff as I could ... read more
Thursday Doug and I slept in and then relaxed on Castle Beach until the tide came in. I collected lots of shells you wouldn't find on California beaches, and we did a little shopping for gifts to bring home. For dinner we went to a Thai restaurant that turned out to be pretty good. I wasn't sure if I would like Thai but it seemed a lot like Chinese food but spicier. Around 10pm we went out with my cousin Martin and his girlfriend Leah to check out the local pubs in Falmouth. We went to the Chain Locker next door to our flat and another that I don't remember the name of. On Friday it was Erika's 21st birthday, so we had a small dinner party in the flat with "take away" (what we call ... read more
It is so good to be home! We got to sleep in our own beds last night, shower with good water pressure, use taps (faucets) that mix the hot and cold for you, and eat Mexican food! Ahhh, the joys of California, haha. We had a great trip but it does make you appreciate home. Our flight home wasn't bad. Although we were about 40 minutes late on take off due to some dumb ass leaving "unattended baggage" on the plane and not claming it for ages despite repeated announcements by the captain. So they had to start security procedures and remove the baggage from the plane and start searching all the passengers a few rows in front and behind the left baggage. And then finally the dumby realized he'd left his bag in the isle. ... read more
On Tuesday we visited Trebah Gardens. It's a tropical garden that starts at the top of a hill and winds all the way down to a little beach at the bottom. We poked around all the little meandering paths through all kinds of plants - palms, bamboo, huge elephant ears, foxgloves, and ferns. Everything is so green compared to home where it is all brown and dead at the moment. So many wildflowers grow naturally here, like foxgloves. I had to plant them in my garden, I wish they grew naturally like that! In the evening we went out to dinner with Hilary's friend Lis who lives in Falmouth and her boyfriend John and son Luke.... read more
Today we visited Lands End, the most South Western Point of England. I have no photos to show for it except a shot of the building as we left the car park. I forgot my camera in the car, but it wasn't terribly exciting anyway, just some shops and a view of the rocky coastline. And we got stuck in traffic for an hour to see it! We ate some nasty food at a pub afterwards. We ordered "jacket potatoes" which is what they call baked potatoes, and we got these dark brown things that tasted like they'd been cooked two weeks ago and reheated. And the "salad" was nothing like any salad I'd ever seen before - it was mostly peppers with corn all over it and watercress on the top! Ew. So me and ... read more
I am so behind on these entries! It is hard to get unscheduled time to sit on the computer here. Plus with the lousy connection, it doesn't work at night, it doesn't work in the bedroom, and it doesn't work if Erika's on her computer, so that means I can only work on here in the morning, by the window, if Erika is still asleep. I miss my internet connection at home! I also miss the water pressure at home, here you get a trickle barely enough to wash the soap out of your hair. Anyhow... Sunday we walked from the flat up to Pendennis Castle. It was absolutely beautiful, set on the headlands surrounded by water and beaches. It was like a maze with lots of little spiral staircases going up and down everywhere, I'm ... read more
Saturday we moved from Gweek down to our rented flat on the harbor in Falmouth. The views are beautiful, providing you don't look straight down into the water. I have never seen so much trash and muck - ew! lol But other than that it is nice. We were here just in time for the Sea Shanty festival so there was singing all weekend over at the Chain Locker pub right behind us, and loads of people in period sailor and pirate type costumes. It was pretty neat! I got a video of it which I would love to upload, if I can. We've been having a terrible time with this internet service, it is soooo slow and likes to kick you off if more than one person are on it. I've been having to make ... read more
Today was my 28th birthday! (And Finn's 5th - happy b-day Finn!) Doug surprised me with a gorgeous diamond necklace and I had a lot of cards sent to Gweek as well which was very nice. In the morning we had a beautiful walk up to Dollar Cove and Church Cove, where we had a look in a very old church in the sand, where the sailors used to pray before going out to sea. They still have services there on Sundays, and it looked like someone had recently had a wedding judging by the decor. The was a little graveyard outside that had this spooky angel headstone with snails in it's eyeballs! And then my Dad knelt in some stinging nettles by accident so we got to try out the old remedy of spitting on ... read more
